"This is the FIRST OLED display GREAT enough to be in an IPHONE" - phil schiller. 9/12/2017

-made by Samsung....left over pile of old super amoled displays.

Gott give Phil the World's most full of dung marketing genius award.
Margin is all that matters. They will sell millions of units.

I like the design of it and portrait mode for front camera but this isn't a must buy or early adopter device for me. I'm fine with my 7plus. I will see what Apple has in store next year to see if the X will be worth it then.

Your old phone still does what it does, but if you have the coin - upgrade as soon as possible. Remember, we all use these things every day of our lives. Enjoy the latest and greatest - life is too short to pinch pennies over essential life enhancing things like this. Just my opinion.

Yes, true is: life is too short to care a lot about a phone

Why is there an iphone 8 when this could have been that? This isn't that special. If it were actually edge-to-edge I'd understand the special/premium release. This is a fine a phone, but is it really that much different than a Samsung?

It’s not really even as good as a Samsung is it? At least the S8 has those curved edges which look sort of modern. This is just another flat screen with pretty thick bezels all round...

I'm pretty sure Face ID didn't actually 'fail'. It looks like the iPhone just needed the passcode to activate the feature - same as TouchID. With that said, it's still a little embarrassing.
Again ... if Touch ID fails it will ask zou for the passcode to enable it again.
Until then, no fingerprint is even verified.

Same with Face ID.
So, it did fail.

Why does Apple have a such high markup for iPhone when they literally have billions of dollars in the bank. Do they really except the average person to spend $1000 on a phone, even $799 is still a stretch.

They are a business, they are not your friend.

They are there to part you from your money.

No. If Touch ID fails it will tell you to enter the passcode to ENABLE Touch ID again.
The same happened here.

FaceID failed. It asked for the Code to let you use it again.
People. Read.

My mistake. I was aware it also asks if touch ID fails, but I thought the message was the same regardless of it failing or restarting.

The way it looks now is just beyond me and I can't believe Apple of all companies have released a product this unpolished...

They haven't released it, it has been announced. There are many details about the device missing (weight, how to use mission control, etc.). I presume there's going to be some extra info nearer the release date.

Edit: missing words.

How is 256 too big? I was hoping for 128, 256, 512. I have 128 iPhone 6 now and I get warnings about it being full all the time. I really wanted 512! Heck I would love a TB!

Next year if the rumors hold true. Same form factor, some old big bezel display, a fraction better camera and a fraction speedier. Same high price
I actually think $349 is a very good price. The bezels are big on the top and bottom, just like every other phone until the X. And I actually don't have a problem with bezels. It's where my fingertips go when I'm holding it.

I'm not sure he'd have gone for the "You now invoke Siri with the button you use to turn the phone off" either?

I'd expect more of a "Force Touch where the Home Button should be to invoke Siri" method?

Apple used to do so well with UI* and pushing UI *consistency* across OS, Apps, generations of devices, etc.. Now you have multiple ways to unlock the phone and invoke Siri between iPhones launched on the same day?

Maybe I'm officially old, but this is just seems annoying to me?

* Yes, the Apple UI consistency ship sailed away long long ago, but that doesn't mean that stuff like this doesn't still make your brain itch if you remember the good ole days where we made fun of Microsoft for this sort of crap...
Where else is Apple supposed to place the microphone, front facing camera and Face ID sensors other the the top of the screen ?

I dunno, Touch ID under the display would have been enough for me. If you're having to touch the display anyway with Face ID, I'd argue it's not really that much more convenient.

I've been wrong plenty of times though and I'm frequently disappointed until I sleep on it and try it for myself, or read what early adopters have said. So don't take my initial thoughts as gospel.

But I wonder — if it was feasible to implement Touch ID under the screen, would they have done it or not? Was FaceID the mechanism they always wanted, or was it the only one they could practically implement on an edge-to-edge display?

I think they're still ironing out some production issues with integrated TouchID (TouchID version 3?) because I honestly think they would've included it as "support" for FaceID if they could've this year.

Yeah he was sloppy and nervous enough to provide FUD for months, it remind me of the introduction of the touch id era of silly comments
