I love my iPhone X...BUT! I am constantly being told that I fade in and out during phone calls. I have a strong signal and Apple Tech's have checked the phone twice. They say, I may be talking too softy. Sorry, there is something wrong!

This happens to me on my iPhone X. The person I’m talking to won’t be on speaker, but the speaker button looks as if it is on.

Seems like you missed the whole point there--it's not about different models, it's about the issue being apparently sporadic in that it only affects some devices of a particular model while vast majority of them don't experience it. You can have a hundred iPhone 7 devices for example, and none of them would experience the issue, depending on how sporadic and prevalent the issue might be.

Something similar just happened to one of my apps recently. Less than 1% of the users were effected by the bug, and I still haven't found the reason. The release passed our QA tests with multiple devices and user accounts.
Sometimes, even with a good QA, software is released with bugs.
The difference between my company and Apple is they sells millions of devices so even a small percentage of users means hundreds or thousands of devices affected.

I will never update my apple devices again.
Since they removed the ability to control music from the apple watch with watch os 4.1 i unsubscribed from apple music and subscribed on spotify which i now find a much better service.I have to thank apple for that.
I will wait for the spotify app on apple watch.
iPhone 7 plus iOS 11.1,
Apple watch series 1 watch os 4.1,
iPad air 2 iOS 10.01,
Mac book pro 2017 ntb macOS Sierra 10.12.6

No way Apple would charge for a repair for this. If they did, as word spread, folks would hesitate to upgrade to newer revisions of iOS. This would be bad for bragging rights of how fast folks update, as well as for performance, security and services compatibility.

Has anyone tested the 11.4 beta on the iPhone 7 / 7 Plus and see if it fixes this issue?

My mic issue with my now replaced 7 Plus began with the public beta (through Apple's beta site, not a 3rd party download) of iOS 11.4. The first thing I did was wipe it and install whichever the latest production version was at the time (this was 6 weeks ago now), but the issue was still there. The bottom mic didn't work for FaceTime, voice calls, or voice memos but I was able to do Hey Siri, voice to text, video recording with sound.
My work paid the $350 to replace my phone last Thursday, and then I saw this on Friday, so I can't test by going back to an older iOS version, unfortunately. Funny thing was the Apple Store ran the diagnostics again last Thursday (May 3rd) and said it's the mic issue, not a software issue. So I guess this issue isn't known to all Geniuses.

I sold a 7 plus on Swappa and the buyer returned it last week because of mic issues. I tested it and got the same issues on calls and on facetime . I brought it to the Apple store and it passed the diagnostics but I insisted it be repaired.

I had an issue with the bluetooth on my 8+ and it passed their diagnostics but I made them give me a new device since I only purchased new in Jan. Zero bluetooth issues with the new model.

Personally I don't think their diagnostics tool works that well and I am tired of arguing with the staff that there is an issue because they take the results of that test as gospel.

My iphone 7 plus 128 GB cannot be used for calls because of this update to 11.3. I can talk if I transfer calls to my Ipad or use bluetooth in my car. The mics are gone, it will not even record a voice memo, the record button is grayed out not letting it even start recording. I'm 40 miles from Apple store but have an appointment tomorrow at 5. It will not let you restore Iphone to anything other than 11.3 so it doesn't help to restore from back-up either.

My daughter's iPhone 7 was afflicted. Upgraded to 11.3 and it killed the receiver and mic. Made an appt at the nearest Apple store a couple of hours away. There are authorized service centers closer but I figure Apple is more likely to fix it without cost and with less argument.

I think people are diagnosing this incorrectly; those symptoms are occurring because the phone thinks headphones are plugged in when not.

Regardless, Apple replaced mine out of warranty which is sweet since I bought it used.

The bad news, is that Apple replaced your phone with a refurbished one and maybe will give you different issues... also Apple limits its replaced phones with a 3 months warranty.

1. There is nothing wrong with Apple's refurbished items; I have bought many, from iPads to MacBook Pros, and they are always great. While it's true that the refurb might have some unknown problem, this issue has shown that a new phone isn't guaranteed to be issue free.
2. The replacement phone has a brand new battery, as opposed to one which is at least a year old, and a brand new back case.
3. I bought my phone used, with a scuffed back and so so battery, so the replacement one is now better.
4. My phone was already out of warranty, so a 90 day warranty is an improvement.

Any other negatives you can think of?

Well, maybe i had been out of luck since my replacement phone showed corrosion inside of it.

In a scenario like that, there are still options to use speakerphone, for example, rather than having the option grayed out or just not functional.

My 7+ is on 11.1.2. I would update but I don't want to deal with Apples power management garbage. And then there's this mic issue that could occur if I update.

The power management part can be managed by the user as of iOS 11.3.

I had this issue. Apple replaced with a brand new unit. But I am also still experiencing speaker issues with my AirPods. Is anybody else experiencing issues with their AirPods too? Sounds is fine, but I’m unable to speak on phone calls or use Siri.

I'm aware and that is the part that I don't want any part of. Right now, my 7+ on iOS 11.1.2 will not shut off if it encounters a huge battery draw situation. If I upgrade it, it will have that feature which of course can be "disabled" but I don't want any of that on my phone.

This happened on my 8 and destroyed my phone. Catastrophic update.

Apple has acknowledged a microphone issue affecting a limited number of iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models running iOS 11.3 or later.

In an internal document distributed to Apple Authorized Service Providers this week, obtained by MacRumors, Apple said affected customers may experience a grayed-out speaker button during phone calls. The issue may also prevent affected customers from being heard during phone calls or FaceTime video chats.

Apple Authorized Service Providers have been instructed to first ask customers to disconnect or power off any Bluetooth headsets or other audio accessories connected to their iPhone to see if that alleviates the problem.

If the speaker button remains grayed out during a call, the service providers have been instructed to run audio diagnostics. Affected devices will display a "device could not detect dock" or "accessory not supported" alert in the diagnostic pane, in which case the service provider can initiate a repair for the iPhone.

If an affected iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus is no longer covered by warranty, Apple says its service providers can request an exception for this particular issue. Apple's document does not specify if the repairs will be completed free of charge, but it seems likely given the circumstances.

While this does not appear to be a widespread problem, there are have been some complaints about microphone issues on iOS 11.3 scattered across MacRumors, Reddit, Twitter, and the Apple Support Communities in recent months.

It's unclear why iOS 11.3 and subsequent software versions are unintentionally disabling microphones on some iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus units. Apple mentions that some of the devices may require a repair, suggesting the software update could somehow be causing a hardware defect, but information is lacking.

Affected customers can schedule an appointment with an Apple Authorized Service Provider or with the Genius Bar at an Apple Store via the Contact Apple Support page: iPhone -> Repairs & Physical Damage -> Unable to Hear Through Receiver or Speakers -> Built-in Speaker -> Bring In For Repair.

Apple has not confirmed this issue publicly, but MacRumors has verified the document's authenticity with a reliable source. However, outside of our control, some Apple employees may be unaware of or deny the information. In that event, we recommend escalating your case to a senior AppleCare advisor if possible.

MacRumors has reached out to Apple for clarity on this issue. If and when we hear back, we'll update this article.

Hhhmm, a software upgrade that makes it look like a hardware failure or actually causes a hardware failure, then some people in here, take it to Apple and they want $350 to repair. First the software update that limits CPU ability because of a so call bad battery and now this. What's next, software this disables the screen/video. Looks too much like force upgrade. I know it's probably not, but damn, get it together Apple.
