I bought a 2012 Focus and was promised that I would see an upgrade of Sync to support the AppLink platform...no such upgrade has materialized in 2 1/2 years :-(

That was why I lol'd :(

Car manufacturers arent known to do anything out of the goodness of their hearts, to support their customers.

Does anyone know what the infotainment packages and/or CarPlay are like in the newer Toyota Tacomas?

Agreed. I expect Carplay / Android Auto will be a premium upgrade above on board navigation, etc. Depending on the brand, you can expect that option to run $2000 +

So many people have smart phones nowadays, this would obliterate their pricey upgrade schemes. Unfortunately, this will be another "feature" available only to the wealthiest and the adoption rate will be slow.

Hopefully, I'm wrong. Time will tell.

I really doubt they'll charge much, if anything, above whatever you pay for a touchscreen electronics system. Even the nav option on most new cars is under 2k (still a ripoff though). Ford only charges $495 for sync.

I just bought a new Jeep Cherokee...Jeep had better offer an upgrade for current owners of Uconnect.

I hope so as well. I just bought a Dodge Dart and the touch screen is cool but I can tell it would be much nicer to use if it ran Apple's software. I believe it is resistive though so it will always be limited by hardware.

Recently bought a 2014 Mazda CX-5 and not loving the infotainment system it came with so glad to see Mazda on board.

haha so much for the argument on here that 'luxury brands' only will use the Apple system and the cheaper ones will use Android.

I kinda hope they will have a system that offers both, perhaps something that will automatically switch between the iOS and Android version depending on the phone OS you use?
Hmm...when CarPlay was announced I saw all this faux outrage from people (who should know better) that their choice of car would be dependent on what phone OS they use and how awful it was that CarPlay wasn't platform neutral. Then Android Auto is announced working basically the same way as CarPlay does and nary a peep from anyone...

This is great, but I want to see a live implementation first!

And I suppose it sucks for the car manufacturers that have poured millions into developing their car systems. But, I could see this just being a software overlay. Is there any reason it wouldn't be backwards compatible with existing systems?

With car update and replacement cycles, will anyone care about car play or android by the next time I buy a car? Just bought first car in almost 11 years. At least it has Siri integration. How many phones will I go through in that time?

My take is they will ended up offering a hardware swap-out. I have been delaying a new car Jeep til the CarPlay deal is shipping.

We've made a similar decision to wait till the first generation is out. Dealers can't even get the info on carplay from US or EU headquarters whether it will be on car x or y ... which production starts two months from now for the '15 model.

Given that it is a bit of a game changer and if you hold onto your car from new till it is not economical to repair any more, then, I figure it is better to wait.

I'm also still curious what will happen when little CarPlay Protocol/Firmware/OS 1.0 goes not only from 1.0 to 1.1 etc but to 2.0 or 3.0. Is the head unit user upgradeable and future proof from the get-go? ... or?

This is certainly good news for Apple & very concerning for the current 800 gorilla of the North American car radio market. :apple:

What about Clear Channel? Might this force them to actually play some decent music once in a while?

That's like with the glitches / features in my head unit when it comes to navigation.

It knows and can draw certain 100yr old streets, but can't guide you to them. It will get you part way there and then when you're leaving a numbered road, it stops "use the directional arrow to guide you".

New maps don't help.
No new firmware for the radio/nav.

Just buy a new car with the newer head unit or a new head unit to the tune of $1500k.

My parents just bought a new jeep as well. They love it.

Sadly, Jeep is starting to stand-out as one of the few brands that haven't even announced (to my knowledge) any intentions of incorporating CarPlay into their fleet. I don't know if they ever intend to do so.

Didn't they just announce? And wasn't this the very point of this specific MacRumors article upon which you are commenting?

Well, I guess it's nice to see that now all of the potential car manufacturers I may possibly purchase from when I DO buy a new vehicle in 2-3 years are on board with carplay AND android auto. Hopefully by then they'll be wireless too.

In the meantime, I'll consider buying an aftermarket head unit for my current vehicle, but I won't seriously consider it until carplay is wireless.

Still waiting on Honda to show their commitment beyond just having their name listed.

Cool. Considering that the 2013 model Mazda I just bought didn't even come with bluetooth I look forward to experiencing Apple CarPlay sometime around 2020.

I have a 2011 Mazda 3 and it has Bluetooth; so I get Siri handsfree and Pandora and music, and of course phone

what Mazda did you get?

It seems that all brands will now rush to support both CarPlay and Android Auto, fearing to be surpassed by their competitors. And that's great if it means that we'll get both solutions in most cars quickly.

This takes away their "It's got the Nav" $2500 option package for 4 year old maps in a low res GPS. I bet they're pissed.

Mazda makes affordable, reliable, stylish and tech-savvy cars that have more options than competitors in the same price range. I've been waiting on them to announce iPod integration for a long time, so I'm thrilled to see CarPlay announced.
