But I wonder — if it was feasible to implement Touch ID under the screen, would they have done it or not? Was FaceID the mechanism they always wanted, or was it the only one they could practically implement on an edge-to-edge display?

From all the previous rumors and rumor sources since the beginning of the year, it seems clear that Apple originally wanted an under-display TouchId solution. It just wasn't ready in time.

I think it's impressive that Apple had Face Id as a backup solution in their pocket, even if it was originally just going to be a secondary choice (or not included at all).

Bet there was a lot of sleepless nights for the Face Id team recently :D

Yeah, the iPhone X is pretty underwhelming to be honest. And as someone who has used Windows Phone for the last 1/2 decade, I really don't see things like "swipe up to unlock" to be revolutionary. In fact, I find the touch to wake to be more of a pain than a good thing.
Cool! So when's that new Windows Phone keynote?

So what's so special about this thing that you can't do with an iPhone 6s or 8? Cool, it has a 5.8" screen. But it still runs iOS which means you can't do many useful things with it and it's treated and used in pretty much the same way as an iPhone 6s. A 2 year old device.

"Unless you have an identical twin" you see, TouchID doesn't care about that since even identical twins have different finger prints. So there's that. Now we're waiting for a price.

edit aaaaaand it's $1000. $1000 for a ****ing phone. What a joke.
I'll be honest, not very impressed so far and I use iPhone 6s still.

Surely the display is gorgeous but the design is still very similar. I also think it's large.

Looks like LG came out with the edge to edge first, and Samsung came out with the facial recognition first in the S8.

Though not a surprise as Samsung and LG are making the displays for Apple.

I scrolled through many many comments. Yours is the qui
The S8 only has 2D recognition that can be beaten by a photo. Did you even watch the keynote?

Yeb. S8 is a joke. Seriously Samsung is a very lazy sales-oriented company.

If u cannot tell the difference between face id and stupid useless Samsung face recognition, then go buy the hideous samsung s8 with fingerprint scan in the back. U will learn something soon

So much negativity here. Yes, FaceID failed at first but TouchID still fails occasionally. It took Apple several iOS upgrades to get TouchID to work as well as it does. FaceID will be no different. Good grief guys.

I know, and it is the reason I'm thinking to either buy the iPhone 8 or wait for the next generation.

Notch inside the screen is fine. But the top of the screen (on either side of the Notch) should be persistent status bar, black. Indistinguishable from being part of the Notch except that the info displayed is animated.

Why they didn't do this is beyond me.

Nothing a software update can't fix, but it may unbalance the phone with a larger black bar than the bottom.

My thinking is that they intended to announce ip 8 and plus today along with x so that they could try to persuade people to get ip 8 and plus and decrease the demand on x.

Whoops. Looks like Face ID isn't quite as seamless as Touch ID.

Yeah, I'm sure Tim and the rest were cringing big time at that moment. The worst possible moment to fail. I was a little worried about FaceID before this and I'm a little more worried now. I know integrated TouchID in the display exists in the Apple lab and I'm guessing it's plan B or even destined to make a return next year as another option in case FaceID isn't as reliable as Apple was expecting it to be. I hope they get it right before release and FaceID doesn't become a black eye for Apple.

Noone is impressed by that ugly thing
LOL. I'm impressed. I hope that Face ID will work better by the time it comes out, but in terms of everything else, I am very happy. The only complaint (and it's not really a complaint, I just wish it was cheaper) is the price, but it's Apple, I knew what I was in for. It's like how long will it take before I stop seeing people come on here after a new release and say something is absurdly expensive, just to see it sell insanely well.

SKIPPING. I'll drop $1,000 next year when they've figured out how to remove the ugly notch and improve face ID. Those are the upgrades coming. Stuff that should have been perfected before it was even released. Smh.
