Why can't Apple just leave things alone? Everyone just wanted a Macbook Air with a retina screen. They give you the retina screen but take away all the connectivity. Everyone wanted an updated Mini, they gave us a speed and spec bump but took away the upgradeability.

The problem is that Ive has way too much power internally at Apple and no one left to tell him when his **** stinks. He is surrounded by "yes" men. Having absolutely no connectivity so Ive can make the laptop a few millimetres thinner is insanity and evidence of his form-over-function design philosophy taken to the absolute extreme.

Agreed. Nice avatar man. One of my favorite movies.

not innovative

There was already an overly expensive Waffle Maker

Guess only the gold bling was missing.

Btw, if you do want to heat your waffles faster on your grill, you can buy a :apple:dynamo and adapter for only $499 and attach it to Steve's grave cause I guess he must be turning in it pretty fast right now.
God dammit am I pissed off with this..

All these luddites.

Where's the floppy disk drive? What no DVD drive/writer? Can't install more RAM? No compact flash port? No docking station???????

It's a crippled machine. 7 lbs is not too much. Who needs more than 2.5 hours of battery anyway?

We can't live without them!!!!!!

==========

Oh yeah. Guess we can and we are.

The new models look like excellent computers for students or reporters who live in a wireless world. They would not be very good for very much else though. I predict that Apple is heading for just this kind of laptop powered by ARM. Users who need truly powerful laptops will drift off to something else.

They will sell a ton of these things, especially as they get into stores where people can get their hands on them. Most people don't need the connectivity day in and day out, there's an adapter if you need one, and because it's usb-c, 3rd party adapters and docks will become a dime a dozen.

The problem is the adapters are ridiculously overpriced. Like the $79 one earlier in this thread.

If they charged $15 for those, or at least threw one in with the machine, that'd be one thing. But they squeeze customers on the adapters, making the whole package less attractive.

No Magsafe?!?!

Just 1 USB-C, and with that no magsafe... very expencive just for getting less...

the apple logo doesn't look like it lights up, that has been a macbook staple since as long as I can remember. I don't know how I feel about this. Will be getting an air instead as well due to the price to performance ratio.

This is the new "MacBook", not MacBook Air.... makes you wonder what they have in store for the next Air... a hybrid iPad/laptop? That would be cool.

So, perhaps I'm not seeing something here. Does this mean, should I buy this laptop, that I won't be able to connect it to my generic 1080p monitor while charging it (or, alternatively, they will try to sell me a $30 adapter to achieve this)?.

Love the form factor, but some design decisions, in my opinion, are just ridiculous. Pretty sure they will add a second port on the next revision once they can figure out how.

Magsafe will be missed. Would love to see a 15" option. Still would like to see an ipad pro that can run both ios and osx for casual users like myself that mostly just do light computing music, internet, email, movies.

Though I would still chose this new macbook air over buying an iPad.

It ships when?

Livestream: Ships today.

Blog post: April 10.

I'm assuming the latter is correct?

Gah. I just spent a good 5 minutes trying to select, indent, and strike through that text on this iPad. I completely missed the few lines about the rMBP updates, which of course ship today with the MBP on 4/10.

Also, this thread...
I feel like many folks posting have not been near a crowded subway or cafe or meeting lately. Light is awesome, throw in a nice display, nicely re-engineered keyboard and many of us will be happy buyers with machines that suit our needs.

Gaming machine? Come on. Netbook? Haven't used a Chrome book lately, I see? "It's an iPad, with a keyboard." Yes. Except for the different OS, non-touch driven interface, trackpad, integrated keyboard, and totally different use cases. Also, use an iPad w/ keyboard on your lap and in meetings for a week and then get back to us.

I know this will get down voted into oblivion. It's ok, to each her own! Having watched the show since 1995 or so lends a certain perspective. It is what it is, there's an early adoption tax, there's a method to their madness in all liklihood, it meets some of our needs perfectly and others not at all. Ain't free will and choice grand, and aren't we lucky to have choices.

The post that kills me the most is "No thanks." I can't imagine a day during which I'd seek out a VW (car) forum and comment on the new Passat that I don't favor. I don't understand why. (By the way, that's totally different than running why the new MB's features don't meet your needs, which I find interesting and informative.)

Bye bye MagSafe :( Probably going to be lots of broken ports now if people trip over your cord.

I think the idea behind this Macbook is that it's not meant to be tethered by wires while you use it. It's a mobile computer. And don't leave it on a charger all the time, that's bad for the battery.

Time to bend over if you want to be able to use... well, ANYTHING with this Macbook.

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MJ1K2AM/A/usb-c-digital-av-multiport-adapter $79 for USB-C to USB+video outputs

There's a USB-C to USB adapter for $19, but it has no pass-through port for charging, so it's less useful than you think.

Also no sign of a USB-C to ethernet or similar.

So, if you want to connect more than one USB device, you have to buy that, plus a USB hub. You're looking at a hundred bucks on top of the price of the laptop to actually make it usable. What a joke. This thing is like a glorified and overpriced iPad.

I'll stick with a regular MacBook for my next update and hope that Apple doesn't go down the USB-C road for those in the next major update.

I wish Apple would stop trying to make everything thinner. Some of us are not weaklings who are capable of carrying a 4 pound, .75 inch thick laptop and prefer functionality over thinness and lightness.

If the charger brick has *at least* one USB port on it - I think this computer will do ok. *AND EVERYTHING I SAY BELOW ASSUMES IT DOES*. I know plenty of people who would buy this and be happy with it as an internet machine.

Furthermore, I actually applaud Apple for making a distinction between the MB and MBP again. I really don't know why everyone is complaining about the single port - this computer isn't supposed to replace your MBP, a single port is all you need on a super mobile computer. Wireless technology and cloud storage are the future and Apple is trying to help usher those realities into place. I have enough free cloud storage to backup all my files, plus a NAS. I don't need ports for 100% of what I do on a daily basis.

Yes, yes, I know that just because I don't need ports doesn't mean nobody does. *But* the people out there who need ports KNOW THEY NEED PORTS - so they wouldn't even dream of buying this computer. And we all know a redesign of the MBP and MBA are in the works - they won't leave this design to the MB alone...so just wait for the redesign of the computer you want.

This certainly isn't a computer I will buy (though I think they did a good job with the redesign) it simply doesn't fit my needs...but I'm excited because I think they did a good job with it and it means good things are in the works for the rest of the Mac family. Then again...if there is no USB port on the power brick there might be a lot of very unhappy customers...

You'll have to forgive me but I can't seem to understand where this device fits in. Don't get me wrong, it looks great and from an engineering perspective it's very advanced but I personally don't think it deserves to be its own product.

Think about it:

1. Spec wise and design wise, it's comparable to the Macbook Air. In fact, during the conference I thought it was going to be a new retina Macbook air.

2. Price wise, it's exactly the same amount as the 13" Macbook Pro (which is more powerful, has great battery life, a bigger screen and is still very light and thin).

Why didn't they just call it the Macbook Air Retina and have it replace the current retina line? Other than style, I'm just not sure what the appeal of this new laptop is especially when you can get a much better laptop in the 13" Macbook pro for the exact same price (or you can save a bit of money on the Macbook air and still get similar performance).

Again, don't get me wrong, it looks fantastic, but the price to performance ratio is not adding up.
