I can't activate it. My iTunes is v.7.4.1(2) but I don't see any "ringtone" when right clicking or COMMAND-J-ing anywhere. I also don't have the spotlight-esque search with the drop down popups.

Just give it a little while and it'll pop up! Still, only 40 songs in my 1500 song library are ringtone compatible :-(
It's not like I have old music either, I'm 17 so most of my music is within the last 5 years with the exceptions of a few 80's tracks and some Aretha and Dionne Warwick. I hope they get more compatible soon!

its not a matter of apple deciding who you get to choose as a ringtone. Its the music companies who agree to it.

If it was only up to Apple, every song on iTunes would be compatible...this limitation is from the record companies.

Try out a song without the Bell, it might work...I was checking into "Rush" and the only one listed on the new album as compatible was "Spindrift." I tried to convert "Far Cry," and it worked.

I now see the bells but I only see them for the most recently purchased album. Kind of strange they wouldn't show up for other purchases as well.

I was just on the iTunes music store and only 5 of the top 100 songs have ringtone capabilities. That's kind of sad. I hope they have more songs that can be turned into ringtones soon.

Ringtone Bell Icon

Apparently, you have to have at least 1 song in your music library that is available for conversion to a ringtone. Then the Ringtone option in the Library sidebar wakes up. Try downloading Aretha Franklin's Respect. Let me know what other song work, too.

I've got bells and a "Ringtones" item has appeared in my source list showing the ringtones I hacked using the file extension method. I'm running iTunes 7.4.1.

Same here, but on a quick check it looks like the method for adding more (dragging M4R into iTunes) no longer adds new ringtones to the list. Luckily I had already added pretty much all the ones I wanted. I was also finally able to remove the "ghost" duplicates that were created while goofing around with the M4R hack.

*****EDIT*****PROBLEM SOLVED!!*****

The M4R hack still works!!!

(1) Create AAC file for use, change extension to M4R using "Get Info"
(2) Navigate to /iTunes/iTunes Music/Ringtones, drag file into that folder
(3) Drag M4R file into iTunes
(4) Go back to Ringtones folder in Finder, change extension back to M4A
(5) Sync iPhone

Just added a new ringtone this morning from a track of my own, non-iTunes purchased, using this method. Shows up in the "Ringtones" playlist on the left sidebar, in the Ringtones tab in the iPhone settings, and syncs/plays as expected on the iPhone itself.

If you just try to create a ringtone from any of your purchased songs, I noticed suddenly you'll start seeing the bells next to some of your purchased songs.

Some others are reporting that it worked for a random song they tried converting to a ringtone... but I have the same track and while before I attempted converting a song it showed no bell, "Far Cry" by Rush does show a bell now next to it.

So it doesn't seem that any song will work, but that if you're not yet seeing bells in the Purchased Songs view, try selecting and creating a ringtone and it may trigger the system to update your view.

I just did a couple off the Casino Royale soundtrack and they work great.

So how quickly do we expect to see 7.4.2 to block the hack? Or do you think that they just needed to show the labels a good-faith effort to prevent this sort of thing and now they'll let it go?

Just spotted the bell icon on Depeche Mode's Precious...

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=82098671&s=143441&i=82098328

also seen on an couple others... haven't tried downloading them yet - any one try it yet?

Ooooo, good song. Too bad I already have it as a ring tone through iFuntastic 3.0.3 :p

I don't see the need for this update. I'll just wait till the next "actual" iPhone firmware update, that should be interesting. Until then, why upgrade to a program that just cripples features on my phone?

I'm still not interested. My SE can use any sound file as a ringtone. I see no future for the iTS ringtones.

I dont know if anyone has said this as I am not reading this whole post but if you arent seeig the ringtone features just try shutting down and starting iTunes a few times. Each time I did so I got all the new features to pop up. Took a few times to do so.

How to check for your ringtone songs

Can someone tell me who is going to waste their time in browser mode in iTunes to find songs that can be made into ringtones? Unless I am having a *really* blonde moment, I cannot find a way to just look up a song or artist without going through all the hoops that iTunes in browser mode requires. It takes forever just to find a compatible song! Also, why isn't there an easy way to check if songs I already purchased are ringtone ready?

1. Press cmd+J and check the box to activate viewing the Ringtones
2. Click the Ringtone symbol in the top of the column.

This way you will sort your music library based on the songs Ringtone status. Songs with ringtones will appear grouped together at the top (or bottom if you click twice) of the list.

Very Funny!

This is very strange. If you search i-tunes for "ringtones" you get a bunch of albums from Captain Audio with sexy female and male voices saying "your phone is ringing", etc. However, these ringtones don't have bells next to them, so...you can buy a ringtone, but only listen to it on your computer.

Now lets suppose for a minute that i-tunes adds a bell. Would you then have to pay $.99 for the 20 second ringtone, then pay an additional $.99 to put the ringtone on to your phone? Probably yes. DEFINATELY very weak.
