Vs Air:

Better battery life
Touch Bar
No notch
Fan
67W adapter included
Thicker/heavier
Worse camera
Smaller screen/bigger bezels
Speakers & mic: jury still out, likely minimal differences

I think this has its place, but the price being more than the new Air does seem weird. If you prefer the Touch Bar, no notch, and best available battery life, at least you still have an option.
You forgot not Magsafe 3 Charging meaning you have only one TB3 port while charging. The M2 Air has 2 x TB3 ports available while charging.

Any idea when the back to school stuff will start in the US? Looking at the past couple of years, it's been June 15th. Does it usually fluctuate or is that a safe bet?

This is an ideal MacBook if you really miss the Touch Id and Id you don't want the Notch. The machine does contains all the latest internals.
I think you mean Touch Bar, but yeah, I do see a small segment of people who would be happy with this, despite what these forums claim.

Apple's got the supply lines and manufacturing down to a tee with this by now, so I'm guessing their margins are tight as can be - why not offer this and make a few more schmeckles?

I don't understand why anybody would buy this over the MacBook Air.
My guess is this is primarily for institutional or governmental buyers that have already qualified and approved the older model, so getting this updated revision approved for buying is an easy processes. Whereas putting a totally new model through qualification and approval will take some time. Most likely Apple signed supply agreements stating they will keep some version of the 13" MBP around for X years, and they figure might as well sell it publicly too because why not?

Was very surprised to see it comes with a TouchBar. Weird. I really liked the TouchBar (or at least the promise of what it would have been able to do if other developers had utilized it, but could see now why they didn't--Apple didn't support it much). But, on my 2018 13" MBP, the TouchBar was super flakey, meaning it would frequently just turn off, go black, then sometimes come back on when I Rebooted, sometimes not, super annoying. Anyway, glad to put that experiment behind me (have a 2021 16" MBP, which in the past (roughly) year, has been flawless (so far).

Observations like this amuse me. Just because something wasn't good or great in the past, somehow that's a reason not to improve upon it going forward? Apple looks forward. TouchBar does have a purpose and usefulness, and as you said, it just needs to be realized. The only way to have that happen is for it to exist.

But I'm surprised this laptop doesn't come with MagSafe. Did they keep that just on the Air purely for marketing reasons?

Aka shed load of M1 versions they realised they wouldn’t be able to shift. Unbox, take apart, stick new M2 board in. Rebox. Et voila!

The fan didn’t make much of a difference with the M1 but maybe the M2 uses more power so you could get a bigger performance boost with the MBP. Also doesn’t have a notch, has better battery life, and has a touch bar.

I’ll be getting the MBA but I can see why the MBP would appeal to some people.
The bigger screen of the Air goes up and around the notch, you can have the display never show the notch if you'd prefer the smaller screen. The battery and Touch Bar are real reasons to choose the Pro. I personally liked the Touch Bar.

This machine makes no sense! Update the design, put MagSafe and HDMI in it, drop the Touch Bar and call it the 'MacBook'.

I do think they should have retained the Touch Bar as an option for the MacBook Pros, I personally hate it but know people who do like it.

I am looking forward to more RAM but the cost is way over the board if I want to get the M2 one. So I think I'll just wait. Btw why so many people hate it just because?
I am waiting for Apple to implement virtual notch on newer designs to get full menubar and TouchBar is neat sometimes.

At that point Apple might as well just discontinue it altogether. Why bother updating the design?
-_-

because it seems so lazy!
I believe Apple had this practice before so no stranger.
However lazy it is, Apple updated internals of iPod Touch for 2 generations before discontinuing it. So I am hopeful they will update this design with M3 in it.

Because I think there is a market for a machine more capable than the Air, but cheaper than the Pro.
Lower 14" Pro price to fill that section of the market or offer more SKU in the Air.
TBH, this 13" MacBook Pro production cost for Apple prolly low enough that even if the margin is not great, it is still acceptable. And it is just so much easier to order a few thousands more than trying to redesign a new chassy just for that product.

Debating if I should place an order. There is a chip shortage in place.

Haha sometimes, I wonder how many Apple products you own and use. I always find you almost ordering every product Apple releases hehe. Although how do you use multiple laptops?

Secondly, I placed an order for MBP 14 today and it will be delivered somewhere in August. So, I wonder what would be the timeline for MBP Pro M2...although I did do CTO.

The worst value-wise purchase in Apple's Mac (laptop) lineup.

I don't understand why anybody would buy this over the MacBook Air.

The absurdest mac ever.

I dont understand why this thing even still exists!!

Jason Snell (I believe) mentioned that while he doesn't understand why Apple still offers it, he thinks it might be because it is the laptop of choice for business/enterprise/institutional purchasers and they buy millions of them every year so Apple keeps offering it.

And I think this makes sense. The 4-port 13" Intel model was very popular with software developers at a former company I worked for and we bought thousands of them every year. These folks needed sustained CPU performance (which the fan could help with) and they used the TouchBar in their daily workloads. And considering it is still far cheaper than the 14" MacBook Pro, I could see this being a very popular model with corporate IT departments.

So yes, this is a very poor choice for consumers, prosumers and many professionals, who are better served with an Air or the 14"/16" MacBook Pro.

But it seems to be a very smart choice for certain classes of professionals that are large enough to keep the model relevant in Apple's product line.

I wonder if one reason this Mac exists is to get the M2 chip to reviewers BEFORE the new MacBook Air ships. Get some coverage for the chip, build up hype, then release the sleek new hardware, and get another flood of attention.

They shouldn’t have wasted their resources on this, and instead all focused on the MacBook Air that surely won’t get delayed for months right?
