The fact that the 32GB drive iPod is $499 makes one really think the 64GB SSD in the MacBook Air is way over priced!

Could be.. but also could be that 64GB SSD still cost a lot more to produce due to low demand or yields. Then again, Apple is notorious for asking an arm and a leg for a BTO machine.

For those who have missed it, the restocking fee is 10%, or ~$40.

That's actually a pretty reasonable price, considering that you're returning just to upgrade, not even because you "didn't like it". Consider that:

- they have to pay to "refurbish" it - ship, clean, re-initialize, test, reapply all those little protective stickers
- they now have to re-sell it as "refurbished" (going rate is $349).

Um, don't you think that the cost of "returns" is already built into the selling price of new units? That's just how retail works. The 10% restocking fee is just gravy for Apple.

Get over it. It ain't gonna happen. Keep waiting with those who are still waiting for a headless iMac with slots. Keep waiting with those who are still waiting for an FM tuner on the iPod. Keep waiting with those who are still waiting for a tablet Mac. Just keep on waiting while the world passes you by.
Rubbish - everyone knows a 3G iPhone will happen in 2008. That's not waiting, that's planning your investment.

You're comparing apples to oranges. A headless iMac won't happen, the FM tuner for the iPod is available as an add on, and the tablet Mac is vaporware.

Yes I know all that, but if you try to make it explicit to consumers that you're selling them a "WiFi mobile device" their eyes will glaze over and they'll walk away. Far better to keep referring to it as an iPod and quietly add more and more features (which is what they have been doing until now).

Ok maybe he is stepping it up a bit. But not by much....no I don't think so really. Besides, the ipod touch is called that....the ipod touch as opposed to a regular ipod. Consumers can still get their generic ipod if they want but there is also the new device. He is migrating his entire installed base to the future tech.
He is not perfect but Steve still knows what he is doing. ;)

Dear complainers -

This thread is for iPhone. If you're here to insert your comment about the lack of MBP's, believe us, we've heard it. The only source you have that one is even in the pipe is MacRumors, which is hardly Apple's official outlet, so it's difficult to justify getting upset about something that Apple hasn't announced.

Twice the memory costs (about) twice as much. There has to be a price increase, as the price of this type of memory hasn't really gone down much in the last year. Hense, the price increase.

The reason for no 32GB iPhone yet is, if I recall, the radio for the cellphone takes up physical space, so there's not room for a second set of chips.

These are only my opinions.

The voice of reason makes its debut, thank you sir!

Should have seen that coming. Got caught up in the MacWorld Fever. Twice as much RAM for only a $100 premium. Bummer. Plus mine's engraved so no chance to exchange it. Anyone want it for $349 OBO PM me.

You should have known that having your iXXXXX engraved is tantamount to signing your soul away with your own blood :D

i personally think this was an obvious move from apple. It was going to happen sooner or later and it just happened to be sooner rather than later,

I knew this the moment i bought my ipod touch, but you wont hear me complaining simply because i knew it wa going to happen, i just couldnt resist its call and couldnt afford an iPhone lol.

anyone who complains about this should really shut up. you should have known better

So in the iPhone and the Touch you get a 16GB memory upgrade for $100. Why, oh, why does a 64GB drive in the MacBook Air cost $1000 for 64GB? In fact, the entire 32GB+device (Touch) costs $499. What gives?

Somewhat wrote about the life of the iPod Classic. I hope Apple understands that there are still many music only freaks who could not care a rats ass about video and want or need more storage for large music collections. It's about the TUNES!! Yes we are in the minority but like high end audio there is a market. I could never hold my 33,000 + songs on anything smaller than the 160GB Classic. A beautiful machine to hold all of the music I want to take evrywhere with me.

My theory on the early release...

Wait'n for the good stuff

There are some whiners, which is to be expected. Just because you spent $500 on a 4 GB iphone, doesn't mean that everyone else has to suffer too! Upgrades are a given. Praises to the waiters! My first iPhone will be 3G with a sweet processor, copy and paste capability, true GPS perhaps, and do I dare say, 80 GB? Now that to me, would be worth $500. Because until that happens, I have no need for another gadget, especially just to say I have an iPhone. The current model left me high in dry when I needed information from a friend's iPhone...the edge network in Indianapolis doesn't seem to be that great. Convinced me to hold out for a lot longer. Just my two cents. Rock on Apple! Just because your product isn't what I need now, doesn't mean you're not innovative! Keep it up:)

It's a bit crappy for those waiting for MBP updates, but otherwise this is great news. Expectations for iPhone 2 will now be much higher; Apple must be confident that they will be able to increase the storage again this year. 100GB before the year is out? That would be incredible progress.

Im surprised that Apple is charging $500 for this. I would have expected them to drop the price down to a 250/325/400 scheme. How much 32 gb of flash anyway?

For me, that's fine - I'm not going to buy one until I have cash in hand, and based on the pricing today, that means saving $500 between now and the release date. I've played with enough of the EDGE iPhones to know that waiting for pages and information to load would drive me crazy and I'd feel like I made a bad investment. I'd buy one with my tax return or "refund" but most of that money is going into savings and my student loan.

Sad thing is, when the 3G version is released, we'll still have people complaining about how the iPhone isn't fast enough. (Not saying you personally FoxyKaye, just using your post as a starting point.)

Practically no other Apple product has gotten a 33% price drop within two months of release.
True.
Asking for a $200 discount plus double the flash memory within a 4 month span is asking for a bit too much. The 16GB version is still cheaper than what the 8GB cost just a few short months ago.
It has been 5 months since the price dropped & 7 months 7 days since the iPhone came out. But you are right it is still cheaper than what the 8GB originally cost.

So in the iPhone and the Touch you get a 16GB memory upgrade for $100. Why, oh, why does a 64GB drive in the MacBook Air cost $1000 for 64GB? In fact, the entire 32GB+device (Touch) costs $499. What gives?

Buy the $399 ssd drive yourself and install it. Looks doable. I think they sell them at newegg.com

Then, for $600 less, you'll also have a backup hard drive.

So the logical course of action is to buy a product with which I will never be happy, that doesn't really fit my needs, and/or falls short of my expectations? Gotcha.

I guess that adds a whole new meaning to the "Apple premium." IOW, shut your pie hole and be grateful that Uncle Steve gives you the opportunity to blow hundreds to thousands of dollars on ANYTHING. After all, he knows your needs better than you...

I agree, this is an awesome step forward. 16gb is necessary w/ the new apps coming. All we need now is 3G.

I'll buy 2 at $599 or maybe even $699 if they had 16 or 32gb w/ 3G. (provided that AT&T doesn't markedly increase the service rates.

Good Apple.

Focus on January and February....thats what the suits care about.

That's what I was getting at. Almost a 50% loss in stock value, even with the recent overall trend has got to spook investors, and probably Jobs himself given his stake in the company. I'd release what I had as it looks like they've been looking for the bottom after no real heavy hitter was announced at MacWorld. Might be a good time to buy some AAPL?
