TRUMP GETS VISAS FOR 70 FOREIGN WORKERS AT MAR-A-LAGO DESPITE 'HIRE AMERICAN' PLEDGE
BY HARRIET SINCLAIR ON 11/5/17 AT 4:29 PM

U.S.DONALD TRUMPMAR-A-LAGOBUY AMERICAN

The Trump Organization has secured visas to hire 70 foreign workers who will be employed during the 2017-18 season as maids, cooks, and servers.

Despite running on an ‘American jobs’ ticket, Trump’s former company – which is currently run by his sons Donald Jr. and Eric – has opted to take on foreign labor at the president’s Mar-a-Lago resort, which is dubbed the ‘Winter White House.’

Trump has previously defended hiring workers from outside the U.S., stating back in 2016 when he was questioned by Senator Marco Rubio about hiring foreign labor: “It’s very, very hard to get people. Other hotels do the exact same thing.”

That’s just one isolated, contrary example. The majority of American companies, especially outside of tech, don’t do that. They hire a foreign H1B worker for as little pay as they can get away with, in most cases.

The H1-B program has been plagued with fraud and abuses for more than two decades. There is no reason for Tata and Infosys to have built a large presence of temp workers and consultants through loopholes in the system.

Companies like Disney and others have laid off tech workers only to hire companies like Tata and Infosys to supply workers at much lower salary ranges. There should be no automatic employment eligibility for spouses. If there is, these companies get a two for one and displace American workers.

The IEEE, ACM and other professional engineering and technology organizations have for years complained about the H1-B policies.

Seeing as you called it ‘university’ And not college I imagine you are not from the USA. either you do live here as a transplant in which case you probably do have some experience with our youth or you dont live here at all and are speculating.

I know a number of younger Americans either in college or not long out that would gladly do the work.

I would also say it is disheartening when I get emails at my work where I am a senior developer (in IT) and half if not 3/4 of the names are clearly Indian or similar. At the same time I have had friends who were laid off from jobs so the company could replace them with outsourcing or with contract workers (namely Indians) with h1b visas just because they are cheaper.

Born, raised, and live in the US.

You go where the talent and desire is.

- I rarely find spelling errors and the inability to clearly communicate on resumes from Indian developers.
- I rarely have foreign candidates turn down positions because they expect to make the same salary as other employees with tenure starting on day one.
- I rarely have foreign workers sitting at their desks with faces planted firmly in their Instagram accounts.
- I rarely have foreign workers regularly do the bare minimum just because "that's what I'm getting paid to do".

Shall I go on?

You want people like me to hire more US workers? Fix education and the attitude and I'll consider it.

Nov 3, 2017 - Trump won permission to hire 70 maids, cooks and servers at the Mar-a-Lago Club for the 2017-18 tourist season, according to newly released data from the U.S. Labor Department. In 2016-17, Trump hired 64foreign workers at the Palm Beach property. MIND THE GAP: At two Boca Raton country clubs, ...

The immigration policy of the Trump administration is a train wreck. One minute they're attacking H-1B and then the next minute they're claiming they want immigrants to have "higher skill levels". And as pointed out already, Trump himself doesn't actually have an issue hiring foreign nationals for jobs because it's supposedly "so hard" to find workers in the U.S. It's just bizarro world 24/7 in terms of what they say and what they do.

Strange that the wives spouses of H1B workers would also have to work if H1B visas are for specialized jobs with high pay...

Edit: fixed sexism

Nope. These companies can do their engineering here, or pay oversea salaries + tax rates. One or the other.

Yeah, unfortunately the Trump changes are so poorly thought out, the only real alternative is b. move more engineering out of the US. This would lead to fewer jobs for Americans, as those highly paid engineers would no longer require support services in the USA.

Yes...but Trump did this to avoid hiring Hispanics and Black workers who live in nearby West Palm Beach...he wants only European White Workers....he would say...his members demand it.

By spending years working with H1B Indians. In fact, one of my good friends is from India who came over on an H1B visa years ago, and he said that the amount of fraud is staggering. People with connections, but no experience and fake degrees are routinely given jobs and, obviously, screw **** up beyond repair. There are obviously some very smart and talented people coming over, but the vast majority of low and mid level IT H1Bs do a subpar job. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

The H1B program is highly flawed and needs a complete overhaul. That said, not allowing spouses to work is... random. It sounds less like an attempt to repair the problems with the program, and more a random lashing out by people in charge who have no idea what they're doing.

Apple, why not just follow the Indian CEOs of Google and Microsoft and outsource all your development to India so you don’t have to deal with Trump?

Good, the H1B program has done nothing but lower wages for tech workers.
This is absolutely incorrect. We usually hear statements like that for mediocre IT folks who think they are entitled to six digit figures simply for existing and showing up.

H1B salaries are reported to the DHS , to protect American citizens from the cheaper alternative. Yes there is abuse of the program. However, most of the cases are employees who are better qualified and or willing to do work that their American counterparts are not willing to do. For example, consulting, and being on the road 5 days a week, and/or relocating every couple of years.

That’s just one isolated, contrary example. The majority of American companies, especially outside of tech, don’t do that. They hire a foreign H1B worker for as little pay as they can get away with, in most cases.

"That’s just one isolated, contrary example"

And isolated and contrary example? You may not have noticed this story is about technology companies, such as Apple and google.

"The majority of American companies, especially outside of tech, don’t do that.. "

The majority of American companies? Really? Perhaps you are not aware of the scope of the H1-B program addresses specialty occupations requiring highly specialized knowledge, in fields such as engineering, chemistry, biotech, medicine, etc.

"They hire a foreign H1B worker for as little pay as they can get away with, in most cases"

Perhaps you can speak further about this with some specifics.

Oh God no, they'd have to hire people from this country! And pay them a living wage!

Good, the H1B program has done nothing but lower wages for tech workers.

This has to be the best comment on the subject I have ever seen. Short, to the point and so true!

You even know what an H1-B is and the qualifications to get one? I guess you don't know companies sponsoring an H1-B application (and yes, they must or it is an immediate rejection) have to declare proof they cannot get a US citizen qualified to do the job? Ergo, nobody with an H1-B is stealing anyone's job because there isn't anyone to fill it, they are generally highly educated/trained/experienced or they won't qualify and are paid very well indeed.

Tech worker for major telco, can confirm the H1b shenanigans. They have laid off tons of support staff for various networking / programming jobs that should pay 85k+ and replacing them sub $30k idiots who can barely communicate. It is absolutely rampant, H1b visas should be illegal and is akin to slavery. Why? Their legal status is tied to their employment, if they're fired they are immediately deported. You think that's not a situation ripe for abuse?

Pretty easy to say you can't find someone to hire when you all collude together to make it possible...

Hey buddy, try walking across the border into Canada or your beloved Mexico without proper documentation and see what the hell happens.

First of all my beloved Mexico? I was using it as an example, secondly two wrongs don’t make a right. Trump’s not the only one don’t think for a second that I’m picking on the US because I’m not there is just as much racist crap that goes on here in the UK, wanting to keep people out because of where they are from is racist, I understand wanting to keep criminals and terrorists out but that doesn’t mean you have to stereotype people. Not all Muslims are terrorist just like not all Americans are Trump supporters (well I hope not anyway).

This is a difficult subject. I will need to dissagree and agree with this as

Im 50/50 on this as i do have experience in this industry and stuff like this unfortunately at times is necessary. foreign Chef's, cooks and specialty hospitality workers are very often come in and out (applebees cooks wont work). On the issue of tech, we had problems hiring Ember.js devs, "locals" were trash and out of state relo's wanted unrealistic figures. Then it comes down to losing a 30m+ project or importing good programmers from abroad.

There are winners and losers in this. Although good for the country, may have side effects that will be felt. Its a possibility.

Case and point? Posting links to stories that have absolutely nothing to do with H1-B visas, apparently intended to obfuscate, significantly erodes the credibility of claims made in your first paragraph.

It absolutely does, it shows intent. Intent to defraud and pay as little as possible for high skilled jobs and how far they are willing to go to do so. Want another?
