The fact of the matter that everyone seems to be overlooking is that, while I'm sure Apple is taking a cut of the ringtone sales, the labels are almost certainly mandating the extra price as well as ensuring that only iTunes-purchased tracks are being used (wouldn't want you using that Britney Spears single you grabbed from bittorrent)...

So what happens if you compose your own song and import it into itunes to listen. Can you still not make a ringtone our of your own personal music?

Ha. I made my own mp3 ringtones for my SLVR, which has itunes on it and cost me 50 bucks. Granted it isn't as slick as the iphone, but the battery lasts like 3 weeks without a charge sometimes and it's literally half the size of the iphone. I'm not saying it is better, but I have several ringtones from physical CDs that I bought and imported into itunes. Spend 2-3 minutes in garageband splicing the thing up and a few seconds uploading over USB (or a couple minutes over bluetooth), and I have to wonder why apple even bothered with this "feature" in the iTMS. Oh wait, I just realized why they would bother—free money from suckers.

Sorry suckers. I already bought that music.

Did I mention that some of my self-made ringtones are almost 2 minutes long?

ha. Apple.

Totally pulling the newbie card here, but is it always this frequent that posters repeat themselves and ask the same questions that have already been posted/responded to?

I'm not paying a $1 for a 30 second ringtone when I already paid the same thing for the whole song, but at least it is an option.

yeay another feature i'll never use!

i want gps dagnabit!

I wrote an algorithm to triangulate a location when you're within range of three cell towers. Course, I don't know how to get Lat/Lon data from the cell towers, and I'm not sure if you can pass that data directly to google maps, but it's a start.

alright, can anyone add ringtones for free?

I tried changing to m4r and putting on the library. now it doesn't add as ringtones but in regular music library.

Here's what I did.
1. Get music from iTunes
2. Edit on SoundStudio
3. Put AIFF on iTunes
4. Convert to AAC
5. Get it out from iTunes
6. Change .m4a to .m4r
7. Open in iTunes

By this point it should add itself to Ringtones but it just adds itself on Music.

Did iTunes figure out a way to block this?

Help me guys..

Try out a song without the Bell, it might work...I was checking into "Rush" and the only one listed on the new album as compatible was "Spindrift." I tried to convert "Far Cry," and it worked.

Nice! I'll try "We Hold On" when I get home tonight. ;-)

Are you for real? Why would you want a ringtone that is two minutes long? Overkill? Sounds as if you like listening to your phone "ring" rather than use it as a phone.

I really don't get the mentality of paying for a tune you already own to have the 'privilege' of it as a ringtone. You can do it for free with every other phone via Bluetooth or USB.

Actually no, you can't. A lot of carriers, in the US at least, disable this functionality even though it's built-in to the phone. Why? So you'll buy the ringtones?

This is ridiculous that everyone is complaining about this - you pay $1.98 for a high quality ringtone. 500,000 may not be a lot in the overall catalog of music but I'm sure it's more choices than T-Mobile provides me. Further more, I pay $1.59 for a ringtone from them. I don't get to choose what section of the song it's from and I don't get a full copy of the song. I just get the ringtone and if I don't like the section they chose to make into a ringtone? That's my problem.

With the iPhone, yeah, it sucks that you have to pay but that's how cellphones work in general. Most phones don't allow you to make your own ringtones and use them. So $0.99 cents to buy a song, then $0.99 cents to make a ringtone? That's not a bad deal.

Apple has to meet their partner (AT&T) half way on this. And considering everything AT&T agreed to (namely subscription payment sharing), I'm sure Apple doesn't mind this minor concession.

I didn't know the part of Apple was being played by Robin Hood... last I knew they need to do what's in the best interest of their shareholders, not the general public (unless I missed the press release that they had switched to non-profit status).

Yet every other phone including Microsoft's Windows Mobile phones allow you to make any file you want a ringtone, screw Apple.

False, my AT&T razr and Windows Mobile smartphone allow any audio file to be assigned as a ringtone (though you need to buy Motorola's software on the razr to get the ringtones on through USB otherwise you can send audio files via email and apply as ringtone).

Error Message

I tried to purchase my first ringtone. First, I bought the song for $1.29. Then, I attempted to purchase the ringtone for an additional .99 <sucker>. So I clicked on the little bell and it took me to the itunes agreement. I accepted then proceeded to make my ringtone "just so". When I clicked "buy" I was met with the following error message: COULD NOT CREATE RINGTONE. AN UNKNOWN ERROR OCCURRED (-42160). THERE WAS AN ERROR IN THE ITUNES STORE. PLEASE TRY AGAIN LATER.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Kristen

Don't blame Apple here. Apple's iPods allow you to put whatever music you want on it. I have the option to legally purchase music through iTunes Music Store and play them on an iPod. Or, I can illegally download an album through some bittorrent website and play that music on the exact same iPod. Apple gives you freedom to do what you want with that iPod and doesn't dictate where you are obtaining this music from.

Now look at the situation with the iPhone. Why would Apple choose to cripple the iPhone and not also include this "crippling" with their iPod line. Doesn't make sense for Apple to just arbitrarily pick a device of theirs to limit what it can do. I suspect AT&T and the record labels are what is causing all of this headache.

OK, so now that my library has updated a bit, I've turned my previously-purchased copy of "Destroy Everything You Touch" by Ladytron into my first (and primary) ringtone. SWEET. Heheh I could grow to like this, IF the collection of ringtones grows at a decent rate AND if they show the ringtone icon all the time on the music store (without you having to toggle it on for every darn search!)

And to the poster who brought up the idea of a Mitch Hedberg ringtone --- YES!!! :D

That sucks...Ladytron no longer seems available to be made into a ringtone

I for one don't care one bit about ringtones as I use vibe all the time. In fact, I personally think ringtones make people look like idiots, but to each their own. At the same time, I just checked out sprint to see what I'd have to pay for a pre-selected ringtone and it's $2.50. I know we think Apple should be giving these things away, but come on. $.99 is pretty good, even $1.98 is not bad, you get the ringtone and the entire song. I can understand that it's so easy to do for free. At least selecting a start and stop point and exporting it... But others sell them because there are rights involved, and apple has to do the same.

It's really no big deal. If you want a ringtone, $.99 isn't the worst out there, especially when you can select the segment you want. IMO, the only downside is that iTunes is becoming more and more bloated.

I'm as big of a fan of Apple as I can be, but this just blows goats. I hope that this convoluted mess that won't support converting music you own into a ringtone can be blamed on the labels and is not an attempt by Apple to open up another revenue stream. If it is the latter I am afraid, very afraid :(

iTunes sucks

I rather give away my money to some one who hacks all those things.

Jobs is charging for everything! what a greedy person, he is hanging too much with Gates.

So, I purchased a ringtone...

...and when my phone syncs I get a message that the file wasn't copied to my iPhone because "you're not authorized to play it on this computer." Huh? Anyone else seen that one?

Actually, I use these for my alarm clock in the morning. They're the opening track and the second dungeon track from an old japanese side-scrolling platformer game called Zeliard that was released in the States by Sierra On-Line in the late 80s that I played when I was a kid.

I still think it's some of the best video game music ever composed, and I listen to a lot of video game music. It also makes for a great alarm when the volume is set to 'high.'

Hm. I'm not playing. I never buy any music that isn't DRM-free (I've only recently started buying from iTunes, and I only buy iTunes Plus), and similarly, I'm not going to pay again for a song I've already bought. If I can't easily make a ringtone from a song I've legitimately bought, I'll just use the defaults, or find a hack. That's a shame for them, I think, because if their ringtone policy were reasonable it would give me an extra reason to buy more songs.

Yes, I got that message too after having purchased and made three ringtones. I then put the iPhone on the dock to sync it and that is when I got that message. What the -- ???
