Well you are right on the money. ... Without insulting anyone, there are a lot of ignorant, misinformed, and most likely kids on here who don't know much and post all sorts of really dumb things and questions, and have that new age worldwide sense of give it to me for free with everything on it entitlement that plagues our lazy society. They act like every little thing is the biggest. ... People can call me a troll...
A lot of truth in your words there. I haven't been around the site as long as you, but I understand some of what you're talking about. I actually edited my initial post a little - probably while you were replying. The words "troll" and "fanboy" should be banished from the MR lexicon. They don't add anything of value to the discussion.

Why is it every time that something new is available something has to be changed because it's ''so overwhelming''? Like seriously, could they just be ready for the worst?
1. What is "the worst" when it comes to a new product? When companies announce products, they make guesses based on market trends, historical sales, and analyst predictions. With something like the iPad, with sharply mixed predictions, it's even harder to predict what demand will be.

2. It's better to be conservative with your sales estimates so that you don't have unsold stock sitting around, which will later come back to haunt your company as a wasted expenditure and a product that was less successful than predicted. If you sell out, you generate stories about high demand, which will further drive up demand.

3. With estimates of between 250,000 and 1 million units available, depending on who you ask, it's not like there wasn't an ample supply available. It took almost a full quarter for the iPhone to sell a million units, if I recall correctly, and it sold about 200,000 on its first day. If the iPad sells out today, even with the low end 250k figure, it will have beat the iPhone--a product that was better received overall in the press.

Made my order

Already ordered mine to ship to my office, a magnificent birthday present from my magnificent girlfriend. I'm figuring that come Cinco de Mayo I'll be sipping a margarita and enjoying a revolutionary and magical experience...or at least the margarita will make me feel that way...

Good linx.

I think this part is particularly interesting:
In addition, AppleInsider has received word that the number of iPads shipped to each retail store location will be based solely on the number reserved for pickup at that store. In other words, fewer in-store reservations will mean a lighter stock of hardware.

That's not how they did it for the iphone, or atleast I was told that they would have atleast the prorders and a decent supply over that. Things might get a lil hairy with people who expect to pick one up on day one without ordering.

Just reserved mine for store pickup. It says they are still handed out on first come first serve basis. Does this mean if they get more reservations than actual iPads people who didn't reserve one will be turned away?

I wonder if the 3G response will be equally as high. To me the wifi is just so limiting. I've had an ipod touch, now an iphone. Having the iphone, with anywhere internet is just so . . . freeing.

BTW, will the ipad work on EDGE too?

I believe it says after 3 pm, it becomes first come first serve. The point of reserving one is so that it will be there for you specifically.

I'm just hoping there isn't a 100 person line to pick these up at 9 AM. Although, even so such a line would go fast since there's no activation to worry about.

They aren't going to stop making them. You could actually wait for it a little bit. Oh wait these people can't do that. They live in an instant gratification society. On top of that, half of them want a discount or a handout.

Or maybe they CAN wait, but won’t if they don’t have to. Same as you and me and everyone might choose to do anything sooner if it’s possible, but will wait if it’s not :)

Just a question, not trying to stir anything up. I have an iPhone and am checking my email and sports scores and lots of other things when I am out and about. But instead of more free, I am in a way more bound. Those things would still be there when I returned home. Sure, using my iPhone to look up numbers, map something, etc, is great when I am out, but for a lot of people it turns into an obsession with being connected. Look at the success of twitter, which IMHO is just ridiculous. Are we more free, or more enslaved by having the internet wherever we go.

The only two reasons I can see for having a 3G model is if you take it to a friend or family members house who does not have internet or wifi and you can't get on there but want to use it or likewise for traveling.

The other would be so my wife or I could use it in the car while driving somewhere.

In either instance an iPhone, though less fun on a smaller screen would suffice, so I'm not sure I can really see a need for the 3G model and it's data costs. Unless you don't already have an iPhone or you simply have that much cash to toss around.

While I generally agree with your sentiment, the negative overtone of it makes me more worried about people like you than those that are excited about getting their iPad. :p

It's my understanding that EDGE and 3G go together as a package deal. Would I be mistaken?

No need to worry about me, my mother has the market cornered on that (and I am a grown man and father of two).

According to the Tech Specs on Apples site...
Wi-Fi + 3G model
* UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz)
* GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

Yes there are remote access options.

Will it be possible to remotely run a real Mac from the iPad? If I knew that I could get a hold of my primary computer anytime I wanted to that would help in making the decision to buy.

I use iTeleport (was named jaadu vnc), and it's brilliant on the iPhone. The same developer also makes an app called Jaadu RDP (remote desktop) which I use to remotely admin windows servers.

The touch controls are nicely done in both apps. I can't wait to use the iPad for remote access work. If only the F5 FirePass portal would come up with a safari friendly means of doing port tunnelling, I could remotely work from my local Starbucks on a 10" iPad. I hate lugging around a laptop now, which is funny because at one point it was the bee knees being able to work from anywhere within WiFi range.

Good luck with your researching.

I reserved my iPad for store pickup right after 8:30am this morning once I found the proper page on apple's site to start the reservation process.

Unfortunately, the Seinfeld episode with Jerry & Elaine at the car rental counter always comes to mind when I see the word "reservation" for a product. ;)

Either way, looking forward to April 3rd.

Yeah I would imagine it would be very good for travel. I reserved a wifi iPad, but might sell it 6 months down the road and get a 3G version. I love the idea of buying a month's worth of access (on the device, with no contract), and then canceling after the vacation is done.

Maybe it's just me or my browser, but I can't specify which store I want to reserve at; the apple.com page for doing so seems to be missing a lot of fields.

I got on before I hit the gym at 5:30 and was a little confused because I went in through the online store and the only option was having one shipped and I wanted to reserve one for pickup. When I got back about 7:30 am I went to the iPad section and reserved a 16 GB. I was thinking about getting on to upgrade to a 32 GB, but when I went to the site to change my order it got hung up and I eventually stopped the process. It will be interesting how many they pre-sold for shipping and pick up.

They probably pre-sold like 45 of these things.
Get it now! We're running out of them! (what's it for? we don't know!)
Right...

I can still reserve a 32GB at the busiest store in my area.

There is an App for that!

I never would have thunk this... eva.
I thought people bought apple products because they were awesome.
Apparently not.
The iPad is 'meh' not 'awesome'.
The iPhone is awesome, the mac pro is awesome, the 27inch imac is awesome, the 17" MBP is awesome and the (cracked)apple tv+airport extreme is awesome .
Everything else is 'meh'. That includes the ipad, ipods, small screen imac, mac mini and the magic mouse (i get some severe RSI from using it it's such a painful thing. I wonder how painful the ipad would be to use while laying down to type/read/multitouch ).

I agree with this. Not that I'm saying some people won't genuinely enjoy the iPad. But I know that if HP or Dell or Microsoft had released this EXACT product, it would flop. But because it has an :apple: on it, it will be more successful. Somehow Apple has managed to create this incredible "can do no wrong" image. Jobs could take a crap and stick an :apple: on it and sell it and people would believe it's solid gold right now. It's a sheep mentality, but I guess kudos to Apple and their marketing team for creating such a strong brand.
