I just bought an 8gb iPhone on Saturday. Opened it, haven't set it up yet or even turned it on!

Called AT&T, they are enforcing the 10% restocking fee. So for $151.09 more (8% tax here) I can get the 16gb iPhone. Hard to say whether it's worth it or not.

Reguardless it's obvious that this is the upgrade to hold us over for a while. 3g is coming, we all know that but it's not coming in June. Potentially the end of the year. Apple will wanna make as much as they can off the $499 16gb iPhone.

OR they're hoping to ditch the 8GB models, will drop the 16GB to $399, then release 32GB model with 3G for $499. People who paid $600 a year ago will burn Steve Jobs at the stake.

I am almost in the same boat. Spent 399 on a 16 gb touch on saturday, theres a $39 return fee if opened. So for $140ish with out tax i could, upgrade to 32 gbs, i dont know if its worth it or not?

OMG... did you actually mean that or are you just kidding???

Americans... Being a canadian, I love visiting your country but sometimes I just wanta smack everyone of ya!

No I'm not kidding. How many of the people reading this thread know what£499 is equal to?? If you're going to b*tch about this so called international price gouging...give me something to equate to that MOST readers understand.

And im done.

32 GB... wow!!! Very nice! And that 16 GB iPhone is great, too.

Does this mean the 3G iPhone will have a 32 GB option this summer??? That is just awesome... that thing is going to sell like crazy if so.

In the meantime, it may finally be time for me to ditch my iPod photo for a Touch...

do it...you know you want to ;)

Damn Canadians, they assume everyone of us just as bad as the worst American they've encountered.

That's why I hate all Canadians.

Well when you hear those kind of comments by americans time and time and time again... then ya... you kinda start to generalize.

I was on a plane to mexico, flying from the US, and I was reading the magazine that comes with the flight and I saw this ad, it had a big typical picture of santa clause on it. He was riding in his sliegh and had the gifts in the back... a very typical picture... but there was something strange about it... Santa had 2 (not one, but two) american flags on his sliegh. I was shocked? Why to americans think that someone like santa clause (which exisits in many differnt countries) exists solely for their own amusment, why would he only have american flags in there... why not a canadain flag, a british flag, etc?

I mean... is the North pole in alaska or something?

Sorry... rant over. Flame away!

32GB iPhone with 3G for $499... I am doubting this unless they drop the price of the 32GB iPod touch which is also $499. It is hard to tell where Apple is going with this. I originally thought it would be the 8GB version with EDGE and a 16GB version wit 3G, but that is obviously not the case. With the current prices, I think a 32GB iPhone w/ 3G would go up to $550 or $600 and the 16GB with EDGE would stick around for for$399. Who knows though.

I just bought the 8 gig iPhone a month ago. At first I thought "rats, I could have waited". But then, checking the price of what I bought, I realize that this is really great news.

The quiet intro of the 16 gig model at the old price point means (imo) that the new 3g models will come at this price point and at this capacity.

By introducing this quietly, I think Apple is saying "this isn't anything new, just the usual upgrade in speed or capacity. It'll happen from time to time."

Funny how people complain about these things.

The real question now is this: do you go ahead and buy the new 16 gig model knowing newer models are coming within the year? My answer is the same one I had a month ago: if you need a new phone go ahead and buy. If you really don't need a new phone . . .

Maybe because it was being published in the US??

So in the iPhone and the Touch you get a 16GB memory upgrade for $100. Why, oh, why does a 64GB drive in the MacBook Air cost $1000 for 64GB? In fact, the entire 32GB+device (Touch) costs $499. What gives?

Solid state drive vs. flash memory.

They're not the same.

Excellent! Returned my Christmas present 8gb Touch last week and didn't have to pay a restocking fee at Target. Was waiting until my Verizon contract is up this month to get an iPhone since free wi-fi is rare where I live and Edge was quicker than I expected when I tested it out. Now I can get a 16gb iPhone. Nice.

I *was* hot-and-bothered about 3g until I checked out the ATT coverage map and saw that it stops about 10 miles from where I live... Plus, the monthly contract is expensive enough. I wonder how much extra 3g will cost per month?

Also waiting to buy a MBP so Apple if you could release those next Tuesday that would be cool. ;)

T-mobile cheaper then AT & T

and i'm getting one in t-minus 9 days!!!! (t-mobile contract dies on the 14th!!!):apple::D:apple::D:apple::D:apple::D:apple::D:apple::D:apple:

I hate to spoil your joy but for 39.99 a month you can use your iphone with t-mobile versus 79.99 and add 9.99 for 1000 text versus 200. Now unlimited nites and weekends. No need for edge too slow it's frustrating so save your money about $30 bucks less a month that's $360 a year almost a new iphone per year :D

That is assuming that new models are coming within the year. There has been no official announcement and for all we know this storage update was made because there was a setback in the development of a 3G model. The way I look at it, with the upgrade today, there won't be another update to iPhone for probably another 8-10 months. If Apple updates the iPhone again in only a few months, I think buyers will lose faith in Apple and decide to go with other phones because of the constant unannounced updates.

Okay I'll bite. Why do you think that one advert that you saw represents the thoughts and feelings of all american people? It was some stupid ad agency, not the collective american people who made that ad. I think a lot of Americans would find that just as ridiculous as you do. Maybe you shouldn't generalize as much.

Wow!

I was just kidding about hating Canadians. I though the sarcasm was obvious. A statement like "all", I thought, would give that away.

Guess not.

Sorry I offended you.

I guess there will always be someone that can't figure out the online currency calculators. They probably are from Boston or something most of the time. Not all Americans are that way. Actually, I think it's a loud few, for example, our president.

Sarcasm -- AND, I think it's horrible that there were picture of american flags in the magazine on the plane you took from the USA... I find that funny that bothers you.

Cheers - My flame and apology.

Dude, if you represent us Canadians, please learn to spell. That's appalling. Canadians critize Americans for not being able to spell but looks like you're no better...

Joshua.

If you own a DVD-burner, does that mean you should have the freedom to create illegal DVDs for sale on the black market?
Not at all and frankly the two are not even comparable. You are talking about stealing another's work where the Jailbreakers are simply using their device in a more productive manner. There is nothing illegal about running code you write on your computer nor is it illegal to run somebody else's if they put it out for public consumption.

I actually find your attempt to confuse and color the issue, with something that everybody knows is illegal, highly offensive.
There are tons of smartphones out there. Iffn you don't like what Apple has, go get a BlackBerry or Palm

Actually there are very few open smart phones out there. Nor does it look like it will get better in that regards real quick. The only good thing is that people are starting to get very peeved about this corporate exploitation. Further some carriers are responding SLoowly.

While the 32 GB iPod Touch is very nice, I wished Apple had released a 16 GB iPod nano. That would be a nice little player that could have competed against the Creative ZEN player (16 GB model).

Well I never said I could spell. ;)

I guess the reason why seeing an american flag on a worldly icon, on a american ad (did that all make sense?) offended me was... usually in canada we don't label things as Canadain or not... we don't put canadain flags to say that something is canadian or not. And I was in the UK and Mexico (briefly i'll admit) and it didn't seem like they do that either? (correct me if i'm wrong on that).

I guess I find it odd when americans feel the need to label things as american when they really could apply to any part of the world.

But hey, If its only a small handful of americans to do things like that... then hey, i'll apologize, sorry for offending people.

Could you please explain what the difference is?
I didn't know there was one...

That is because there isn't a difference except for possibly speed grades. What a SSD does have is a controller chip to interface the FLash to the chosen I/O bus and possibly handle wear leveling.

Currently I see he price of SSD to be one of the biggest rip offs in computing. Yeah it is more expensive than standard disk drives but there is a lot of profit being taken right now. Maybe the manufactures see this as the way to recoup their development expenses.

All I know is that I'm not to please with the price increase of the 32GB Touch. Luckily I'm waiting for the SDK to come before I decide to buy into a Touch product. IT gives me some time to think and budget.
