Here's hoping that they at least double the RAM in the refreshed iPod Touch to 512MB like the iPhone 4, even if they stick with the Apple A4.

Presumably with the elimination of the iPod Shuffle, the price of the iPod Nano would move down and make room for cheaper iPod Touches.

It would be nice if Apple no longer offers 8GB models of the iPhone and iPod Touch and bumps things to 16GB for a minimum. With the size of apps ever increasing, some games for instance being ~1GB when installed, 8GB is very limiting considering you still need room for music, video, along with some room whatever photos and 720p video you take with the cameras.

I like the idea of killing off the 8gb line and making 16gb the minimum. After the ~900mb or so that iOS takes up leaving you with ~7gb for your content, there just isn't enough space for all of your content without having the constant feeling of sacrificing content in order to have space for other things; the constant managing it takes to make sure you can fit what you want when you want on the device is dreadful.

Another thing, I don't know how they are going to make this media event as good as it needs to be without new hardware other than A5. Once you set the standard for something (i.e. huge improvements year by year as seen in the past iPhone upgrades), it's not only an embarrassment for the company to release something less but it's a hard hit on reputation.

And while the iPhone will STILL sell regardless, I highly believe that the iPhone needs to distance itself from its competitors more. The new fabled design will definitely do that.

Don't be so sure. This is being held in an auditorium at Apple HQ, not the Moscone Center where big announcements are made.

Low end device people.

It says right in the post that this is the low end device, which corroborates the Wall Street Journal and the New York Time's claim that Apple is releasing two phones, one low end more cost effective device and the new iphone 5. Did some of you already forget this information, I know its getting hard to keep track. Stop hating just because you're not due for an upgrade yet, haha!:)

Crud, that means it will be difficult/impossible to know when the old versions have moved out of the supply chain.

Had the same thought. Been waiting to replace my 2nd gen Touch, but I don't want to buy a new old one. I was hoping they would add at least add one new obvious feature so I know I'm buying the latest hardware revision.

If Apple releases an iPhone 4S, It'll be alongside the iPhone 5.

So Basically, It wont be JUST the iPhone 4S.

It Either Be..
iPhone 5
iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S.

As in, you guys really didn't see this coming.
Didn't see this coming?

Have you been living under a rock?

I'll admit I didn't see the Amazon Kindle Fire coming, especially not at $200, but the iPhone 5 will be a shock to absolutely nobody.

There's a lot of information that says it's a hardware cap... that while the guts of an :apple:TV can do the "heavy lifting" of processing 1080p, the output is hard capped at 720p on the current model.

Obviously, it is a good reason to motivate an upgrade to a third version when that resolution limit is lifted.

I've streamed 1080P video to my HDTV via the Apple TV 2 using IOS 5. It works but it does max out the SOC. but it still works.

In any case 1080P is nothing more than eye candy .

John Gruber has already hinted that there will be only 1 new iPhone. And when John (well connected) Gruber says something, you can pretty much take it to the bank!

Well, the low-end iPhone that I mentioned would not be a new iPhone, it would basically be an iPhone 4 (with possibly minimal touch-ups) for a lower price.

I know Apple too well to think most/many/any of the lofty rumors floating around will come to light.

I think it'll be a basic upgrade--speed, memory, camera, etc. with most of the talk during the presentation relating to the voice integration feature (especially since the name of the event is "let's talk, iPhone), facebook/twitter integration and the other iOS5 features. Thinking it'll be anything more is just setting yourself up for dissapointment.

Remember folks, here is how this always goes down: (1) everyone gets their hopes up, (2) Apple delivers a solid, but not amazing update, (3) people bitch and moan about how they fell short, how they dropped the ball, etc. and (4) slowly, over time, most come to accept the update as being good, but not great and finally (5) the rumor mill starts for iPhone 6

wash, rinse, repeat.

I considered the last September iPod updates to be excellent, and the iPad 2 update was great (it was about what I expected). This iPhone update should at least have the same vibe as the iPad 2 update - thinner, faster, etc.

But you never know so let's just wait.

i really dont get the stupid "4S" bs, even with minor changes its still a new iPhone. why not just call it a 5

You may be streaming 1080p files but what's arriving at your HDTV is 720p. Again, the current :apple:TV appears to have the "heavy lifting" part built inside, but a gate at the end down-converts 1080p to 720p before it sends it to your HDTV. You may have an HDTV that is then up-converting it back to 1080p but up-converting 720p to 1080p is not the same as watching native 1080p.

Eye candy or not is eye of the beholder stuff. When connecting the native video from the 1080 HD Camcorder to the HDTV and then comparing it to the :apple:TV render of the exact same video, EVERYONE in my household can see the difference. Rather than having to go to that trouble, I'd just love to buy some new hardware from Apple that removes that down-conversion gate.

I will be surprised if after this long a wait we are just given a more minor update.

Ok, I'm tired of reading this crap because it's a false statement.

Just because there isn't a redesign, doesn't mean it's just a "minor update"!

When has Apple done a "minor update" to their iPhone lineup?

Well, an update is an update.

Your avatar is giving me a seizure, by the way.

Iphone 4S

I don't know why this is a surprise to people.
Apple are clearly going to only release an iPhone 4S with iOS next week.
Everyone who is on an iPhone 4 on a 2 year contract will can rest easy, as the real update will be next year, with the redesigned iPhone 5 and iOS6.
Why you lot get your knickers in a twist with "but iOS must come with iPhone 5"!.
no, it mustn't.
apple does what it likes.
thus iPhone 4S with iOS5
AND next year, iPhone 5 with iOS6.
and, no, this won't mess up Apple's numbering sequence.
it was purely coincindental that iPhone 4 came out with iOS4.

Simples.

Has anyone considered that the number "1" that appears at the end of the message, may mean that at the end of the announcement Steve/Tom will pull a "One more thing..." and announce something such as an iPhone5 or another magical unicorn device? :apple:

There will be an iPhone 5

according to 9to5mac "Additionally, the iPhone codename of N94 has appeared in the iOS SDK on numerous occasions."

This article does not mention that :)

What about the possibility that what everyone is calling the "4s" is will just be designated the iphone 4, with the internal upgrades/camer etc. and replace those that are currently being produced, while the N94 everyone has seen will become the iphone 5?

am i totally off base here? it seems logical that way apple doesnt have to adopt the S naming system again.

It will still need an "Nxx" number for the 4s replacement. My guess is there is only going to be one phone, the 5. The 4 will go to 8gb, and be sold at 99$. While the 5 will come with 32/64, and have A5/4" screen. Same ram, new os.

I'm confident there will be a "5". The secret of the "5" has been too closely guarded to be revealed in internal inventory number updates via "Mr. X". If Apple has gone to this much trouble to keep the "5" so secure, they're not going to let the cat out of the bag in this way. Instead, they'll just add the inventory numbers on launch day.

It's been 16 months. Something will be arriving besides an enhanced "4." Since the event has singled itself out as an iPhone event (even got iPod people wondering about discontinued units, etc), that "something" will be an impressive new iPhone. Not because iOS happens to be on version 5 but just because it makes the most sense.

If in the last 16 months Apple has only been able to enhance the guts of "4", they can easily put those guts in a new case design and call it "5". Sling a few adjectives like "magical", etc- just like the iPad 2 launch- and (especially) the crowd (here) will embrace it as a "5", gripe & whine about what it is lacking, then pre-order it in almost the same breath. When it arrives, they'll post how much better it is than the old "4," how much snappier mobile Safari is on the new one, "I don't know how "6" could get any better than this", "Die Samsung/HTC/etc die", etc.
