I love how ABC, broadcast free, over the air, to my house, on public radio waves requires a CABLE SUBSCRIPTION to access.

Please add Plex, that's all I need. And Amazon. Plex and Amazon, that's all I need. And the NFL.

Amazon, Plex, and the NFL. And this ashtray. The ashtray and the paddle game and that's all I need... And this remote control.

Nice channels... I just hope they are more useful them some other one already their. Up to know I have been only using Netflix and occasionally rented movies through iTunes. But Apple quietly keeps on raising prices of their rentals so I am not sure if I will rent anymore. We have to see...

This is certainly an ABC requirement. Look at what is happening to companies like Aereo who are following the law to the letter, but distributing that content over the Internet. These companies aren't willing to give up control, even if they'll give you the content for free in the old-fashioned ways.

Apple customer service tells me these channels, including HBO, can be subscribed to via iTunes. My cable provider tells me that HBO must be ordered via a cable service and then HBO can be viewed on a different platform such as Apple TV. Confused on how to watch these channels that are on Apple TV.

Is there a list somewhere that that tells what channels on AppleTV that are free and the price of the non-free channels are?

I can't really see the point adding channels that you need to have an existing cable subscription for. Surely you would just watch it through your cable box instead?

I guess like many people I would like the ability to pay a monthly subscription for the channels I want without the need for a cable subscription. For example in the UK Sky have recently launched Sky Go Monthly Ticket which allows you to watch all their sports channels for £35/month without a cable/satellite subscription and no contract. Ok you can only watch it on your PC or Tablet over the internet and yes it's expensive but at least it's a step in the right direction.

Once 4G unlimited data contracts become more realistic I won't need a phone line or home broadband. I could use a mobile broadband dongle or use my iPhone as a wifi hotspot instead.

Except that Amazon is a direct competitor to Apple and I doubt both companies are interested in adding an Amazon Video app to the Apple TV. Having it on iOS is one thing but directly on the Apple TV is another (especially with Amazon soon launching an Apple TV-like device of their own).

That being said, I'd love an Amazon video app on the Apple TV but for now using AirPlay to send it from the iPad works great.

This argument has not been born out to be true in the past.

The very same argument was used to explain why Netflix was unavailable on the version 1 Apple TV. Yet Apple added Netflix.

The Amazon Instant Video app is available on iPad and iPhone and can Airplay content to the Apple TV. If Apple is opposed to allowing it's competitor to stream content on Apple TV, they are not doing a very good job at preventing it.

I want the NFL!

I too want the NFL. I'd be willing to pay, though I'm not sure how much as I watch almost all the game I want over the air.

I'm wondering if the restrictions on having a cable subscription relate to revenue stream with local stations. Are there ads?

This is why I've invested time in figuring out how to bring DVR functionality to my OTA-received/recorded broadcasts.

Currently using EyeTV with an HD Homerun tuner. Major network affiliates are freely recorded to my mac, exported into iTunes, and available to both my Apple TVs so I can watch them at my leisure and fast forward through the commercials. No monthly fee, and no legal ambiguity.

It's clear that Apple, not-for-lack-of-trying, has been unable to usher in the a la carte revolution to TV it had been envisioning, so they are compromising. They will give you access to all these streaming apps, with the caveat you must still have a cable subscription to view them. Might be useful for some people. Not for me. These new apps will all get hidden on my ATV.

They can easily watch ABC on TV or online BUT seems they won't be able to with Apple TV.

I understand this is probably an ABC thing and not something Apple dictated but it SUCKS! especially since ABC is an Over-The-Air network!
I agree that it sucks, but in your case, what is the problem? You are still getting ABC, and if your run it through DVR such as EyeTV or TiVO you'll be able to watch it commercial free, something you won't be able to do using the AppleTV.

Integrating channels is well beyond the scope of a mere "major UI rewrite". It requires agreements to normalize descriptions of content across channel suppliers, as well as API support by these same channel suppliers. Apple might be able to so some of the former themselves, imperfectly, through a major investment in AI; but the latter is absolutely required.

My Samsung SmartTV is already doing this - I think it is pulling the data from my FIOS tuner, but it has it's own build-in content menu/search/recommendations. (However, their UI and control is horrible, thats why I never use it)

Like someone else said. I would like to have a "My List" icon where I can add shortcuts to the shows I want to see from all of the other icons. Very much like Netflix but for all content.

Still not sure I see the attraction to PLEX. I mean, isn't it for your content on your network. Can you stream LIVE TV from say CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, CW etc. This is what I want. I can see pretty much all of the movies I want from what is already available on ATV.

It's great that they keep adding channels/apps to the Apple TV .... but now they are at the point where a major UI rewrite is required, it is getting to cluttered and the 'channels' are not integrated, but instead separate without e.g. common search interface for shows/movies/... etc

I completely agree with this. New content is very good, but the way they are adding them with new App type icons isn't a great way to get around into content and actually watch it.

Why do you need a cable subscription for ABC? It's free and ad supported on the iPad/iPhone app... which I think you can airplay to the appleTV. If anything they should open up all those Network Apps (ABC, CBS, FOX NOW, NBC, COMEDY CENTRAL) that Hulu plus currently charges you to watch with ads for free so Hulu can get off their lazy asses and actually produce more worthwhile programming.

How about a solution where I don't have to reauthenticate to Comcast for every single 'channel' separatly - horrible implementation...

Is Crackle worth the trouble of signing up or "registering"?

The Korean channel just streams nicely without bother (& looks interesting). I wish a Dutch/Belgian channel would be added, my mom would go nuts.

Until you can sign up explicitly within the 'apps' theres no point to adding these channels as you already need a cable subscription with your TV so you may as well watch them on that?!

Can you watch shows you missed or forgot to record on your TV? That's what this app is for.

Because I don't want to watch everything live and/or program my DVR for it .... I just go to HBO Go and browse through the movies available whenever I want.
Yes I could spend the time and program my DVR and hope I don't miss anything ... for me this is about convenience.

Yes, but what I think the difference is, is that Apple (through iTunes) and Amazon both sell new release movies for rental on a per movie basis, making it direct competition Apple and iTunes. Netflix does not sell new release movies like that, as they are more about paying a monthly subscription, and watching previous tv seasons and original programming, and only provides a fraction of the current movies choices that iTunes provides. So, from my viewpoint, I don't see them as direct competitors at all, which is why Apple probably felt it was safe to add them. I know I personally will compare iTunes with Amazon when I want to rent a movie, to see who has the cheapest rental price at the moment. I don't think Apple would want to encourage that if Amazon On Demand was on the Apple TV.

I would gladly pay a small subscription ($15/month) fee to see live programming on AppleTV live streamed. All I ever watch is USA, SyFy, AMC, Comedy Central and Travel Channel besides the standard Networks (NBC/CBS/ABC/FOX)

Why does "Watch ABC" require a cable TV or satellite subscription? ABC isn't a cable/satellite channel! Hell I can download the ABC app onto my iPad and watch it THERE, why not on the Apple TV?

This **** really makes no sense sometimes. These services even have ads, so you'd expect them to want to reach as many people as possible with minimal fuss.

never understood why we need a cable subscription in order to watch free OTA channels on Apple TV.

No wonder they are fighting Aereo.

Can you watch shows you missed or forgot to record on your TV? That's what this app is for.

Yes, its called Sky On Demand , Or Virgin on Demand, or BT etc. Most cable (or satellite) companies offer the service.
