Why does Apple have a such high markup for iPhone when they literally have billions of dollars in the bank. Do they really except the average person to spend $1000 on a phone, even $799 is still a stretch.
The "average" person worldwide has an income of $243 a month (2013 Gallup poll data). They're not selling to the average person, they're selling to people who can afford the product, which is still a large enough group to make them very wealthy.

For all of you who didn't get what actually happened; FaceID did NOT fail in the presentation. Just like TouchID, if you haven't used it for a few hours, then you have to unlock it with your Passcode. And that's exactly what happened in the demo (it even gave that message on the screen of the iPhone; that you must enter your passcode to use FaceID.) Always so much FUD here anytime a new Apple Product is released...

It also displays when touch id (and presumably face id) fails. I find it impossible to believe they didn't take into account the timeout especially when it worked on the backup device.

Is the $999 starting price really that big an issue for people? I got the iP7+ 256gb last year, and that was $969, and I had to wait quite some time for it to arrive even though I ordered very soon after presales opened. There will be plenty of people that find the money to get it, even some of those here complaining about it.

But ugh...that notch is ugly. I really can't believe they are leaving it in for videos.

Also, I'll need to go back and look at the moment of the FaceID fiasco. Yes, the message did look like the one after you haven't used your phone in a while, but you also get a similar message when TouchID has failed too many times. Is there a way to differentiate?

Robbery? Law enforcement?
Robbery: Okay, so your phone is sitting on a table or something and a person snatches it, slides up, points it at you. You just sit there? No, you're trying to grab your phone back, not look at it.

LE: Ignoring the legal argument for lack of a warrant, they can just stick your finger to TouchID if they are violating your rights anyways by forcing you to look at your phone without closing your eyes or looking away. This doesn't even count the new iOS11 SOS feature to lock the phone down.

Does this mean next year's iPhone 9 will be crappier than this iPhone X?

I mean they are clearly calling this an iPhone TEN, not X or edition.

iPhone X looks great. Of course MR forum users **** all over it like they do for every single Apple device ever.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, my friend. In the iPhone 8 announcement, some were disappointed and wanted Apple to shut up about it and get to the iPhone X..

When they did, the masses were underwhelmed. It's an underwhelming device unfortunately. But who am I? Vote with your wallet. I, personally am not impressed this time around and will avoid this release like the plague.

I also call BS on their claim a face is more unique than a finger print, how often do hear I seen someone that looks just like you.

I have always thought finger prints are all different

You say you call "BS" - but I am inclined to believe Apple when they said that their fingerprint Touch-ID has a 1:50,000 chance of being fooled by someone else's fingerprint and that the Face-ID has 1:1,000,000 chance.

How do you know that their claims are not true?

Remember, they are projecting 30,000 dots on your 3D face, and possibly doing all sorts of dynamic measurements on top of that to authenticate using Face ID. They also have a neural network running in a secure enclave on the phone.

How many points does the Touch-ID use? Probably enough, but who knows enough to call BS on anything at all?

If Apple tells you it is 20X more secure, it probably is. That's what I think.

Anyway - use a long passcode combined with Face-ID and you'll be OK.

If you ever want to deactivate Face-ID or Touch-ID for that matter, I think you can press the power button 5 times in a row and it will push you back to having to type in a passcode.

Whatever works for rapid authentication is good - I am for it 100%

It will probably be awesome.

Yeah, but two hours of what? It was a really random way to say it has more battery life. If it is just standby time, I would hardly say it is much different.

I agree. The whole presentation seemed to lack a lot of in-depth information about the devices. The teleprompter also seemed to be on the fritz.

Apple announced the iPhone X during its special event at Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park, Cupertino today. Apple CEO Tim Cook said the iPhone X was "the future of the smartphone" and will "set the path for technology for the next decade".

The iPhone X, pronounced "ten", features a 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED edge-to-edge display with 2436 x 1125 resolution and 458ppi, including HDR, Dolby Vision, HDR10, and True Tone support.

The device uses touch-based gestures to interact with iOS 11 in lieu of a home button, and is powered by a next-generation A11 Bionic neural processor that handles world tracking and scene recognition, backed up by a GPU that enables graphics at 60 frames per second. The handset comprises a glass and stainless steel design, which features a front-facing camera with advanced facial recognition and authentication technology called Face ID.

The Face ID authentication process utilizes the 7-megapixel front-facing TrueDepth camera along with a dot projector, infrared camera, and flood illuminator, in order to accurately map and recognize the user's face, so that it can be used to authenticate Apple Pay and gain access to secure apps.

There's also a redesigned, vertically aligned dual-lens TrueDepth 12-megapixel rear camera, featuring Quad-LED True Tone flash with dual optical image stabilization, while Portrait mode with Portrait Lighting on both the front and rear cameras offers dramatic studio lighting effects for creating portraits with a shallow depth-of-field effect in five different lighting styles.

Elsewhere, the iPhone X's glass back supports wireless inductive charging that works with Qi-certified third-party charging devices, including pads offered by Mophie and Belkin. Apple also gave a sneak peek of AirPower, an Apple-designed wireless charging accessory coming in 2018, which offers an active charging area to simultaneously charge up to three devices, including Apple Watch Series 3 and a new optional wireless charging case for AirPods.

The iPhone X is fast-charge capable, while its surgical steel band is said to enhance its water and dust resistance. The handset will be available in space gray and silver colors.

The iPhone X also supports new animated emoji, or "Animoji", thanks to the phone's new 3D sensing capability, enabling users to create custom 3D animated emoji based on facial expressions picked up by the camera. The new A11 Bionic chip is also tuned for augmented reality experiences made using Apple's ARKit software framework.

The iPhone X comes in 64GB and 256GB storage capacities, priced from $999. The iPhone X will be available to pre-order from October 27 and will ship on November 3.
