Is VW looking into using carplay ?

I came on here to ask precisely that, too. We've got a 2014 Golf GTI courtesy car at the moment and I really, really want one. The stock infotainment system is actually really good, but I'd rather it integrate even better with my iPhone.

What about Toyota ? There was an underground announcement that they would be using it... but then they removed the timeframe they fixed themselves.

I can't wait until car manufacturers stop their half-assed interfaces with a clear lack of designers, time and knowledge of these technologies. Even if it's brand new, Apple has put more than 15 years of software technologies behind CarPlay. Things like UIKit Foundation, CoreAnimation, CoreGraphics, etc. Only these kind of solutions are sustainable and are worth money IMO.

This takes away their "It's got the Nav" $2500 option package for 4 year old maps in a low res GPS. I bet they're pissed.

Why would they be pissed? Now they can offer the $4000 "It's got the Carplay" option package on top of that.

Mazda 5
You can't get manual transmission AND bluetooth. The stick shift won out.

My Mazda 3 has both.

I walked in to a Subaru. Tried a Crosstrek. Wouldn't give me leather and Nav with the stick. I walked out.

Same for Mazda.

Ive visited Nissan twice, they never have stick available to drive.

I'm about convinced no one wants to sell me a car. My longest gap without a new car.

When I bought my 2005 Acura. The only way to get sunroof/leather/Bose amp/210hp engine... Was with the stick... As it should be. They've since killed their hatchback with fold flat seats, and all their offerings are drearily boring.

Mini Countryman can get the full shabang. But, its just a little too awkward.

The Jetta Sportwagen. Can get fully loaded TDI with stick. Tempting, not priced well, still someday need to go give one a spin.

Hmm...when CarPlay was announced I saw all this faux outrage from people (who should know better) that their choice of car would be dependent on what phone OS they use and how awful it was that CarPlay wasn't platform neutral. Then Android Auto is announced working basically the same way as CarPlay does and nary a peep from anyone...

"We" were too busy griping about how Google/Android has copied Apple once again.

Then, mockups 53-58 of iPhone 6 threads were posted and we lost interest in the auto OS subject.

We've made a similar decision to wait till the first generation is out. Dealers can't even get the info on carplay from US or EU headquarters whether it will be on car x or y ... which production starts two months from now for the '15 model.

Given that it is a bit of a game changer and if you hold onto your car from new till it is not economical to repair any more, then, I figure it is better to wait.

I'm also still curious what will happen when little CarPlay Protocol/Firmware/OS 1.0 goes not only from 1.0 to 1.1 etc but to 2.0 or 3.0. Is the head unit user upgradeable and future proof from the get-go? ... or?

As far as I know, Carplay will update via your iDevice. Carplay and Android Auto are basically doing a handoff.

Do we really need cars tied to specific phone platforms?

We could mount some really big wheels onto our iPhones.

....but seriously, no we don't and with SAMSUNG and Google doing the same, it's like the BETAMAX war.

Or each car platform gets it's own button like stations.

Me too.

I am sure there will be plenty of "noise" when it is released. Didn't see one on their website but do you know if Pioneer has a "mailing list" you can sign up for to be notified when it is available?

I don't know, but I've looked for it on there site, didn't see it

If I were a car manufacturer, I wouldn't want to exclude iOS users, who are among the most affluent potential customers.

In fact it would be idiot for a car maker to offer "Android only" just as it would be lunatic for them to offer "iOS only".
...

I could see Tata Motors making an Android only car. Seems like a good fit.

Here is a comparison between CarPlay and Android Auto Support :

Image

So 29 for Carplay and 28 for Android Auto, for the moment.

The DS logo on the left... Thats just a range of cars made by Citroen... DS3, DS4 and DS5.
Not a whole other car manufacturer...

So... 28/28...?

I just bought a new Jeep Cherokee...Jeep had better offer an upgrade for current owners of Uconnect.

I just purchased a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit back in April. I'm a tech junky so I had to go with their best model that had all the bells and whistles. I wouldn't be surprised if they were able to program an update into the vehicle's current computer system to make CarPlay work on the current models that have the fully loaded nav/tech options. At least I hope so...

Out of all the possible options out there, I really feel that the Apple CarPlay will be the killer system to have. This is what Apple is best at doing. Integrating every day life things into their iOS system and using it through your iPhone/iPad while keeping it extremely simple (most of the time).

I look forward to the days that I will be able to go to the App Store, download a free CarPlay app, and then make an in app purchase for the vehicle that I want to use with it. :p

"Are you sure you want to purchase this 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee for use with your CarPlay app?"

lol

No Ferrari for Android users, anyway, 2015 is too far away. Apple announced this tech 2 year in advance?

That was why I lol'd :(

Car manufacturers arent known to do anything out of the goodness of their hearts, to support their customers.

They are still maintaining that it will be supported by the end of the year. There is no reason that infotainment systems can't have the same kind of update system as mobile devices...at least Apple mobile devices...run an update and get an entirely new UI with all kinds of cool features.

I'm getting a new car in about a year. Carplay will definitely be something I'm looking for in the new car.
