The most interesting thing to me about this ad is that it promotes 2 competing networks. I can't recall seeing an ad for another US phone that says "Available on X and Y networks." I think this is just another example of how Apple has managed to wrestle control from the carriers.

Your absolutely right; in the end that's more free advertising for the iPhone :D

CDMA 3G is slow. Facetime on it would be a disaster. I'll bet they considered it, but the quality would have to be turned down so far, that it would definitely not be worth it. AT&T could probably do it on their network though... If only...

Raw signal bars don't mean a whole lot when using a CDMA radio, such as with Verizon anything or AT&T 3G.

The reason is, raw signal bars simply tell you the reception from the tower, which is not as important with CDMA as how many users are talking to that tower.

With CDMA, all phones talk at once. More phones = higher noise floor, and most signal bars don't show that, because it fluctuates constantly.

The upshot is, you can have one bar and a great connection with fewer users on that cell. Conversely, you can have five bars and a slow connection because of hundreds of users on that cell.

What would happen with VW if they could implement data+voice at the same time as AT&T? Hmmmm ;)

Not defending AT&T, their service is horrendous in some areas and good in others. The general public isn't aware of what happened at the time of AT&T's take over of Cingular. Cingular had been leasing out their towers to t-Mobile to stave off bankruptcy (I believe almost 40%). Right before AT&T's takeover those leases were renewed, especially in southern California. AT&T then had to deal with developing more towers which requires years of research in which areas need towers, permits from cities to build new towers, and finally testing and building of those towers. A year later in 2007 came the huge success of the iPhone and millions of people hit AT&T hard. That is a lot to take on.

Granted they have had a few years to strengthen their network, yet it takes a few years per tower. Having lived in L.A., I know SoCal is AWFUL for AT&T. This is mostly due to Beverly Hills refusing AT&T and other companies to build towers in their area (they also refused the building of L.A.'s subway system through to reach Santa Monica as they don't want "those people" in their area, stifling much needed mass transit).

So it's not all AT&T's fault, however they definitely have dropped the ball on numerous occasions.

So when you switch to Verizon so you have better phone coverage out in San Francisco, if you redid your test, would the results of your non-photoshopped picture be any different? ;)

Not planning on switching. Verizons CS sucks plan and simply. I'm just critical of AT&T because they're not Doug enough to resolve te San Franisco/New York coverage gaps.

Ok, I like the ad but I call fowl on Facetime being in the ad.

AT&T does not allow Facetime on its network. It's total BS to show it in an ad that's about their network and to make it worse they show Facetime immediately before lowering the phone to show the AT&T logo behind the phone.

That's not cool at all. I pretty much consider that part of the ad a lie. I mean, how else are you supposed to interpret that other than to think AT&T has Facetime? They don't.

(And I'm only giving Verizon a pass here because they haven't announced yet if they'll allow Facetime. This will also apply to that half of the ad if they end up saying they don't support it.)
Feature pre-announcement. They will address it in the next rev of the software which all Verizon customers will get accustomed to doing by getting the new features with an update. Over the air.

Rocketman

ATT network. Verizon network. It don't matter. You ain't cool `less you have iPhone 4 (previous generations grandfathered in to status of "not complete douchebags.") We're Apple. We love everybody dropping dollars on our tech. :D

If Verizon does not allow face time over 3g you can guarantee within a week afterwards we will be seeing commercials from AT&T stating they are now allowing it...

The (unspoken) message here is not about promoting competing networks, it's an affirmation that the Apple ecosystem looks and works dependably the same on ANY network.

People buying/trying Androids have to be confused and non-plussed about all the different versions and "skins" (and worse) all simultaneously available and different performance (or non-performance) of different apps they encounter, so Apple's reassuring them there'll be "none of that" on the iPhone.

Basically, a most classic Apple message: "It just works" (whether on A or VZW.)

You really need a lot more fiber in your diet!

What is really funny, though, is when they can get other companies to copy the lack of features, like the Windows Phone 7 which doesn't include multitasking or cut and paste :)

Getting a company to copy you works especially well happens when it's part of the company's Vision Statement, Core Competency, and Business Plan.

Well hopefully that will change when either ATT loses enough subscriptions in the NY and CA area based on similar complaints as yours or LTE networks coming online will enhance the coverage. I hope the future bodes well for you and holds improvements to mitigate your complaint.

LOL - You know what? You just found the exact loophole their lawyers probably did.

I find it amusing that at&t considers those hotspots "part of their network," but you're right...they do think that!

Why shouldn't they? It is part of their network. The network is more than cell towers.
If you have a AT&T Smartphone data plan you get free access to the vast majority of them (not just the free ones like Starbucks). Takes a load off their cell network as well as customers saving on their data plan.

There is a problem with adding coverage in California, especially San Francisco. It takes about 3 years to get a new tower up in that area. It takes less than 3 months in most areas in Texas. There is so much red tape and government bureaucracy that makes it hard to add extra coverage.

AT&T done a very smart move with buying Qualcomm's FLO TV spectrum. This definitely will be used for their 4G LTE network. From what I've read about it, there will be better penetration in built up areas where buildings are a big problem with interference.

That was the public excuse that Steve Jobs brought up at the AntennaGate conference to help try to explain iPhone 4 reception problems.

But while the timeline for new towers might be valid, it's not really pertinent:

There's no need to add new towers in cities like San Francisco. Third parties already own towers at every prime location, and lease them out.
