still tied to old 1960's cable TV business model sorry HBO and these other cable TV specialty channels have to make direct web access to their content.
You have to make it easier and cheaper to subscribe rather that download a pirated movie/show.
$80 -$100 /mth for a cable subscription to 90% of the content that is useless.
Look at the Netfilx business model for example - cheap - easy to use on any device.

Waste of time

Well that was uninspiring as usual in the UK: Sky News. Sometimes I just despair at Apple's inability to provide content for the AppleTV to customers in the UK who pay considerably more for the device than customers in the US.
All those years after introducing ATV2 and the only really useful content we have in the UK is Netflix; PATHETIC!

Well.... for some of us who are slightly soccer crazed, the addition of Sky is very timely, as Fox Soccer Channel is going bye bye mid August.

The soccer-based talk shows on FSC were usually absolute crap. NBC is getting the EPL and will provide more extensive coverage than even those in England get. Hopefully their talk shows will be better than those on FSC. Also, Fox Sports 1 will continue to have the Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup most likely, not to mention the World Cup.

But I do enjoy Sky Sports on FSC for decent football coverage.

Bring flixster or VUDU; many of us have cut the cable and don't care about more cable apps that need cable subscriptions and SONY and WB don't care to give us iTunes DC of movies anymore.

Yah. "cable everywhere" is the last gasp of a dying business model.

----------

Someone needs to tell HBO and ESPN that cable is dead.

The shameful thing is, its piss easy to get working. I got it working on an old Humax freeview box a while back, the controller mapping via a javascript inject file is all that has to be done, and even then all you're doing is mapping up,down, left, right to their keyboard counterparts, and 'menu' to 'backspace' and then 'play' to 'enter'.

It's sad how simple it is, its already h.245 compatible, the iPlayer streams are the exact resolution needed, and there is no flash to get in the way of things as the BBC already made it fully compatible with any set top box running a very simple browser.

Wouldn't everybody just stop paying their TV license fee if the iPlayer were available on a set top box such as the Apple TV? The beeb needs revenue...

This is actually huge news. Other than Amazon Prime, Apple now finally has all the biggest TV apps and some extras. Apple TV is again a formidable product.

That being said, personally I would love to have the Xfinity app native to Apple TV, but there is little more folks could be dying for.

Now all we need is "Auntie"

Please :apple:, get round to having the BBC iPlayer on :apple:TV, and how about the BBC News Channel too?

Free to UK TV Licence payers, and a "price it aggressively, go for volume" subscription to the rest of the world.:D

Why is that? What does Apple TV have that Roku doesn't. Roku's contest is 10X more than Apple TV, is faster and easier to use. I have both also but rarely touch my Apple TV because it's lack of content and weak controller. Yes I can use my iphone, but I can also use my iphone to control the Roku Box.
iTunes Media (DRM). Besides that I like the interface better.

Sky News UK live feed looks much worse than the digital TV broadcasts, which already looks bad.

What is the point in that? I was expecting 1080p.

The news ticker along the bottom is jerky and the picture is rubbish.

BBC iPlayer STILL missing which is much more needed than SKY NEWS.

Just want to speak up and say I don't have this problem. The news ticker is smooth and normal, and the picture is fine. It might not be 1080p (It's probably not), but streaming on the AppleTV box seems just the same as watching a cable signal. Perhaps it's your internet connection?

This is a replay of the music download arguments.

Except it is a hell of a lot more expensive to produce an episode of television than it is to cut a music track.

Count me in with the other guy ... you can point to iTunes downloads, but to think that those could actually pay for an episode of television to be produced at current rates is silly.

Someone needs to tell HBO and ESPN that cable is dead.

Not as long as they continue to rake in the money. The model "changing" needs to actually impact the top players before they take notice.

Netflix producing a couple TV shows does not a changed dynamic make.

Thanks Charter for blocking my access on the AppleTV which makes ZERO sense as it works on iOS and the Xbox.

I like the iPlayer idea, the BBC News Channel is a waste of money as it is.

What?

Why and how Charter would block your access to AppleTV?

Apparently Charter supports using HBO Go from every device BUT the AppleTV. If you attempt to go to the hbogo.com/activate page and select Apple TV, thats the page you get. I even went to another device page, entered the Apple TV code, and was told "You provider does not support this device."

HBOGO for Apple TV isn't supported by DirecTV either. So much for hoping I would be able to stop having to watch it on my Xbox 360.
