For those with an AppleTV, and those who just got the update with the KORTV channel. Is there any subscription from a cable provider required for that, or is that free to watch? Does anyone know what Korean channel programming is broadcast on that KORTV channel? Is it programming from channels like Arirang or MBC, or is it it's own programming? My mother in law is Korean and looking for ways to watch Korean TV programs here in the US. Her satellite provider (Dish Network) previously had a korean channel, but they just dropped it. Wondering if this could be a viable replacement?

I too want the NFL. I'd be willing to pay, though I'm not sure how much as I watch almost all the game I want over the air.

I'm wondering if the restrictions on having a cable subscription relate to revenue stream with local stations. Are there ads?

abandon all hope for streaming sports without a cable subscription or antenna

baseball just signed a new deal. expect NBA and NFL to do the same.

Chances are, they never will.

Apple TV is majorly neglected in the UK. They need to work harder on getting at least the obvious stuff - BBC iPlayer/itv player/4OD.

Yup, the stupid thing is that it's free to actually put iPlayer and ITV player on devices (not 100% sure on 4OD or Demand5 however would assume they would be free or a negligible cost). iPlayer even comes in a ready to use format that's compatible with iOS devices and the AppleTV. It's already got the ability to be used in 'bigscreen' mode as well.

Heck they wouldn't have much of a problem getting things like Virgin Anywhere and Sky Go either - both seem happy for 3rd parties to integrate it as it brings in more subscriptions.

For people wondering about the absence of an Amazon channel even though Netflix and Hulu and similar services play just fine with Apple --

Amazon is rumored and probably pretty likely to release their own set top box at some soon point. Rumors are that they wanted it out for the holiday season but that obviously didn't work out.

But the easy answer about it is that Amazon makes their own hardware as options to distribute their content, unlike Netflix and Hulu, and an Apple TV-esque set top box is likely to be added to their lineup soon (or, like, within a year at least).

Please add this channels Apple: FEARnet, Starz Play, Amazon Prime, Showtime Anytime, Encore, IndiePlex Play, Cinemax Go and Popcornflix.

Amazon Prime would be amazing move from Apple if added js.

you can buy a blu ray player for less than $100 or a roku and get amazon. what's the point of an amazon set top box?

Yes, I also use Netflix, but ... um ... you know ... not everything is on Netflix

And not everything is available on Apple TV, but the new channels didn't change that a whole lot. But progress is progress...

Even though they might release their own device does not mean they are not going to bother having their services on other devices because it would be stupid of Amazon. And people still have not explained why it goes against Apple in competition when you can get it on the iPhone oh do not give me a half ass excuse about Amazon Prime you guys try so hard but fail to explain.

We don't know yet, perhaps they will impress us.

Or maybe not, it's barely even a rumor at this point.

Other than it would be everything from Amazon like purchasing streaming movies from Amazon or Music or stuff in the cloud but beyond that what else can a Amazon device do? Could it play video games?

you can already buy streaming movies from amazon via the PS3 and a blu ray player

Gosh I'd love Apple just to say FU all and ditch all the crap appletv apps and put Aereo on there for live tv. Screw that, just buy the freak'n company and litigate away to keep the roll out going.

Hey apple start adding premium cable tv channels. I'd gladly drop my clunky cable box and service pay for $.99 a channel/month service. There's only a few stations I watch anyways, when I even watch TV.

The trend is away from ever escalating cable bills. If they want to provide a reason to buy an Apple TV, they should buy Roku. That's the future. With a lot of luck, Comcast, DirecTV, Dish and Time-Warner will become the next Blockbuster. Remember them?

The purchase of Roku would make Apple a powerful player in the future TV world with all the channels they offer now and the new ones they add everyday. They have already did the work on menus and offer a great streaming experience. Add the new motion control and a 4k TV their influence would be established.

Correct but if added on Apple TV they might have to block from purchasing but could still get it from Amazon.com and stream it through Apple TV or limited to Prime streaming only. But on the iPhone or iPad you can stream your purchases so it all depends what Apple wants as a competition and what they want Amazon to be limited to.

I am curious other than adding new channels did they fix the Netflix streaming issue where Super HD snaps back to SD? This has been a ongoing problem with Apple TV and a lot of people have complained about it.

----------

BBC's been on Apple TV for quite some time.

I don't believe it is in the U.S. only PBS.

This REALLY doesn't make sense

Except that Amazon is a direct competitor to Apple and I doubt both companies are interested in adding an Amazon Video app to the Apple TV. Having it on iOS is one thing but directly on the Apple TV is another (especially with Amazon soon launching an Apple TV-like device of their own).

That being said, I'd love an Amazon video app on the Apple TV but for now using AirPlay to send it from the iPad works great.

OK. So I can download an Amazon app on my iOS device and push the streaming video to my Apple TV. But I cannot access the same video streams via an Apple TV "app". That makes sense to you? It really doesn't make any sense to me at all.

That's like saying you can go to a restaurant and buy a glass of Coke BUT only if you put it in your own container to drink it. Buying a bottle of branded Coke at the same restaurant and setting it on your table, on the other hand, that's totally out of the question.

Yes, I'm sure there is brand positioning involved. In the end, it makes Apple come off as the unnecessary bully. Not that Apple cares.

Like others have already said, this is a worthless update. There is no value in adding channels that require a cable-subscription to watch.

Well, they really aren't that similar. Neither Netflix nor Hulu offer renting/buying movies (including new ones) individually. Amazon does, which makes it a direct competitor to the iTunes store. I'm pretty sure this is why Amazon and other on-demand services such as Vudu are not on Apple TV.

Really surprised that Apple adds "functionality" and all I see from most of you are complaints. Crazy.

I decided to cut the cord 2 years ago because I was tired of paying $100 a month. Since that time I continually search for and figure out ways to get the same content (or similar) for free or less cost.

I have been doing things like watching love BloombergTV on my iPad for free and then AirPlaying it to my TV. Well, this update now allows me to watch it on my TV without the hassle of AirPlay. It's the same scenario as HBOGO where I used to have to use AirPlay and now I can just use the AppleTV.

I currently pay about $13 per month for Netflix and Hulu+ combined (by buying iTunes cards whenever they are discounted). I watch the YouTube app a lot and I use Vimeo and Vevo for music videos that I like.

I watch the Smithsonian app and PBS app (both of which are free).

I sometimes rent a movie or TV show through iTunes.

I listen to my large music collection either via iTunes Match or home share to my computer.

I listen to iTunes Radio.

I watch movies and TV shows on HBOGO and watch sports on ESPN. (These last two I'm only able to because I have a cable subscription that I have "access" to).

I will watch things on Crackle, like Jerry Seinfeld'a show "Comedians in cars drinking coffee", which has only has AirPlay functionality up until now (might have even required mirroring - ugh) - also free!

It's not Apple's fault that you can't buy sub packages directly from ESPN or HBO. That will come one day though. Just give em time.
