So why failed with one phone and worked flawlessly with the second phone? One was just restarted? It was the wrong phone? Software is still buggy, we don’t know, you don’t know, about we try it first and talk later?

The second phone worked flawlessly? Look again, he held the phone in an awkward position and it still unlocked slower than touch id.

dear people who are saying Media will be cut out with the Notch! other than content taken on IPHONE X , no it will not. hands on video proves this

that has been my complain about the notch since the first rumor, and i hope if they do black out the sides of the notch they also put a black bar on the bottom of the phone to keep the symmetry.
So basically people want bezels back again. Then just buy a 8.

"turn off to increase security and make it harder to unlock using an image or video"
"make it harder"
"harder"

Samsung themselves acknowledge it can be fooled

Samsung has acknowledged that the facial recognition technology is actually not intended to be a security feature, but another way to go to the Home screen as opposed to Slide to Unlock. "Facial recognition is a convenient action to open your phone – similar to the 'swipe to unlock' action," said a Samsung spokesperson in a statement sent to BusinessInsider.

It's not the same feature and it can be fooled with a picture. How about you give it a rest now. Samsung will be ok without you white knighting them. Promise.

My thoughts after watching the iPhone X presentation

  • Love the edge-to-edge screen, hate the notch at the top.
  • One of the main selling points of a $1,000 phone in a keynote should not be animated emojis.
  • I'll have to see how well FaceID works in the real world before deciding if I want to buy, so no preorder for me this year.
  • I love the wireless charging mat.
  • I'm confused on what gesture you use to access Notification Center and Today widgets while in app.
  • It will take some time to get used to the new gestures to do things like access Siri and multitasking, and I wonder how often those will be accidentally activated while doing other things on the phone.
  • The edge-to-edge display, better battery, and better camera are the main selling points for me for the over my current 128 GB iPhone 7, but I don't know if that is enough to warrant a $500 jump in pricing from a 128 GB 7 to a 256 GB iPhone 8.
Wireless charging mat still has one wire

Will I ever get away from that outlet.

This shouldn't even be an option you can toggle on and off. Either your facial recognition works or it doesn't. Theirs wasn't reliable enough so they added a feature that made it less secure...which means it doesn't work. Facial recognition should be both reliable AND secure otherwise it is not good enough to be used for unlocking a device, making payments, and accessing a person's sensitive information.

I disagree - it's not greed. There is a lot of high technology in there. They want to keep the company strong so a 40% profit margin ensures that they can continue to bring us the latest and greatest.

You might be happiest with a used phone, or the iPhone SE model if you want to "save money" - but I don't think you really do save money in the long run using old equipment.

Any cell phone is a bargain when you look at the tech in it. Get the best value for the dollar and your time spent by getting the latest and greatest as soon as you can.

Newflash it's not the latest and greatest. It's,all tech that has been used in other phones for many years.

Apple just charge so much for it because they drip feed their customers.

Watched the entire keynote earlier. Have to say I'm more impressed by the Watch more than anything else. I was waiting for it to be untethered to the phone and I'm glad I held out. I'll most likely get one, but maybe not at launch.

Been holding on to my 6+ and was looking to upgrade this year expecting a big leap for the 10-year anniversary. My impressions are mixed. I was hoping for a re-design, but what was shown instead is kind of meh. I like the X with the glass and stainless steel (and no white bezels!), but that notch??? Basic design should have clicked in someone's head and said, "hey, just run the black strip continuous in one line - it will look better to the eye. The hill/notch/bump is distracting." And I'm not sold on FaceID. Cool concept technologically, but I will have to see. TouchID is much easier and I'm sure they will get it to work eventually. And Animojis? Guess it's a first step for the many uses that will come with FaceID... but $1150????

Don't want an 8+ because I'll feel like I have the same phone, although the camera - that I desperately need upgraded due to horrendous low light performance - should be a marked improvement. Was hoping to go full screen this time around. Like the improvements I'd be getting overall...

Just torn overall and will have to consider which phone I'll go for. May even wait a bit to decide instead of jumping on launch - and that will definitely be a first for me.

Apple decides SUNGLASSES don't exist.

"If your eyes are closed or you're looking away it's not gonna unlock." - Phil Schiller
This. Anyone know if sunglasses are a problem, what about a hat, or even something like a hardhart? I know a full faced helmet is a nogo. Means having to type in a password to enter in these situations? Makes you lean towards a less secure password of you are typing in all the time now. I understand why they moved in this direction but I don't know that it is the most user friendly route. Maybe you can store these other "faces" we use like you could fingerprints?

looks alright but I would actually prefer touch ID to face ID. Is this me getting old???

But really isn't touch ID easier? I dont have to look at the phone with touch ID.

And apple pay seems easier with touch ID.

I hate people that can't embrace the future, but honestly, is there not a serious market for both touch ID and face ID?

ugh, i might really be one of those "no upgrade for me" type people, if this is the future of the iPhone.

The s8 has a setting to ensure a picture or video wont unlock the phone.

The UI certainly doesn't claim that it ensures anything, just reduces the risk. The problem there is that the S8 looks to only have a single camera, which means no good ability to 3D map features. Machine learning can help address some of that gap, but you do really want as much data about what is being presented as a face to you as possible.

The reality is that something like Intel's RealSense 3D camera along with Windows Hello already does a better job than the S8 when it comes to facial detection and avoiding security risks inherent to facial recognition. A lot of that built on top of the Kinect camera work that Microsoft did.

To me, the impressive part is that Apple managed to ship a miniaturized depth-sensing dual-camera setup of this quality. Based on what I've seen in the industry over the last decade of trying to get motion capture and depth sensing working through cheap cameras, there's pretty much no way the S8's facial recognition will keep up with what Apple just announced. Especially considering Samsung burned their sensor space to make room for the iris sensor instead, and they themselves rank their facial recognition below their iris scanner and fingerprint scanner, recommending it only for convenience. And even their iris scanner can be defeated with a photo and a contact lens. I don't think I can understate how important the depth information is for being able to shut down the easy attacks on this sort of security.

That said, I do think Apple should provide more details on their facial recognition work in their security documents for the more paranoid of us. At least on paper this is reaching the bar it has to reach in order to make this fly, but there's still some uncertainty. Especially with how the secure enclave / etc interact with it.

This would've never EVER been released on Jobs' watch. It's clearly evident that they couldn't get the TouchID tech right in a device where the screen covers the entirety of the front, so they abandoned ship to go down the full screen route. FaceID demo was a complete mess, and I just cant see the "simple" factor Apple was known for with this.

Anyone else miss when Apple didn't intentionally screw their customers with iPhone storage? It used to be 1x, 2x and 4x. Now it's just 1x and 4x. I don't come close to needing 256 GB for a phone, but I'd love to have more than 64 GB. Leaning toward the iPhone 8 at these stupid prices. Considering I upgrade every 2 years, $1000+ is a bit too much to ask I think. Plus the X doesn't launch for another 2 months.

You’re missing something, and that’s my point. I don’t care that There’s extra screen. I think it’s cool. But a full video that goes edge to edge is having portion cut out.

They need to add some sort of artificial limit to how wide to draw images and videos so that nothing gets cut off.
I agree. I never even imagined this would be a thing, I just assumed when you watched a video the notches would be black and the video would extend to the cut out, not passed it. I don't know who at Apple thought blocking a portion of your video with a black box was a good idea, but someone needs to reevaluate their employment. Granted, most movies on iTunes and videos on YouTube are filmed in 16:9 so I'm sure this won't be as big an issue as we're making it, but I can guarantee that the videos you film will take advantage of the notches.

Sidenote, I like how Apple strategically demoed clips where it's darker in those areas so it was less noticeable.
