Lol.

That is it? Given all the number of huge things that Apple can do with the iPhone that you can't do with an Android device.. I will stick by my statement.

Why would anyone buy an Android phone if they had a choice?

I don't mind the commercial and i enjoy my iphone. And i see some of the fandroids have come out because now this is yet another thing to complain about

I think some people spend more time on this board complaining than actually using their phone. It's a damn commercial people!

I could post many reasons why , several people in this thread already have. You will ignore what these people say because your a massive Apple fanboy and wont listen.

Man, each year Apple does something that just grinds my gears. I think my next PC purchase will be a Windows PC just because Apple's arrogance is becoming sickening.

I'm with you. Sometimes I wish my line of work wasn't so dominated by macs.

Don't like the ads at all.....very self satisfied and embarrassing. Wouldn't surprise me if they get pulled quite quickly judging by the reaction & comments on this thread.

You honestly think apple will base it's marketing on a thread on a message board that has some trolls and fandroids in it?

I've already addressed this many times.

I chose to get the EVO and in the process gave up my iPhone because I wanted bigger screen, faster processor, 4G, unlimited data plan, wireless tethering, HDMI out was big (I give presentations using my phone every now and than it works great!), and the ability to customize my look and feel.

When everyone else copies one product and fails to deliver everything it delivers they can't by any definition be better.

Best thing about Android, I can make it look like what I want. Be it an iPhone, a Symbian, PalmOS, whatever. I can get any of those experiences. iPhone can't do that. I would rather have a jack of all trades personally.

I like the free turn by turn sat nav too.

Yeah not really. I did have an iPhone and I switched.

I switched because I was tired of having everything so restrictive that I had to search crazy hacker sites to get silly named jailbreaking apps like redsnow and greenrain.

I switched because iTunes wiped my iPhone out not once but twice, driving me completely bonkers.

I switched because I like widgets, how they work, and what they bring to the experience.

I know this will probably piss alot of people off, but this commercial just comes off too snooty for my tastes. In truth it wreaks of desperation on the part of Apple, who knows that they're beginning to lose the mobile phone war just like they lost the pc wars in the 80's.

The problem isn't that they put out a bad product, the problem is that they want to control every single aspect of it, and don't take outside developer input. Just look at all of the features that had to be introduced by jailbreaking. Jobs is reliving the 80's all over again, and his controlling nature will see iPhone's market share continue to dwindle.

So no iPhone envy here just someone who sees through the curtain and knows Jobs isn't the great and powerful anything, just a control freak with a big ego.

Poorly done

The tag line aside, which I don't particularly care for, these ads are all false, or at least grossly misleading.

1. Music player - most Android phones have a perfectly competent music player. Android phones can also sync to iTunes very easily. I actually use iSyncr and sync wirelessly over WiFi, something the iPhone cannot do. My particular music player (EVO/ HTC Sense) is very comparable to iTunes, without the online market (which I doubt I would ever use), or I could buy music from other online stores like Amazon. If I want different music on the go, I'd probably use Pandora, instead.

2. Delta app - Android marketplace has it. I just checked. I can't vouch for the functions within, but they have an app. I found it just a fast as in the iPhone commercial, too.

3. I'm not sure what the Starbucks ad showed. If it's a membership card, Android has a comparable app. Actually, it has a superior app because it has an associated widget. If it's something else, I can't tell. Edit: Also found a dedicated Coffee Card app that seems more similar to what was shown in the commercial. Still not unqiue to iPhone.

4. iBooks - Many have stated that both Kindle and nook apps are available on Android phones. There's also Aldiko, which is more open.

All in all, the commercials don't just have a poor tone. They are wrong in every case.

For full disclosure, I have an EVO 4G, iPad2 (stood in line like a good Apple buyer), MacBook Air, ASUS laptop (Win7), two self-built Win7 desktops, and bought iPod Touches for my kids for Christmas this year. I went from my iPhone 3GS to my EVO 4G because of service availability. I missed the iPhone for the first 6 months. I have now more functionality and derive better workflow/use from the EVO than I ever did from the iPhone. Not to mention my truly unlimited 4G data and tethering for the better part of a year, while Apple/AT&T were still asleep on the issue. If the iPhone ever comes to Sprint, I will have a tough choice to make, since I am now tied into alot of the Apple ecosystem (iPad, MBA, MobileMe).

And there are a great deal many people who bought iPhones because they are "cool" and and if you don't have one you can't hang with the "in" crowd and look snazzy in your black turtleneck sweater. I know several people who bought them for this very reason, when in fact it was the worst phone for them to get because AT&T in our area sucks.

I personally have more respect for the people who waited for a decent Android phone to come around that worked well in their reception area, so you know, they could actually use it as a PHONE, instead of jumping on the iPhone bandwagon even if as a phone it sucked because "everyone else had one".

Yes, what you say is also true. But not everyone had problems with AT&T even though the media makes it seem like that. Also, that is what happens when someone makes a really good product. Granted the phone part of it, which of course is the main aspect, may have had issues with service for some, but the overall device with its features and user experience are still arguably matched by none. That will always result in people wanting it and it becoming trendy which I see nothing wrong with. Of course intelligent people will do some homework and not blindly follow the crowds, but that doesn't mean they won't come to the same overall conclusion and be excited about the product as well!

It *is* a different company....

These are the types of ads that got me into macs years ago. Almost seems like a different company:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oitVQkAZ6JA

Apple *is* a very different company from those days. The focus on Igadgets, the shift to commodity parts assembled by overseas contract builders, the change to marketing based on "designer label" cachet rather than product draw, and a lot of other things.

Apple is trying so hard to be "cool", that they're no longer "cool".

All in all, the commercials don't just have a poor tone. They are wrong in every case.

Does this surprise you, coming from the company that ran the "wrong" series of "PC vs MAC" ads?

Thought they were tasteless and stupid. Wish they wouldn't do ads like that, makes me embarrassed to be an apple fan...

Not really, but I think they're playing a different game this time around. For me, the Mac vs. PC ads were sometimes annoying, sometimes cute, but always seemed to have at least a kernal of truth to them. Sure, if you dug down, you could always argue the points weren't always technically 100% correct, but they were what they were.

IMO, these ads move a different level, one of completely misrepresenting the abilities of Apple's competitors. The fact is, that (the higher end) Android phones can do everything shown in the ads, or at least some reasonable version of them.

Maybe it's not too different. It's a matter of degrees, and I think these have crossed a line of being responsible and truthful in advertising.

For what it's worth, a lot of the Mac vs. PC ads annoyed me, too, but they seemed to have more valid targets regarding the differences in the Win vs. Mac experience.

The "bit of truth" with the MAC vs PC ads, though, often was true in regards to Windows 95 or Windows 98 - but not so much for XP, Vista or Windows 7.

Maybe Apple is playing the same game here - comparing Iphone to older Android phones - and ignoring the current ones.

So I suppose you can't buy books through Amazon with the - wait for it - Kindle App for iOS?!?
:eek::rolleyes:

Think before you write, please.
The Kindle bookstore has the same publishers on it as the iBookstore, maybe more. So the person you replied to is correct, there is no advantage to being able to buy books on the iPad/iPhone verses the Kindle, you simply have two different places to buy the same books.

Oh for crying out loud...

Just because parts of the shell are similar or perhaps even stronger does not mean the product is comparable in any real way.
<snip>
Flip things around and what major points do these other devices have that the iPhone does not have? It just doesn't match up when you compare massive advantages.

So even though there are products out there with:
  • Free turn-by-turn navigation
  • Flash (that's right, 'the whole internet')
  • A much more customisable user interface
  • Good and bigger touchscreens
  • App stores which contain most if not all of the most popular apps that are available for the iPhone, as well as improved apps from Google
  • Apps that aren't strictly controlled by Apple (I accept this is a double-edged sword)
They're not comparable to the iPhone 'in any real way'? Put down the crack pipe. In a lot of ways they are better. Maybe that's why so many people are buying them. It's a subjective judgment. Some people will want an iPhone or an Android phone, others won't. You and others in this thread have been denigrating those who make a different choice than you by suggesting they're poor or stupid. You suck.

I'm not certain of the exact point I got irritated by the rampant fanboyism here but I think it was when people started being rude about others because of their mobile phone choices.

So, Android doesn't have an app store, way to sync to a computer, or have things like kindle app? Pretty sure it does. The closed mindedness of the many MR users never fail to astound me.

Why is it so hard for some people to accept that not all iPhone users are "in love" with their iPhones ?

I am an iPhone user, yet I can see the value in Android, BlackBerry, WebOS and other devices and platforms. Because I sometimes have to point out the weaknesses of the iPhone to some more passionate posters doesn't mean I'm a troll or "fandroid". I'm still very much an iPhone user.

So, Android doesn't have an app store, way to sync to a computer, or have things like kindle app? Pretty sure it does. The closed mindedness of the many MR users never fail to astound me.

Not to mention Android made their app store web accessible with "push to device" functionality. So I don't need to squint at my screen to purchase and download apps when away from my main computer. Apple needs to copy that.

You and others in this thread have been denigrating those who make a different choice than you by suggesting they're poor or stupid. You suck.

These ads are having an effect faster. Not only are the ads snobby, but it's already reflecting in some of MR poster's attitude. "Hey, if I didn't have this iPhone... I wouldn't have an iPhone *spits on everything else*".

A proof Apple marketing does work.

Meh, for me I'm looking for a Windows Phone 7 device but due to it not being available on the carrier I use I really have no other choice but to go for an iPhone. I don't blame Microsoft but it doesn't help their market share if Microsoft is unwilling to put pressure on phone vendors to sell directly to customers so then I can use my SIM inside it (I need a vendor that supports 850/2100 UMTS, and no I'm not going to parallel import a locked down/castrated SIM-lock free one from AT&T).

They remind me of the Mac vs PC adverts. Pretty immature and stupid arguments. I like my iPhone and I prefer it to any android phone but this ad is just a bit childish and ignoring the fact that Android itself has some key features that the iPhone does not have at this time. If the iPhone was well and truly dominating the market (as it was a few years ago before there was any real rival OS) then I'd understand but fact is Android is a pretty good competitor.

Finally watched these.

I find this thread hilarious. I was expecting some snotty, whiny voice complaining about Android, based on this thread. These ads are nothing. That voice isn't smug or pretentious as said dozens of times here. The ads are not very intelligent or memorable, and the iBooks ad is fairly lame as that store is hardly the best around, but I don't see the attitude at all.

You people need to get a grip. If this is pretentious, then that guy I saw driving a Jetta the other day must be a Harvard prof in his fancy car.
