Research firms [url="http://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/2604616"]Gartner
and IDC today released their preliminary calculations of PC shipments for the third quarter of 2013, finding that worldwide shipments fell by roughly 8% over the year-ago quarter,
......

Me thinks that these "analists" have to go back to school. For me 16,121 is not 8% less than 15,582.

Otherwise they'll have to explain better how they arrive that the 8% since the figures in the charts makes no sense. Wafflers!

Hmmmm, I cant think of any company that wouldn't take that line graph, yeah if you want to drill down and argue periods (for some reason?) but that trend line is something to envy in a deteriorating market.

It is interesting to realize, if tablets are taking over from PCs, just how little the average consumer actually does with a laptop/desktop.

My thoughts too. I am far from a power user. If I could only have one item it would definitely be my Mac. Love the iDevices but need a computer even for my simple tasks.

this trend will continue

That trend line shows how absolutely clueless tech financial writers are, IMHO. That trend line is killer and you can bet its the only thing Apple cares about, its non value added to discuss qtr vs qtr events when model roll outs and seasonality cause near term variabilities.

Thanks for that chart, amazing!

Should have updated the MacBook Pros, iMac, and Mac mini at WWDC.

Mac sales falter in the PC market when they haven't done any update to their more budget friendly laptops in over a year. Why is this a surprise or considered news? In fact, I disagree with headline in the fact that they seem to be implying that it's because of the iPad.

The drop was due to them not updating their laptops...

I know I was willing to buy a rMBP back in June but yet they're still not here.

People want the best and newest, they don't want to buy a cMBP when the retina is sitting right there and they can't afford the retina. They also think to themselves it would be nice to have a DVD drive and for all of the above reasons were choosing PCs. If the rMBPs are a reasonable price by next back to school I would guess there will be a rebound

Not really a surprise considering college is an expensive time and adding cutting back on electronics would be a logical choice for many.

Especially when many applications work on windows only (engineering applications etc.) - MS Office is still very much considered a Windows application despite being available on Mac. Yes windows is on Mac but why pay extra will be some people's thinking.

Apple doesn't have a laptop in the budget range and will continue to lag in this area until it decides to go that route.

This is what happens when you neglect your computers, it's no fault to the ipad.

Every single one of you are wrong.

HP and Dell are heavily sold on QVC virtually every week along with the Big Box stores so they will always have the upper hand. QVC has so many lemmings stupid enough to buy those crap HP and Dells and QVC knows how to reel them in.
Apple's MacBooks have been on QVC but possibly once every 6 or so months.

The number of products shipped means nothing. I want to know how many products were sold. Microsoft shipped a lot of Surface tablets last quarter, for example, but they also had to write off almost a billion in losses. If Apple lost a penny Wall Street would FREAK!

Wish Apple did a more up to date budget mac. Where I work we have 20 laptops and for the peice of one Mac you can get 4-5 HP laptops.

Students may bring their laptop to some classes, but please don't believe the commercials/advertising that they are actively using them for notetaking and such.

I'm surprised people still write or type. These days, all you have to do is bring your preferred computing device into class, prop it up, aim it, then set it to record. There you go. Instant notes.

And they do that every year, the only thing that changes was that they were more successful, or Apple was less successful. Perhaps because their laptops are all so outdated and overpriced. Especially for the college crowd that very much believes in sharing DVD's still.

Relieved the pro-line isn't being dropped, concerned about the pricing and performance/upgradability of the new "Mac Pro".

Additionally, bring back more display sizes as before instead of one 27" LED LCD iMac panel (extend the cables too!)

Question, what campus statement does having a Apple product instead of a PC / Android device? There any class or academic tract distinction?

My guess is that October 22nd event featuring the iPad has the new Mac Pro and it's pricing as the "One more thing ..." towards the end of it.

I still say we'll see an entry level Mac Pro system for $1999 with the average price around $2750.

Price I won't argue about but being outdated? By who's standards? Be real about it, the only people that know anything about Retina, CPU's GPU's, Fusion Drives or even SSD's are techies and geeks and they don't represent even 10% of Apple's customer base. Most people just go into the store and buy what's available.
Try and keep in mind what you're not well-versed in or don't keep up with. Some people are culinary geniuses and will go into a kitchenwares store and pick up what they think is the best blender or cookware. A week later everything they just bought was upgraded to a new model. It happens to everyone.

Never underestimate the American middle class to sacrifice their personal time and welfare to upkeep a cheap product line to avoid paying less up front.

Sad... IMO it has to do with the delay of the latest laptops. Not just that but the competition is actually creating really great products for Windows. Things like high resolution screens, latest tech, and good designs.

In top of that, some buyers want some kind of upgradability in their laptops. Preventing the customer from upgrading Ram and HDD/SSD is a mistake IMO. I'm sure Apple could find a way to provide upgradability without affecting the laptop design much.

Hope that Apple has made some nice changes in their Retina laptops.

I logged in to post the same comment....most vendors (except Apple) fudge their numbers by counting sales "into the channel" - in other words not really sold. Thus, Microsoft could quote those huge shipment numbers and then took a $900M write-off because most of their RT's got shipped back.

Reasons for this

Most students don't have 1k to drop on a laptop.
Most students don't need anymore than the very minimum (ram, hdd, cpu) so they can get away with a cheap 300-400 laptop that will do everything they need.
The world works with Microsoft (while students could use apple programs that fill the need of office its just easier to use what all their classrooms use).

Unless you are hipster/rich/special needs for a mac then mac laptop doesn't make sense sorry.

So when Apple talks about sales of iPad and iPhones, it is pointless too?

Also, they didn't write off losses. A write down is not about losses.

Your company buys laptops for $200 to $250 each? I am glad I don't have to use that kind of crap, and I am glad Apple doesn't sell it.

Yes we are holding on Apple purchases waiting for new models. FINALLY we are buying iMacs. We would really love to get MBPs but won't buy old ones.

I'm so glad Apple put all their resources into lacquered machined polished polycarbonate.

something tells me that, as the most profitable PC maker in the biz, apple knows more about its business than you do. just a hunch.

This is what happens when you neglect your computers, it's no fault to the ipad.

people who track annual refreshes to rMBP lines, chipsets, read this site, etc, are tech enthusiasts -- not normal consumers. apple's products are largely geared for normal consumers. my coworker has no idea what Haswell is, he just knew he wanted the new spiffy MBP. guess that was a year ago (?) but its still new to him.

This is not a comparison of equals. When we consider that Apple sells only high end computers and view this against sales of $500 PCs, it's not a fair or meaningful comparison. Price adjusted, Apple is still stomping any close competitor in the PC market. Not everyone can afford a $3k MacBook Pro these days and with PCs being given away, their numbers are hardly surprising. Note: I did not say, "This is not comparing Apples to apples". :D
