Apple's trying too hard with Siri. I got my 4S four months ago and used Siri the first couple of weeks before turning it off. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't, often enough for me to turn it off. Maybe it will work better with iOS 6 and the next iPhone when they bring it out of beta and rename it to a name which begins with an "i".

In some ways it's sad that the benefits being advertised are so meaningless in the scheme of things. They're advertising assisted living, the type you see in WALL-E. The only reason it's not more sad is that this form of assistance isn't terribly convenient and has very limited use right now. People have to force these situations a bit where it's useful, especially the ones shown on TV. A reminder to clean a dirty room?

In some ways it reflects where people are at. I work at a customer service, tech support job, and I am surprised at the number of people who need support for lifestyle gadgets and who call from their cars. And it's not urgent--they're calling from the device itself they need help with, so it can make calls. It may be a woman screaming that an in app purchase on her phone isn't working and she's trying to troubleshoot it with me over the phone while she's driving and she yells at her kids to be quiet. Because her kids are such an interruption to the task at hand: figuring out where her in app purchase of something like Fart Game went, while hurtling a car at 70 mph.

Technology was always evolving to make work easier for us. Word processing changed how we write, and desktop publishing, WWW, digital video editing, all self evident.

But what are we doing now? A digital buddy? Is that what we need?

I'm not saying Siri is a bad idea altogether. But it would be nice to see how it helps people lead a better life and have more time for their families as a result. Instead it shows people becoming more involved with technology: developing a relationship with their phones. And a very sad relationship at that! Standing around when you can see it's raining and asking your phone if it is raining? That's one of the saddest things I can think of. You could make an independent, slice-of-life film movie with a scene where a depressed girl is staring out into the rain and out of sheer boredom asks her phone if it's raining. It would actually be a great scene—for a dark movie.

And while I think Siri could be something useful, I don't think it seems like a revolutionary feature or terribly different from what already existed, I don't see how it's the main feature of the iPhone right now, and I don't know that it needs to be implemented as a persona. Why couldn't it just be a nondescript way of interacting with your phone? I mean when they invented the mouse they didn't say it was your personal scepter that would bow to your every wish. If this is to be a legitimate new interface paradigm, why not just make it part of the phone, why separate is as this "person"?

Finally, if you'll indulge me once more, does anyone else find the aesthetic appeal annoying of these ads and Siri? The beeping isn't particularly pleasant. Siri's voice sounds like a dated robot technology voice. And then of course the interactions themselves are forced, meaningless, and kind of sad.

I know much else wasn't new with the iPhone 4S, but why not advertise in an iPhone vs Android way they did with Mac vs PC, show why the iPhone is better for the more fundamental reasons, like app store garden walls and ensuring a consistent experience, the fact that the iPhone 3GS can run 5.1--those are the bigger differentiators.

The perfect Apple ad, or ad from any company, would go something like this:

What a refreshing comment :) I couldn't really express where these adds, or siri in general went wrong, and you did it. And the Costner add is imho indeed the message that Apple should be bringing, but then again, I'm afraid the "think different" attitude is sadly all but gone from Apple, and I'm starting to have some trouble believing Apple's messages lately.

Nicely written !

I still think it would be weird to talk to my phone. Maybe I'm just old school, IDK. I'd definitely give it a try when I update.

People probably said the same thing about talking on the phone: "Call me old fashioned, but I'd rather talk to people face-to-face."

In a decade, people will be talking to their phones, TVs, microwave oven...etc, and it'll seem normal.

I agree, If it can simplify the use of the phone that's all that matters really. I think I would get used to it.

It isn't even working in Denmark yet. I bet it won't work with the next iPhone either, meh :( Cheesy bringing top celebs in too. Double meh!

It's not really uncharacteristic of Apple. I mean all those Think Different posters/adverts come to mind, product placement with celebs/iconic figures.

Yeah you might be right. It's just for people outside the US some of the other actors has been less known than for instance Samuel Jackson. I love Apple, not only for their products, but for what they are compared to other big companies like them, I just hope they're not going in a different direction of what Steve would have done :) But yeah, you're probably right. They've done it before.

I would prefer to see Siri not shipping at all on phones in Europe. Works poorly at best with various accents and has little functionality when it does. I'd bet 10% never use it here after first months with their new 3GS. Bring it back apple, if or when you get it usable

Great, Steve Jobs dies and Apple loses its taste buds.

These commercials are interesting but too cheap. Apple commercials have always been about in touch with the humanism of their products, not the latest fad or the popular trend.

Celebrity endorsements I feel like are a bit slap in the face of Apple marketing. And these commercials lack that Apple "charm"

useless toy that takes longer than just doing the task by yourself.

also it would never understand them the way they talk

will it ever leave beta stage? i havent used it since i got it on christmas. i actually forgot i had Siri xD

You're right - but that doesn't mean that this will be an improvement. Instead of talking to our fellow LIVING beings, we will spend more time talking to and using machines. That sure will increase the quality of our lives significantly. Or did I just confuse quality with isolation? Probably.

Except for that little Garageband for iPad commercial they made a couple of weeks ago, all Apple ads show solitary people whose only social interaction is their conversation with an electronic gadget. The world they advertise is a lonely place for pathetic existences.

But still, it's almost ironic that the feature they advertise the most is the ability of the user to talk WITH the phone, not over it. Maybe they found out that most iPhone users don't have anyone else to talk to, so they gave them something to have a conversation with.

Sorry, but this whole development is headed in the wrong direction. Not only in Apple land, but also in Google territory when I see their Project Glass stuff.
Enjoy your Matrix world, but I prefer to stay out of your digital prisons.

I use Siri probably 6-10 times a day. Sometimes a bit more.

It's certainly much faster than navigating and tapping buttons.

There are a lot of shortcuts with Siri that just aren't available via the touch screen.

I use it mostly for reminders, timers, tasks, and alarms.

I find that it has a very high accuracy rate and saves time.

I used the original App version of Siri for a little bit, but found it to be more "gimmick" than usual. The real utility of Siri came when Apple integrated it into the core apps and geo-location system of the phone.

I find myself irritated when my iPad doesn't respond to my attempts to invoke Siri with a long press. It's really become part of how I interact with iOS systems.

I dream of Siri.

Ever since I got headphones with an in-line mic, I never take my phone out of my pocket to make calls. It's pretty limited on the 4, and when I started using it, it was pretty crappy, but now it gets just about everything first shot, and it's still a quicker/better experience than me taking the phone out of my pocket, swipe unlocking, putting in my password, hitting Phone, finding the contact and calling them.

Even if I don't use Siri for anything else (I would) the enhanced functionality and recognition over the iOS voice recognition will be a boon!

Here's 2 cents too.

siri does not work very well.
does not work as advertised

ok sheep, I bet you never even used it.

Isn't it sad that no matter how good Apple is people always try to find a way to make out they are not good. Aka jealousy of course but isn't is sad.

For you. Works great for me.

Perhaps all the PC fanboys still speak like Microsoft Sam and siri cannot understand speech speech impediment :p

All together in Eric Cartmans voice........Lame.

talkin' about yourself again?

Desperate times calls for desperate measures. Sales are slowing and the Samsung Galaxy S3 annoucement is less than a month away.
And notice how actors in Siri commercials are always alone. Let's see two people use Siri at the same time. Completely awkward. I must not get out because I never see people talking to Siri in public.

Am I the only one that noticed that

Samuel was using a BLACK iPhone 4S
and Zooey was using a WHITE iPhone 4S ...

that could start some debate ... and the real question what this a deliberate move by the advertise makers ???

The only time Zooey looks good is when she is professionally made up. On her own, she just looks wierd.

and dont get me started on her singing....
