Not sure why anyone would buy a Dell UP2715K when for $300 more you can get a whole 5k iMac.

Because all in ones are as smart as having a vcr or dvd player built into your tv set.

That notion fails everywhere except apple thanks to it's marketing.

Nope. It's like laptop. You can output to other monitors til the cows come home, but it doesn't accept any external inputs.

Though if you're good with electronics and a soldering gun, you might be able to rig something up...

Well the non-retina iMac does allow you to use it as an external monitor. So I think Apple could actually allow the Retina to be as well with a software update, so long as it has two thunderbolt ports.

The race for "thinner" and "higher resolution" is killing Apple's computers IMO. The point will be here soon where I have this thin piece of crap that can drive a 5k display with, but can't do much else due to the crippling of hardware/software and the lack of any usefulness...

Yea it sucks for the people that play games or do work on Apple's hardware, but for the crowd that probably makes up the majority of their marketshare now it makes sense to offer the same selling points as the iOS devices - Retina and thin everything. You don't need discrete graphics or hardware that doesn't burn you if all you do is open up Facebook and send a few e-mails.

As for Yosemite, the messiest OS I have ever used be it Linux/Windows/OS X, I'm hoping 10.11 turns out to be Snow Leopard 2.0 or at least Mountain Lion quality. Windows 10 is pretty nice in the demo I've used, so at least there's an alternative.

In a few years, when the iMac is obsolete, the Dell 5K display will be able to migrate to a new computer. The iMac 5K display will not.

I think the iMac 5K should run in display-only mode, the old ones did. Can someone confirm?

Sure, in a few years, who would want a meager 5K display when 25K displays are out. ;-)

The MicroCenter in our city has the 4K Dell, the 5K iMac and the ancient Thunderbolt monitors all located within a few feet of each other. Yes, you can readily tell the difference. The 5K iMac is stunning compared to the other two.

Are Mac computers now going to be bundled with Dell monitors? Is Apple getting out of the monitor business altogether? Looks like Apple is bending over backwards to get Dell 4K and 5K monitors to work.

Will the iMac 5K ever be able to be used as a monitor with a MacPro 2013? Remember we were told the MacPro could not support a 5k monitor when the iMac 5K came out in October, but a little software in Yosemite 10.10.3 made it work. Perhaps a second TB connector on the iMac would fix the problem.

at which point the company could theoretically release a 5K Thunderbolt Display.

Not holding my breath. We've been waiting for years for new displays from Apple.

Even if they did release new ones, most would just complain they cost too much and buy Dells instead anyways.

Can anyone really tell the difference between a 4k and 5k monitor? I know that I surely can't with my aging eyes. When does the PPI race become futile? Seems to me we are already there. Maybe I'm wrong?

4K monitor -> counterpart to a 24' monitor with 1920 * 1080 pixels -> now 3840 * 2160 pixels

5K monitor -> counterpart to a 27' monitor with 2560 * 1440 pixels -> now 5120 * 2880 pixels

My eyes are also not quite so young, but a 5K monitor looks great.

But I'm waiting for a single cable solution, aka Display Port 1.3.

This is great, I'm waiting for the 5K Thunderbolt Display !!!

This alone could make me want to wait for Skylake.

Yep, I am really hoping Apple can deliver a stand alone display. I love the iMac 5k but don't want to get the computer part of it.

Glad I don't have this problem. I'm happy with my 15" retina 220PPI display.

It's not a "problem", it's a feature. Everybody wants to use their computer for different things, no need to diss people that want to use a 5k display.

Agreed. While ability to drive 5K using high-end 15" MBP is nice, dual-cable sounds rather hacky to me. I, too, will wait for Skylake and Thunderbolt 3.

Awww, the jealousy - how cute! :D
Relax! I kid, I kid...

Also 220PPI is sadly not state of the art anymore, there are numerous 15" laptops with 4K displays :-(

While true, 4K on 15" is diminishing return. Unless I sit uncomfortably close, it is very difficult to notice any pixels on retina Macs. I sit about a foot away from 15" MBP and it is only when I sit about 6 inches to notice pixels. And let's not forget performance and batter life penalty when driving additional pixels.

I've tried LR. I just can't get over the ugly UI. I may have to go that route someday, but right now Aperture does exactly what I need it to do.

I absolutely love the Lightroom UI... what's wrong with it? Also, didn't Aperture get discontinued and replaced by the Photos app?

In a few years the Dell 5K display will be worth half what the iMac 5K solution will be worth, thanks to everybody and their momma from Asia making a cheaper/better 5K display.

When that time comes you could easily sell the iMac and come out further ahead. Hell.. might even be 8K units available by then.

The reason why the Apple all-in-one solution works well isnt due to marketing.. it's due to Apple making hardware/software that ages really well. Hell my fiancee was still using her 2009 Macbook Unibody (the plastic white one) as her daily computer right up until somebody stole it a couple months ago. And even then thanks to the latest versions of OSX.. it is trackable and will send us an alert & location information if ever comes online again.

I dont know of anyone still using a 6 year old Windows laptop.

When something is built to last 10 years or so.. all in one isnt such a bad idea. VCR's & DVD's were horrible solutions because video media formats change so quickly. While your car for example.. is a great all-in-one idea.

Good point!

I agree with you on that.
However I also thought the retina resolution was overkill back in the day - now I cannot accept anything under retina resolution

So does this mean we will not see a 5k Apple cinema display for a while?

Everything.
With 5k, you can edit 4k and still have 1k pixels left over for your video editing app side bars and other things.

Apple has never been about adding pixels just to add pixels. The rMBP was the first of its kind, PC manufacturers didn't start trying to add 4K displays until the rMBP came out, in an effort to simply one-up Apple. Even then, the laptops that have these displays cost the same or more than a rMBP. I bet Dell is franticly trying to add the 5K or 6K display to their XPS One 27.

Smartphones are even worse. The 401 ppi in the 6 plus literally made no difference during normal use over my iPhone 5, and I have to get extremely close to the display to even notice a pixel, yet everyone feels the need to add 2560x1440 display to a smartphone.

For the most part, there's nothing wrong with having a DVD player or VCR build into your TV. Especially these days, when even the cheap, low-end players displays good quality pictures.

The only real caveat is to make sure that the TV still has enough inputs of the proper type so that you can plug in any accessories that aren't built into it (such as a blu-ray player, or a game console).

All-in-one PCs mostly fail because of the way they're built. The early ones running Windows took up as much (or more) space as a monitor and tower, had significantly worse components than the iMacs of the day, and cost about half-again to twice as much. (I know, I worked at CompUSA back when every PC maker and their half-wit uncles were trying to out iMac the iMac.)

The availability of Intel's Skylake platform with DisplayPort 1.3 support later this year will enable Apple to update Macs with support for external 5K displays that function over a single cable, at which point the company could theoretically release a 5K Thunderbolt Display.

Hmmm, I think I may have to wait for the Skylake Macs before I upgrade my computers. I've always wanted to be able to get one of the rMBPs and have it hook up to one (or two) retina Thunderbolt Displays. This makes me think it'll happen when Skylake comes out.

Well, I guess that solidifies that the AMD Radeon R9 M370X is superior to the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M that it replaces. (Though, given that it is now two years old, it had better better be.) Here's hoping it is more reliable than the last set of 15" (and 17") MacBook Pro discrete graphics from AMD (as well as on par with the reliability of the 750M so far). The 2011 AMD Mac graphics have left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth as I'm sure it has for many at this point.
