So... will cops/FBI/your mom just be able to unlock your phone by pointing it at your face?

When Touch ID fails a couple times, it'll often ask for your passcode to enable it. So we don't necessarily know what happened there. Since I'm not buying the stupid thing, I'm calling it Face ID fail.

Am I the only one who was hoping Apple would win me back over from the S8? Where is the huge leap forward with iPhone X? What did I miss?

update:

Letting it soak in...camera, gestures, animated emojis,...hrmmm...break through? IDK. Will need to see the quality of the photos compared to a DSLR.

iris scan. Have u used it?
Haha that is the true joke.

Iris scan requires that the phone have to be in exact angle. The only reasonable use cases is to protect extremely sensitive file (that you are willing to go extra mile to protect it)

You have not try it yet. Right?

the S8 has the iris scanner as the most secure way to unlock.

So, I'm ambivalent.

Pros: The screen is a big improvement, especially with the new gesture control. Face-ID may prove to be better than touch-ID. Wireless charging is a long time coming as well.

Negatives: This isn't edge-to-edge, and will look like dated garbage when that arrives (soon?)...it doesn't look great today with the cut out. Face-ID may not be great. From all accounts, they were going to do finger print under the glass, as well, but weren't able to--they may just offer both next year. Delay sucks. Worried that first year OLED screen (probably not an issue as Samsung has been using it for years).

Every day in my car when it is in my pocket. I hit the Touch ID and unlock and summon Siri to override my car Bluelink. This allows me to dictate and listen to messages. FaceID can't be used in my situation, unless I pull the phone out and look at it when driving which I very much do not want to do.
Yeah, it could be an unnecessary distraction which could be dangerous to someone driving. Another incentive not to use your phone while driving.;)

Apple could announce a god damn cure for cancer and Mac Rumors commenters would be "not convinced".
But they haven't and they never will. And that's ok. You have to understand that some isheep who've been on this train for 10 years are starting to remove the rose tinted glasses and see these companies for who they really are. It's more liberating than you realize. And criticism and bashing are 2 different things.

Stop pledging unwavering fealty to these companies like they owe you something. WE have to stop doing that. This conference was underwhelming and downright disappointing. If you like the phone, fine get it. But if people have complaints (a popular one at that) about the design aesthetics or whatever, that's ok.

It's not "nice" that eyeglasses are supported, it's essential. No one wants to take their glasses off to use a phone.

Do we know that sunglasses aren't supported? It's possible the infrared will suffice, for at least some sunglasses.

Apple could not possibly support the infinite amount of sunglass styles without degrading security.

Dark and reflective sunglasses can be problematic.

Authentication could likely support translucent sunglass styles.

The notch itself doesn't bother me for app use, but they should've blacked out that area when video is playing. It is an oled screen after all so it would be true black and it wouldn't look as weird as a big hole at the edge of your content.

Exactly!!! I posted the same but people are only writing, not reading.
If Touch ID fails, it ask for the passcode to ENABLE it again.
Until you enter the passcode once, Touch ID will not even verify the print.
Same with Face ID.
Thank you for noting the same thing ;)

The notched eyebrows can easily be rectified with an iOS update that offers an option to blacken that entire edge. It may also need to scale the image display to keep elements from being truncated. The point is that as long as a software solution is available, the overall product form factor is not compromised.
I wouldn't assume there will be a software update to fix this. Apple's response will be that you're looking at it wrong.
