The fact that the 32GB drive iPod is $499 makes one really think the 64GB SSD in the MacBook Air is way over priced!
Um, no. The pricing is not linear at the high end. Rather, it goes up exponentially as you get to very high densities. 64GB is much, much more expensive than 32GB. Look at what it costs to get a solid-state drive from newegg, and you'll find the pricing right on target.

Apples products are CHEAP compared to the CRAP out there.

If you arent smart enough to buy a good product, I feel sorry for you.

If I were to buy an iPhone in May, before they release 3G, and they release an iPhone with 3G in say June or July, will I be able to return my iPhone for the newer one and just pay, say, a 10% restocking fee?

A 64GB SSD is different than straight-up flash memory.

Sure it is, they both use NAND flash. SSD just has more NAND chips that helps increase the performance. That is what you are paying for. Image of the inside of a SSD. Image of the inside of a CF card. Looks similar to me .

Quoted myself above as a potential rebuttal.

I had a new iPhone 8GB 1.1.1 that I bought a while back. I was waiting for my t-mobile contract to expire next week, but I couldn't wait so I decided to software unlock. Instead of using the phone, which is brand new, I posted on ebay right now, so I can buy the 16GB with 1.1.3 and just get a contract with AT&T and not worry about hacking and jailbreaking. If anyone is interested in the item to bid or buy send me a message through here.

And and AAPL stock continues to fall...

...which has zero to do with this announcement.

Look at the markets, they tanked overall - every stock on my watch list dropped today, and most more than AAPL did.

I'm not the expert on this, but wouldn't wireless sync for an ipod/ iphone take forever if you have tons of songs? It takes long enough while it is sitting in the dock, especially for movies. Just ask'n. It would be cool though.

Not if you're only swapping out a few things as opposed to emptying all of it and refilling. Wireless synching would be great for things like short podcasts, and updating smart playlists that use play count or last played. Heck, I'd be happy if they had a setting to just delete played material to get it off the ipod. Best case would be if smart playlists could actually update on the ipod itself without needing to sync, but I don't expect that any time soon.

Great

Bought two iPhones exactly one day too early to take advantage of the 14-day return window. I'm going to saw my own hand off now.

I knew this thread would be full of whiners, especially those that made a purchase at Christmas, but I knew it was going to happen. Everyone knew that they would spec the iPhone up to 16 GB before the second gen comes out. Now what is awesome is now the second gen iPhone will probably have 32 GB :) I didn't see the 32 GB thing coming I admit. I thought it would be too expansive still. Well, I am still waiting to get my iPhone 2nd Gen. This is torture lol.

Anyone still think they will come out with an iPhone Nano, or will they just have the 2nd Gen be the flagship and drop the price of the current one??? Or maybe both, but the Nano won't be here for another year or so?

Sorry, but you should pay closer attention to the rumors. It was no secret that they would bump the iPhone up to 16GB after the holidays before they release the 2nd Gen mid year or so.

There are several posts in this thread to this effect.

The iPhone and iPT DON'T USE SSDs....

They use raw NAND memory soldered to the logic board. There is no "drive" to it. There is no removable module, or un-plug-able casing. There isn't a SATA or PATA interface, at least not via a detachable cable.

The MBA uses a moving-platter hard drive. It, like any other compatible machine, can take advantage of a solid-state drive. Which has the same NAND chips inside, but is in a metal case much the same size as a hard drive, that plugs right in to the bus and power cables, and sits in the same retention and anti-shock chassis within the computer. That is removable or swappable with some work to disassemble the machine.

There is no hard drive case within the iPT, or iPhone's outer shell, it isn't removable or swappable memory, and it can't be transferred to a computer.

----

This didn't help me decide which one to buy, though. 32GB is great, and I love the iPT, and the new app availability is just what I was hoping would become available.

But, I would like off-Wifi internet connectivity, and not to have to carry a separate cell phone in addition. 3G would be better, and stereo bluetooth would be very welcome for a device that has a major function of being an iPod, as well as a phone, both for phone ready stereo bluetooth headphones, and car bluetooth integration.

My nice little Samsung A737 has both 3G and stereo bluetooth. It is a nice little phone, but lacks Mac sync compatibility, and isn't as downright fantastic as the iPhone interface and capabilities, software wise.

16 GB on the iPhone is very welcome, but doesn't address those two points. I wonder if the Rev 2 iPhone upcoming is any more distant in the future, due to it being up-rated now. If Rev. 2 was just around the corner, I would have thought they would have announced 16GB with that, at the same time. So, now hardware changes may be 6-months or more away.

So my choice still remains... either a compromise of two devices to carry, one being a my current phone, and a cool new 32GB iPT, or a a slightly different compromise mix of features, in a 16GB iPhone in a single very good device. And whether I should buy sooner, and try to upgrade later, or just wait. (and potentially Rev. 2 of the iPhone may STILL not have stereo bluetooth.)

Wow, no one saw this coming today. Everyone thought it was coming at the end of the month with the SDK. 16gb isn't a big deal. It's only a boost in capacity. If they had a 16gb upgrade with 3G, then it's something to clamor about. 8gb is a decent amount of room for the music, pics and the free tv shows I subscribe to. 16GB would be better, but not worth selling this one and getting a new phone.

My wife loves my iPhone. I'll give this one to her as soon as soon as I can get a larger capacity phone with 3G.

THIS JUST IN:

"Apple lowers price of all three iPod touch's by one hundred US dollars - gives fifty dollar rebate to early adopters."

Hmmm... I don't know if I would buy the new iPhone at that price. I would wait 3-6 months to see if Apple is going to drop the price again!

i really don't get comments like this, you obviously thought that 8GB was enough, else you wouldn't have bought it.

i have an 8GB iphone and while mine isn't the "best" there is, i haven't lost any money and have had 2 1/2 months usage of the best device i've ever owned

stop whining, technology especially moves forward quickly

Wirelessly posted (Treo: Opera/9.50 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.0.9800/264; U; en))

I've been looking to get an iPhone, and this is just a tease. I know v.2 is just around the corner, but I want it now! This just makes me want it more!

(And yes, its a WANT, not need. My blackberry does almost everything I need it too. I just can't stand the calendar!)
