Because the thermal throttling is a non issue. Go look at comparisons of last years M1 models. The battery life difference is only 2 hours. The Air, however has fast charging which allows a 50% charge in 30 minutes. That’s 9 hours of battery life in 30 minutes.

The M1 MacBook Air thermal throttles after 10 minutes of sustained load with a performance loss of 15%. So basically you are paying for a M1 chip which you cannot even fully utilize if you are actually using the full capabilities of this thing.

That is not a non issue and a big advantage that the 13” MacBook Pro has.

Center Stage doesn't create such a crap image on other devices with the same camera hardware. Even when held at the same distance from the subject.
It’s because of the wide angle lens coupled with the fact that the subject is generally farther away on a Studio Display thus the necessity of using a cropped image.

The 1080P camera on the MacBook Air could also be using a smaller physical sensor leading to the same issue. Better specs does not mean better image quality. Until it's reviewed we won't know.

The performance loss is 8% and it doesn’t take much longer than that for the Pro to begin to throttle too. Again, go watch the comparison videos.

It’s the same camera the 14 and 16 MacBook Pro’s have. So, no.

He saw a performance loss of 15% when doing his testing. That is a huge performance loss as a result of thermal throttling on the M1 MacBook Air.

Looking forward to those M1 13" MacBook Pro vs. M2 13" MacBook Pro and M2 MacBook Air vs. M2 13" MacBook Pro YouTube videos. Though, I know that the latter will still be a bit later. The staggering makes it so that I'm not spending WAY too much time on YouTube overloading on all of it! 🤣

Because it doesn’t work the same way on a Studio Display as it does on iPads. 🙄. The image is cropped on the Studio Display. Look, you can read about it and learn or keep coming back here with “but but but”, your choice.

He got that, AnAndTech got 8% 🤷‍♂️

The camera on the Studio Display is an extra wide angle lens to give a very broad view for Center Stage. The actual image used is cropped from a relatively small portion of this wide angle. The distance from the camera to the subject is also larger than on the iPad. They have to process it to remove the wide angle distortion. The result is an image that is lower in contrast and has some obvious “upscaling” artifacts. The iPads that have Center Stage don’t use quite as wide angle a lens, though their image quality is not a good a just a regular camera, either also due to the processing required.

I suspect that Apple got carried away with the “wow” factor of Center Stage. It demos well and people think that it will be useful for them. I’m not convinced. Maybe in an iPad you will want to dynamically want to include multiple people in the image. At a desktop display, I think that is less likely and you are more likely to be a single person sitting at your desk. A regular camera might have been a better choice. We’ll ahve to see where they go with this.

True but we do already have reviews of the similar camera in the MBPs

I agree that they should be the same, but my original point was that until we have things in hand Apple's claims of superior specs don't alway equal real world results. The studio display was a prime example. Looked good on paper, demoed well on stage, but botched it in execution. Apple has a long history of claiming things are "the same" and sourcing parts from different vendors with mixed results. Also, the fact that the MacBook Pros (and iMacs) rely so much on ISP to achieve good image results could see the Air ship with a less-than-perfect webcam without clear explanation and leave users waiting on software/firmware updates to "get it right."

Maybe I'm in the minority but I really like the USB instead of the Mag-safe. Nothing against the mag-safe but I like being able to use the same cord to charge multiple devices and not to have to carry a dedicated mag-safe cord. Curious if its possible to charge the MBA using the USB ports like I can on my MBP or if the mag-safe is the only way to charge it and the ports are just . . . ports?

Apple iMac G3 DV 400MHz 384MB/10GB/CD-ROM

Available now, with M2 chip
Okay but you know that computer would still look good on your desk. Don't lie.

If it would at least support multiple external displays I guess there could be a clear compelling argument over the Air.

14" M2 MBP with > 16 GB RAM: 2.4k
13" M2 MBP with > 16 GB RAM (plus 512 GB SSD to match the 14"): 1.9k
M2 MBA with > 16 GB RAM (plus 512 GB SSD to match the 14" and 10 core graphics to match the 13"): 1.9k

Fail to see how the 13" is a "bad buy" when it literally is $500 less than the 14", and the same prices as the M2 MBA. If anything, the M2 MBA looks overpriced. Different strokes for different folks, but after having this M1 Air, I am definitely the kind of user who needs active cooling.

  1. If you call it "dumb" you are bashing it. If you don't like the product, ignore it and move along. Why call it out?
  2. So we should ignore historical data of sales Apple themselves presented based on a similar line-up prior? Geez, let's call Apple and tell them how wrong they are.
Again, if you don't think the product is worth it, move along and vote with your wallet. Lot's of people have voted so far this Mac is worth it.
No offence but you lost already so deal with it and move on.
