Exactly this. These commercials are very smug, pretentious, and arrogant.

So what.

Apple is set to sell an absolutely sick amount of these devices next quarter. And this is a closed, proprietary platform that isn't exactly inexpensive to get into. At most, two phones (but really only one) on a limited number of carriers. And Apple leads in all the areas that matter.

Whatever Apple is doing, marketing/advertising included, it's working.

You can be as smug as you like when you're the best. Fair play by Apple. They've got psychological warfare down to a science.

I want an apple tv…

No 3G support for facetime ruins it for me. It is just a novelty if it can only be used with a wifi connection. This ad fails to make not of that.

When I add a person to my contacts and I specify that they have an iPhone, it should put a small "video" icon next to their name on my contact list so that I immediately know that they have an i-device. I have more than 200 names on my contact list and I always forget who I can and cannot Facetime with. This is a glaring omission that Apple made in the way the software is coded. I never use Facetime for this reason. I just can't remember which of my friends have iPhone and which don't.

Fix this and I'm sure many more people will start using Facetime. You better fix it quick because Facebook is gunning for you.

How about adding a suffix to the names of those who have FaceTime? Howard Jones-F. Or putting them in all caps?

Wow - extremely misleading advertising.
You can only send music via airplay if you have an airport express connected to speakers or a compatible stereo system - both of which are expensive and which isn't mentioned at all.
Want to send your photo's or watch a movie from your iPhone on TV?
Then you'll need an Apple TV for that - something else that isn't cheap and isn't mentioned.
I have 2 airport express in my home and an Apple TV and it works just great, but I think this iPhone ad is VERY misleading as it would suggest that all this is possible just via the iPhone itself - which it isn't.
Shame on you Apple! :(

Apple TV isn't cheap? Are you serious? For what you get for under $100, they are practically giving them away.

Although it is 100% completely fair for Apple to make ads that seem "smug" and "pretentious"... it's still smug and pretentious to do so! Does marketing like this work, at least for some people? Sure. Is it still douche-bag marketing? Yup. And it only lends support to the notion that Apple is an elitist company. Which in many ways they are. This kind of marketing does work in many cases, but it will also backfire (as evidenced by the diverse attitudes shared in this thread). It's a snobby ad. Most of Apple's marketing is pretty decent... but this campaign... definitely carries a whif of douche-baggery with it...!

Very odd choice for Apple to base their ads around two features where they've completely dropped the ball.

Facetime is a mess, conceptually how dialing is supposed to work across devices just hasn’t been properly figured out, a proprietry protocol (that Steve lied being properietry) that only works on cripplingly small amount of devices and only works in your own house. Skype is wiping the floor with it.

Airplay is rapidly turning into Apple's Google TV. They just seemed to assume if they built it all the networks and web video would jump straight on. Instead they've looked at the value chain and the complete lack of security and told them to bugger off, so Apple are left trying to make it opt out in iOS5 in a desperate hope of getting more content hoping no one will notice.

Both are a mess. Adverts should focus on things that *just work*.

If you don't have an iPhone, you don't have facetime.BUT you have Skype. A far superior app, higher quality, more features, and it works on any device. But whatever, hardcore Apple fans still believe FaceTime is better somehow..

funny! I actually did think for a second you were being serious..Skype and high quality haha.. "Can you see me?" "Yep yep, no, you've gone again..."

Does anyone use Airplay? If so, in what situation?

I do, Daily.

I have my mac upstairs with an external firewire drive storing a huge library of music and video which can be streamed to an apple TV downstairs.

I also have an airport express hooked up to an ion tailgater in the summer house, allowing my to come in from work while listening to music on my phone and continue it on either the sound system hooked up to the apple TV or the speaker in the summer house.

When we have parties in the garden the music is supplied from the mac back in the house to the summer house via iTunes DJ. Allowing guests to use either their phones, ipods or the iPad with the speaker to vote up songs in the playlist.

I also prefer to use youtube on the iPad (website as its better than the app) and airplay it to the apple tv rather than use the built in youtube option with the annoying on screen remote keyboard)

That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I'm still pissed that I can't do airplay or any of the iOS4.3 features because apple still hasn't released 4.3 for the Verizon iPhone... i feel like the BigRed step child... maybe iOS5 will finally give me airplay...

Airplay is fantastic. Come home. iphone/airplay.. Boom! 400watts per channel. Love it! I'm sure you have a whole load of reasons why Apple doesnt work, but reality's far better.

Does anyone use Airplay? If so, in what situation?

I use it all the time. Music and videos to Apple TV 2 and music to the Airport Express in my bathroom. The Air Video app for iOS is awesome. The server runs on my computer and live-converts the avi/mkv movies on my Time Capsule, then sends it to my iPhone which then sends it to Apple TV 2 via AirPlay, all seamlessly and wirelessly. It sounds complicated but it's really really simple.

Great ads showcasing some great features that Apple has made really easy to use.

Lack of ATV in the ad aside (though I noted the disclaimer in tiny print at the end), I'm honestly surprised they'd advertise a feature you can't even get on Verizon yet. That's just asking to annoy customers unnecessarily.

Unless it's a good sign meaning the update is imminent...

Having switched from AT&T 3GS I do miss it on the iPhone 4. One example - continuing a podcast that I was listening to on the way home.

Actually no. FaceTime tends to be better quality than Skype. That is the one possible reason for Apple to be hesitant to allow 3G because of lag making the thing unusable, and/or massive bandwidth munching. They do need to work SOMETHING out for 3G though.

Snip

Agreed, having just used both over wifi, I prefer FT for the interface and a better quality video. This was iPhone to iPhone. But Skype will work over 3G so i use both.

I could not disagree more. AirPlay for one is amazing, not just now but for what it signals for where we are going. In many ways the iPhone and iPad are now consoles for your TV. If you think how this can expand into other applications on your TV it has the potential to be huge. When you look at Apple products, you need to see them as signposts about where they see the technology is likely to take us.

For now, I love being able to throw up a video or slideshow from my iPad to the TV, or songs from my iPhone onto my home stereo with hardly any effort at all.:)

Umm, pick up any teen magazine, any fashion magazine. Marketing is all about being arrogant, making a point and being all up in your face. Welcome to 21st century consumerism.

You're absolutely right. I still say keep it classy Apple.

Can you play a video made from your iPhone directly to the AppleTV? I don't have this option. Is it just me?
