It seems that all brands will now rush to support both CarPlay and Android Auto, fearing to be surpassed by their competitors. And that's great if it means that we'll get both solutions in most cars quickly.

Not so fast. If the hold-outs are anything like Toyota who revel in the knowledge owners have to pay $60+ for an updated maps CD for their terrible navigation system, there is still a LONG way to go.

Car manufacturers are not so willing to give up their premium pricing on no-name, proprietary Navigation and hands-free systems. :(

There's no reason that they can't implement both on the same head unit. It's just a set of protocols.

I assume both Apple and Google would want some kind of certification of touchscreen responsiveness before giving their blessing. Remember that there are some pretty terrible resistive touch screens out there that would probably provide a poor experience for both CarPlay and Android Auto. It's one reason why I don't see much hope for people who recently bought a brand new car getting a good experience unless they completely rip out whatever they have for something new.

Where in the heck is Lexus!?!
I never see them listed and they are such a good fit for this.

Looking at how bad the touchscreen is in the demonstrations for Carplay in the Ferrari, I'm not sure. Touchscreen isn't even a requisite, as the UI can be navigated with buttons, as indicated on Apple's website.

If I were a car manufacturer, I wouldn't want to exclude iOS users, who are among the most affluent potential customers.

In fact it would be idiot for a car maker to offer "Android only" just as it would be lunatic for them to offer "iOS only".

And what about Windows?

This is where government should insist on an open platform. I buy my cars and drive them into the ground. If I buy a new car today, I want it to have simply a screen that can connect with its systems, so it will be future-proof.

I don't want to find out, "Sorry your Jeep Cherokee is not compatible with iOS Carply Version X.0. Please upgrade your car" lol.

Wha? My 2012 Mazda 3 has bluetooth with bluetooth audio support.

It's not a great system (doesn't show Artist/Song title in the HUD, address book set up sucks, etc.), but it works for playing audio or making calls from my phone.

As does my 2011 Mazda! It's great.

Gotta love marketing departments, huh? Specifically holding back features so they can have their "product matrix."

Based on other requirements I had it was impossible for me to get bluetooth. I'd have willingly paid more, but money wasn't the issue. By moving up to the level that has bluetooth I'd have to give up other features that mattered more to me.

So no matter how much money you have, it's impossible to get everything you want.

I'm still waiting for the Pioneer update for the Nex line.

Me too.

I am sure there will be plenty of "noise" when it is released. Didn't see one on their website but do you know if Pioneer has a "mailing list" you can sign up for to be notified when it is available?

And any manufacturer who stuck to one or the other would be shooting themselves in the foot. In the near future, EVERYONE will have a smart phone, and 95% of them will be CarPlay or Android Auto compliant. Cutting off half of your potential market would be a poor marketing decision.

I just bought a new Jeep Cherokee...Jeep had better offer an upgrade for current owners of Uconnect.

My take is they will ended up offering a hardware swap-out. I have been delaying a new car Jeep til the CarPlay deal is shipping.

Being that a lexus is an expensive Toyota and Toyota (I believe) is a CarPlay partner, one would be led to believe that lexus would also be CarPlay partner.
Can you show me one place where it says Toyota is listed as a partner?
I have not seen it at all.
(Also, something is only *expensive* if you can't afford it.)

Oh I just saw Toyota listed on Apple's web site as a partner!
Hope this will include Lexus as well!
YIPEEEEE!

Wish cars just had an open system that supported any phone.

My 2012 Ford Edge has Microsoft Sync that does the exact same things I'm seeing here and works with all phone OSs. It's just a Bluetooth connection. I don't know how CarPlay (or the Android version) will differ but I suspect the car 'OS' will rely more heavily on the phone OS. Microsoft Sync is probably a more full-blown OS rather than just a front-end. This new way of doing things puts the responsibility of updates etc on the phone manufacturers vs the car manufacturers. Probably a better way.

I highly doubt any car manufacturer will support just one phone OS. People change their phones way too often. No car manufacturer will be willing to shut out potential buyers because their phone won't connect.

Unlikely as Audi MMI has no touch screen input what-so-ever. Only a touch pad on top of the controller nob.

So now that Dodge is on the list along with Subaru will 2013 models be updated to work with CarPlay? Just curious because I'm not sure what additional components besides a software update are needed to make my 8.4 inch screen in my 2013 Dodge Charger work with CarPlay.

That's not how it works. At least I know with Mercedes it's not.

Mercedes will support both the iOS and Android platforms. The interface will change depending on which OS the phone that's plugged in is using.

A touchscreen will not be a pre-requisite for CarPlay and Android Auto.

Agreed. I expect Carplay / Android Auto will be a premium upgrade above on board navigation, etc. Depending on the brand, you can expect that option to run $2000 +

So many people have smart phones nowadays, this would obliterate their pricey upgrade schemes. Unfortunately, this will be another "feature" available only to the wealthiest and the adoption rate will be slow.

Hopefully, I'm wrong. Time will tell.

I wonder if Apple will have any say-so in pricing.

I'm sure they wouldn't want to see their baby flop because of car manufacturers' pricing.
