I was so excited when the Apple store closed down this morning. My hopes were so high for a new MBP.

I think I heart shattered when I found out this is the update. =(

God, if you're up there, PLEASE let next Tuesday be the day. The suspense is killing me. Also I'm tired of getting on these rumor sites finding little itty bitty insignificant details about things that could happen. I'm sad. ='(

Where is my 2 terabyte iPhone? I want to put all my movies on my phone. Seriously, stop whining.

I'm not going to read the past 17 pages, but this seems like a smart move from Apple:

* The 8GB iPhone is getting long in the tooth and everyone knows it.
* It's coming in to tax-return and Republican "refund" season, meaning folks will have some extra cash kicking around.
* The 3G iPhone is on the visible horizon, but there has been no official announcement.
* The SDK is going to make a bunch of applications available by March that people are going to want to fill their memory with.
* It makes the iPhone seem "fresh" while capitalizing on falling flash memory prices.
* People will pay a premium for additional storage, and possibly pay again to upgrade to 3G.

Apple's a business, they're going to do whatever they can to make a buck.

Me, even though the 16Gb is really cool, I'm still holding out for the 3G iPhone, and if it means August, then so be it.

I don't understand the negative votes or feelings. You know storage will be upgraded on ever piece of technology that is applicable, given enough time. Congrats to Apple for shoe-horning this much storage into such small devices. I'd still be happy with my 8GB iPhone if the prices were lowered. I've got some solid usage out of it and am happy with the product and am glad Apple is still adding to it.

I guess for it to really make a difference, I'd need a 32GB iPhone, even 16GB isn't enough to fit my entire music library, let alone a few videos for a round-trip plane ride. I just make a Smart Playlist in iTunes of songs I haven't heard in the past month that's limited to 6GB and resync it every couple days to get a fresh batch of tunes. I keep the songs I always want to have in a separate playlist, so with those two playlists I have ~1500 songs with room for videos.

go apple! Keep the iPhone iterations coming.

Great and sad at the same time. So happy that SSD's are getting larger, faster, better, and yes ... cheaper. I will probably now buy the ipod touch and stay away from the phone. However, it's the MBP that I'm waiting day and night for. My 1st gen 17" 1 GHz PowerPC G4 has been a loyal work horse but ... please :apple:!

What if it means later than that ? :)

wow... I literally JUST bought the 8GB version last night at the apple store.... I can't believe no one said anything. I even checked macrumors yesterday to see if there were any leaks on the 16GB version. Wow, I'm kind of upset.

I bought mine 3 days ago from AT&T. I'm on my way back for the upgrade (so I'll have room for all those new apps on the horizon). Apparently all that is necessary is to swap the SIM card.

The fact that the 32GB drive iPod is $499 makes one really think the 64GB SSD in the MacBook Air is way over priced!

Want to know why Apple did this...shortly after MacWorld/Holidays. Check out their stock from the start of the first quarter. It's been a downward crash. And the MBAir did not help much...yet.

Besides the muti-touch trackpad, what is Apple realistically going to update in the Macbook Pro? Yes, maybe Penryn processors, but if that incremental speed boost is what stands between u and a macbook pro purchase, i'd say screw it and just buy it.....you are never going to always have the "latest" hardware/software, get over it already!!! I personally believe Apple may release Penryn-based Macbook Pro's soon, but will wait to incorporate the multi-touch trackpad until it can be simultaneously released in the Macbook and Macbook Pro.

Apple "Genius"

i'm really kinda surprised by this move. i think the prices are a little too high also. i guess we'll see how they sell.

Though the 16GB could have easily replaced the 8GB for the same price, Apple knew there would be a stampede of folks who just purchased the 8GB model crying foul and wanting a replacement. (Well, they are still crying foul but can't really say they've been cheated.)

By not discontinuing the 8GB model, these same folks might remain on the other side of the fence because of the $100 difference and theoretically, they still got what they paid for.

They're not available in the UK store yet. I wonder why that is? I speculated over on my blog http://www.corpmac.co.uk about this - they simply may be a delay in updating the UK store - or more seriously, we know that the phone hasn't been selling as well in the UK and Europe as predicted - so they may be delaying the 16Gb model's introduction here to allow inventory of the 8Gb model to clear down a bit. I hope that's not the case.

Would be nice if they lowered the price of the 8Gb to help clear the inventory, I've already got a classic so can't really justify £200 on a touch, but if it was £150 I might...

I live in Europe and when I'm out in town it takes me no longer that 5 minutes to find a free open WIFI network on my iPhone.

Thats great that you live in "Europe". Considering that Europe is made up of many different countries, I don't think this applies to many of them. Certainly here in Germany it doesn't. T-mobile has you by the balls, figuratively speaking on wiFi hotspots.

I got to page 11 of this thread, then went away for a little bit and now it's at 16 (or 17), so please forgive me if somebody has mentioned this in the last few pages.

For all those wondering if they can upgrade from their 8GB iPhones to the 16Gb iPhone without extending their contract ...

You can't in the UK.

The O2 terms and conditions make it pretty clear that the 18 month contract starts again if you upgrade, and that your old phone will only continue to work if somebody pays for another iPhone contract (or unlocks it illegally, etc.)

However, I'm sure they are more than happy for you to upgrade ... because they gain one extended contract for your new phone, and the possibility of a second contract being activated for your old phone.

More information here (o2.co.uk)

What if it means later than that ? :)
For me, that's fine - I'm not going to buy one until I have cash in hand, and based on the pricing today, that means saving $500 between now and the release date. I've played with enough of the EDGE iPhones to know that waiting for pages and information to load would drive me crazy and I'd feel like I made a bad investment. I'd buy one with my tax return or "refund" but most of that money is going into savings and my student loan.

32 GB... wow!!! Very nice! And that 16 GB iPhone is great, too.

Does this mean the 3G iPhone will have a 32 GB option this summer??? That is just awesome... that thing is going to sell like crazy if so.

In the meantime, it may finally be time for me to ditch my iPod photo for a Touch...

Practically every other Apple product that gets updated keeps the same price point or is cheaper. By breaking that trend I would expect to see people complain.

Practically no other Apple product has gotten a 33% price drop within two months of release.

Asking for a $200 discount plus double the flash memory within a 4 month span is asking for a bit too much. The 16GB version is still cheaper than what the 8GB cost just a few short months ago.

Macbook Air compromises too much to be the size that it is....and for those that want such a truly small form factor for travel/business, they're going to want something a little more substantial if it's going to be a true "mobile" computing platform. You can't tell me that little USB door thingymabob isn't going to break after six months, right? Reminds me of those lousy cellphone charger door thingys [excuse my jargon]. Apple needs to re-focus on what it's doing, time capsule, MB Air, etc. are examples of beautiful design and function, but also signal a departure from a truly focused Apple. I see a continue downward trend in Apple stock.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A93 Safari/419.3)

It never fails, when I buy anything from apple, it gets updated a month later. Oh well, I bought a touch for the wifi, not the capacity

Well, I am of the belief that more apps are being developed for the phone/touch than originally thought. Ahead of the SDK.
The SDK will be released anytime.
I won't be surprised to see a 1/2 dozen or so apps released by the end of the month to go along with todays updates.

For those still "waiting"

Get over it. It ain't gonna happen. Keep waiting with those who are still waiting for a headless iMac with slots. Keep waiting with those who are still waiting for an FM tuner on the iPod. Keep waiting with those who are still waiting for a tablet Mac. Just keep on waiting while the world passes you by.
