Mazda3

I just bought a 2014 Mazda3 with Mazda Connect so hopefully they will support it in the future by adding Carplay via software update.

I would really like to have CarPlay on my 2011 Alfa Romeo Giulietta. The problem is that it has the previous RadioNav, instead of the new UConnect (with is present in the new Fiats, Chryslers, Jeep, and so on). I think they won't release a software update to make it compatible, but I would really want :(

My parents just bought a new jeep as well. They love it.

Sadly, Jeep is starting to stand-out as one of the few brands that haven't even announced (to my knowledge) any intentions of incorporating CarPlay into their fleet. I don't know if they ever intend to do so.

Did you not read this in the story?

Fiat Chrysler group: Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, JEEP, and Ram.

Do we really need cars tied to specific phone platforms?

yes. having used the crummy solutions from third-parties like Pioneer -- yes.

no point in me using their crummy software when my phone is better.

----------

I'm just considering it Vaporware at this point. This was announced in 2013 - over a year ago - and we've yet to see it in ANY car or aftermarket product. What's the hold up?

coding and engineering takes time.

Wha? My 2012 Mazda 3 has bluetooth with bluetooth audio support.

It's not a great system (doesn't show Artist/Song title in the HUD, address book set up sucks, etc.), but it works for playing audio or making calls from my phone.

Maybe he bought an SV. I love my 2012 Skyactiv Mazda 3.

(ahaha, querias :D)

I don't that will ever happen.
Even with UConnect (i have it on the Giulietta MY2014) i really doubt they will let us to "retrofit" CarPlay or any other OS on it. :(

Why would they be pissed? Now they can offer the $4000 "It's got the Carplay" option package on top of that.

Apple has demonstrated in the past they exert a bit more control over third party partners than most. I very much doubt apple would play ball if they made it a pricey exclusive. The most automakers will likely be allowed to get away with is making it the next tier up from absolute bottom...maybe including fancier, sharper, larger screens in higher trim levels.

Automakers are stuck over a barrel because as soon as one of them plays ball with apple (and google - they're probably working the same angles), they have a huge advantage over the rest. Apple and Google have no interest in making the automakers more money off exorbitant upgrade fees...they just want the platform in as many cars as possible to sell their own products.

Likely what we'll see is the base model will be without carplay/android auto, and everything above will have it, with better and bigger/better displays, buttons, etc the higher you get.

Still no Porsche? Come on already! Hope to get it in my 2017 Cayman GTS!

Also, no upgrade announcements? Should be an easy firmware update for most modern cars.

The best music in my ear is when I actually turn my. radio off.

You're driving it wrong...

I'm also still curious what will happen when little CarPlay Protocol/Firmware/OS 1.0 goes not only from 1.0 to 1.1 etc but to 2.0 or 3.0. Is the head unit user upgradeable and future proof from the get-go? ... or?

One of the patents that Tesla is giving away for free to the entire automotive industry is the IP for upgrading the in-car electronics via internet connection.

While Tesla has a great interface with smart-cars, they have made no announcements concerning CarPlay nor Android Car. Ideally, I'd love to see the Apple or Google offerings become a view in that huge center stack screen in the Tesla S.

----------

I hope the new 2015 Ford F-150 has this feature. Glad to see Ford get rid of Sync.

Same here. Been told that the Microsoft name on Ford products have actually hurt some sales in technically affluent regions such as the California Bay Area, Boston metro and Austin.

Detroit has met their match concerning negotiations with Apple. I don't see CarPlay being that much or a premium in any vehicle per terms the automotive manufacturer will sign.

My take is that the first model year with CarPlay in specific models and how the sales volume changes will tell a lot of Apple negotiating block.

----------

haha so much for the argument on here that 'luxury brands' only will use the Apple system and the cheaper ones will use Android.

I kinda hope they will have a system that offers both, perhaps something that will automatically switch between the iOS and Android version depending on the phone OS you use?

Keep in mind that many automotive brands do not do their own electronics these days by license from OEMs and other Tier One suppliers. My take is that the big lynch-pin in this deal is Delphi Automotive.

They just moved into Silicon Valley to an office in Mountain View near Google just two years ago leaving most of their GM Delco legacy back in Kokomo, Indiana. Also, there are no UAW workers in their Silicon Valley office.

Delphi provides automotive electronics and entertainment systems for almost half the automotive industry. If Delphi is on-board with CarPlay or Android Car, then so is the rest of the industry.

My only wish for CarPlay is for Apple to give CarPlay users the ability to use the Google iOS maps app. Because frankly, where I am, a sun compass would have a better chance of getting me to the right place than Apple Maps.

I very much doubt that Apple has anything to say about what car makers choose to do and how they choose to do it. It is an openish standard that can be implemented as the car makers see fit.

EDIT: Nor is it an "essential" feature by any means, meaning that it likely wont be a deal-breaker for anybody that is looking to buy a new car.

Is VW looking into using carplay ?

Audi is on the list, and VW Group has usually been rather effective about optimizing the use of accessories across all makes and models, so I would be inclined to say "yes".

Not so fast. If the hold-outs are anything like Toyota who revel in the knowledge owners have to pay $60+ for an updated maps CD for their terrible navigation system, there is still a LONG way to go.

Car manufacturers are not so willing to give up their premium pricing on no-name, proprietary Navigation and hands-free systems. :(

FTR, my 2004 Toyota's pretty much gotten me everywhere I need to go for the last ten years. Not fancy, no 3D-ish views or accident/jam notifications, user interface is awful and totally unintuitive (worse than video on demand from your local cable company, e.g.), but I've learned it and get great turn-by-turn visual and voice prompts - and if I'm going somewhere that wasn't built when my old DVD (not a CD) was burned, I just put in an address that's close.

However, checking the updates, sheesh! The prices are worse than you said - over $100 for my car. Ridiculous.

Here is a comparison between CarPlay and Android Auto Support :

Image

So 29 for Carplay and 28 for Android Auto, for the moment.

Carplay is winning, to only because of the number of brands, but because more auto groups are supporting Carplay

Android doesn't have support from BMW group (Mini, BMW, Rolls Royce), the Peugeot-Citroen group (those), Geely (Volvo) and Toyota (the largest auto mfgr by 2012)

haha so much for the argument on here that 'luxury brands' only will use the Apple system and the cheaper ones will use Android.

Oh, and BTW, Lada already announced CarPlay support. Argument 140% dismissed.

From what I read, it seems like the manufacturers who support both are going to be "platform agnostic," and it won't matter whether you're on iOS or Android (and that if you use neither in the car, your car will do whatever car sound and/or nav systems already do).

Still, I've read about 6 articles on all this and haven't seen it stated one way or the other.

So do we know if this (being able to evoke either UI when connected) is true or not for sure...??

Is VW looking into using carplay ?

Fingers crossed with Audi on board the entire Volkswagen group will be on board, you'd think it'd be done the way the Chrysler deal was, so hopefully soon Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT, Skoda and VW will all be on board as part of one deal.

Buy a new car every two years because your car is no longer compatible with the latest IOS build

Pois queria :D

Well, considering Alfa's failure on releasing new models, I strongly doubt they will make old cars compatible. The thing about UConnect is it is avaiable across all the Fiat-Chrysler model range, so you may be lucky ;)
