The simplest explanation is that it *is* a prototype of the new iPhone, and that it *was* accidentally left in a bar.

I agree. Think of how difficult it would be to pull off this kind of counterfiet. The person would have to have somehow gotten access to an advanced protype design casing, design buttons and custom chips and batteries for the inside of the device. There are easier ways to fool folks on the internet. It takes about as much skill as manipulating a photograph in photoshop.

The iPhone doesn't need to have the best and latest/greatest technology. It needs to just be "good enough" because the OS and app store will cinch the deal. And why on earth would I want an 8 MP camera on my phone? If I want to take high quality photos to print and frame, I will use my SLR. Do you know how long it takes to send an 8 MP photo via email or MMS? For the purpose of sending snaps to friends through your phone, 1 MP is more than enough.

Well why are people buying phones with 8MP cameras? Storage is getting bigger, data connections are getting faster...technology moves on.
Some are looking for a device that can do everything well, the current iPhone comes close. Also I think it is important for Apple to keep innovating in areas other than design and marketing.

The micro-SIM card is identical to the mini-SIM card minus some plastic (1 cm length, 3 mm width). The card thickness is the same. There is no additional functionality gains, just some space savings.

The current iPhone has a mini-SIM slot, just like typical GSM phones.

The most typical reason to swap SIMs is to use different carriers (e.g., traveling abroad).

Carrier locking is based on the market. There are some places where carrier locking is illegal (I believe Belgium is one example). Current and previous iPhones in the United States have all been locked to AT&T, the exclusive carrier.

Thanks. Greatly Appreciated.

Do you see it as a possibility for Apple to release iPhones unlocked to people who desire it this way?

The larger lens is all that matters. This isn't a Canon. I'm agreeing with you btw.

The square design with rounded corners and the rounded buttons look very Nokia-ish to me. I'm thinking this is a knock off.

Larry,

Do you remember that time at your house when I said that there would come a day when I would let you dress up in all your samurai gear and lop someone's head off in my office?

That day is today.

Have a tatami mat here, but we need one of those rice paper screens for the authentic touch. Can you bring one? I'd like it if you use that 16th century sword with the purple handle wrap.

See you at 1 Infinite around 3? You can land in the parking lot behind Building 4.

I was thinking more along the lines of the Fight Club scene in the police station.

Somehow this won't really sink in until it hits the major news networks, then we are going to get a lot more of the story.

...am I the only one who think this might be the Zune Phone?

It's using very similar lines, and even has the little screws on the bottom, like the ZuneHD has on the back.

I think the Apple logo, Apple branded parts, the recover with itunes logo, the articles claiming it's the next-gen iPhone, and the big iPhone logo on the back of the device all point in the direction of yes. Yes you are the only one to think that is the Zune phone.

I wonder if they are going to sell ticket seats for the public execution of the martyred brave soul who left this by his beer? Stoning by iPhone? Will Steve wear a black hood to match his turtleneck? Or will he make Jonathan do the dirty work whilst he watches? I'll bet attendance for all employees will be mandatory at this execution just to make 'em see what happens when you forget a billion dollar product in the peanut dish. Forget the hearse let alone the ambulance, I'll bet this guys/gals? gunna fry big time. Poor dude/dudette, Steve's sharpening his execution sword about now. We luv ya Apple, bring on the lions, dominos sancto...hmmmemmmm gregorian chant in background ......RIP!

Just imagine, that this phone was dropped in purpose by Apple, in order to check public opinion concerning new 4G phone. They will read all these opinions and will fix all things, that forum readers don't like.

Close. If this is real, and look like it might be, I imagine intentionally "lost" it so that the features would be leaked to stave off people buying the Nexus. It's too late in the process to make major changes to the feature set.

That said, nothing to say this case isn't a decoy itself, and that the actual phone may look different. Car makers do this all the time when they are road testing new models. Given Apple's paranoia putting a decoy inside a decoy somehow sounds about right.

I wonder if they are going to sell ticket seats for the public execution of the martyred brave soul who left this by his beer? !

You are assuming s/he left it unintentionally. But think about it, if you were testing an Apple product would you be so careless knowing you'd have to face the wrath of Steve -- something that has caused others to commit hari kari in the past?

Again, I reiterate that it depends on the market.

Apple has not made any attempt at providing unlocked phones to U.S. consumers probably because their exclusive agreement with AT&T stipulates that iPhones sold in the U.S. are carrier locked to AT&T. I have no insight into whether or not that will be changed.

As long as AT&T has exclusive rights to the iPhone, it is possible however improbable that unlocked phones would be available in the United States.

AT&T has let me upgrade EACH YEAR to the new phone as long as i re-upped my contract

Do you have to pay more due to the subsidized price? Verizon used to let me do the same, but I never had Smartphones on their service. A very large smile is starting to form on my face :)

I'm not sure what to think of it. The design is "OK" at best. But then again I hated the new Chevy Tahoe's design when they first came out and now I own one and love it.

If it is a knock off, it was well planned out and expensive to produce. If it isn't then Apple definitely compromised design for features.

Also, IF it is a knock off, Gizmodo is going to be swallowing some words come summer.

Still ugly, just today we have people loving what they hated yesterday. Nice features, but not a typical clean Apple design. I hope it is a prototype without the finalized design.

Look, Apple knew this was missing before anyone else even had it, they then had a choice, block all media pictures or let it out,

its obvious the choice they made.

Cool.

How nice would it be if Apple just went aluminium unibody with glass front BUT carve out the apple logo at the back and put all the radio connectivity stuff there!

As long as the battery life is good (with this thickness, it should be), it does multitasking, can be jailbroken and the volume has been improved, I'm fine with it. Although, I was almost certain that the screen would be larger.

I hope it's not going to be very heavy, but there are other phones out there with larger display... I don't think this is the next generation iPhone.

This is the cleanest apple design to date.... you may not like it but you can't argue its not clean, unless those seems have an extra purpose they will undoubtedly not be on the production model

You WIN! Flawless Victory!

Okay okay its alright now we love it and I will buy it.
But the number one question is: will it blend?

If it's not on Verizon I'm not buying it.

I'm so fed up with AT&T and the lack of 3G where I live that if the next iPhone doesn't come out in a Verizon flavor I won't be buying it. If it does, it's a no-brainer for me, but if not, Android here I come.
