Can I see the research of this alleged "60%"?

I know, I know people are so used to statistic thant I better put it up 6 on 10 person didn't like the design.

How I know it ? I have the internet and I can count.

This... is... a... PROTOTYPE. And you need to realize that Jonathan Ive has a LOT to do with Apple design.

Yeah, I realize that, but rarely if ever does any designer have a final say on anything they create - whether it's Ive and an iPod or Gehry and the Brooklyn Nets Stadium. The developer makes the decisions based on various external pressures.

However, I will conceded that the pictures posted by LaguanSol have swayed my argument that this is a little more considered that it first appeared.

'Exactly'... Really?

samsung_t509_2.jpg

Your definition of the word 'exactly' appears to be dramatically opposed to that of every other rational individual on earth.
Oh come on... all you need to do is invert the color scheme, disregard the keypad, think wider, squint really hard and maybe drink a keg of beer, and they're exactly the same.

Apple would not go to the trouble to create fake advertising like this. I think the odds of them doing something like that are LESS than this being a real iPhone prototype.

But Apple makes it easy for us.
They print the word "Prototype" in large friendly words on the cover.

This is a production sample. They are ready to roll with this.
I am guessing this will see the light of day really soon.

C.

You've seen a lot more Apple prototypes than anyone else here then - you should be writing articles not comments! I'm partly jesting...

Anyway, at the very least I'd say it's one of several production 'options'. Eggs and baskets.

I quite like it anyway. Never did like the cheapy feel of the 3G & 3GS (preferred the solid 1st gen...clumsy hands).

Deiter Rams says.....

• Good design is innovative.

• Good design makes a product useful.

• Good design is aesthetic.

• Good design helps us to understand a product.

• Good design is unobtrusive.

• Good design is honest.

• Good design is durable.

• Good design is consequent to the last detail.

• Good design is concerned with the environment.

• Good design is as little design as possible.

In that case, what we are seeing is good design. They've knocked it out of the park.

And don't care about the ******** you've just been served, about 60% of people (who're aware of this prototype and therefor geeks) don't like the design.

Which is a big deal for a company like Apple and a product like the iPhone. That's the same reason the iPad will fail, once the whole propaganda has gone

iPad and iPhone fail because of their design? That's the most absurd thing I've heard since someone told me an Apple engineer lost a prototype iPhone in a bar.

Seriously, you think, if this IS the new iPhone, that people aren't going to buy it because of its design? That's ridiculous.

iphone 4g

Since gizmodo has the iphone why dont they tear it apart and tell us the specs on the processor and everything else.... also how can apple remotely disable a device. Shouldnt gizmodo be able to find out who the sim belongs to and activate it in one way or another? its all fishy i bet apple released it to begin the hype and i doubt this is the final model...I bet theyll take out the seams and make it look more like the ipad and the macbook pro and mac casings.

Actually... doesn't Apple always uses a red circuit board on prototypes?

BTW a quick note if this was the real deal would Apple not have asked MacRumours to pull the article? something to consider.

Gizmodo wrote the article. MacRumors just pointed at it.

And who would stop such an article for Apple, anyway? It's not like Apple has a history of giving anything in return for such demands.

Reason I think it's real. Geometry.

Apple is always playing with how their products are designed (see iPod Nano) and so far they've usually cited space requirements (Geometry) as a driving force in design decisions.

For a device that is very space limited internally, having an almost rectangular design is best in terms of being able to use internal space. Think about it. Batteries are rectangles and chips are rectangles. These shapes fit best when together in something that is essentially a larger rectangle.

I've always wondered why they made the 3G and 3GS so rounded, it seemed like wasted space. This is more apparent in the iPad design. The rounded edges on the back of the iPad (when looking at the tear downs) are essentially void of anything. All the parts are in the middle where it is more rectangular.

I wish I knew what the atmosphere at Apple was like right now.
I think you're all overdramatizing the smatter of dropped jaws in Cupertino. This is, what, the billionth leak in the last five years. I think the mood at Apple boils down to "oops, they did it again" -- no yelling, no crisis meetings, no sharpening of castration contraptions, just a mild feeling of annoyance but they're all too bogged down with work to dwell on it.

Lost iPhone bound to happen....

...Apple, like every other cell phone provide, needs to test pre-production models many, many months before a rollout. I'm sure these have been tested since the 1st of the year. With hundreds of testers, this was bound to happen.

i don't like those random cuts..

but still, this is a prototype.. the finished product may look totally different!

I LOVE the new design

It looks like a monolith from 2001 Space Odyssey.

I love it's thin, exact square, flat, minimalistic, industrial design look. Never liked iPhone's curved design.

All that said though, the seams have to go...

It looks to me like there is plenty of room (and a gap for it) to add the chrome ring around the phone that's been there on every version of the iPhone to date.
