Ok so it looks like with video the notch is only present if you’re zoomed in. I assume this applies to photos too? And I assume the default would not show the notch? Would he annoying to always have to double tap the screen to hide the notch.

Is it just me that thinks this is not an edge to edge display?

    There are still borders!
That's absolutely true. I noticed those borders all around the phone when the images of the screen leaked out of China. I hoped it would be a black tape that was protecting the screen and would be removed at launch. It's so far from a full screen phone. Borders all around, while Samsung's screen actually wraps around the edge, and then the compromise they had to make at the top with all the sensors embedded in the notch. Jobs never would have approved and I don't believe Sir Jonny Ive approves either. I've been an Apple fan since 1979 and still am, but Tim Cook isn't leading this company anywhere revolutionary and they need some new blood at the top with Steve's vision.

i seriously don't understand what this has to do with anything, other than u trying to humiliate me and failing at it
Sorry you feel humiliated. That truely was not in any way my goal here. Just making note that HD, 4K, dots per inch all play role. As does viewing distance. When saying one screen looks "better" than another.
Sorry if I offended.

The difference between iPhone and other phones , is the simplicity of using iPhone. The moment you pick it up, you are able to use it instantly. This was the reason I keep upgrading iPhone for my 78 year old father, who usually is annoyed by technology. It’s hard to imagine how Apple came to a conclusion that getting rid of a homebotton would would make iPhone more user friendly. Face tech is a good step towards the future, but it shouldn’t have been a replacement of Touch ID. Did Apple find a disadvantage in using a fingerprint as security code? If not, then why mess with this winning formula. Simplicity... should have been at the top of their list. Guess I’ll have to wait till I touch iPhone x maybe I’ll understand better.

Looks good, but like all new products, I'll let everyone else beta test it.

My new iPhone will be an 8. I'll catch the next wave of 'X' iPhones.
That's where I'm at, I've always been on the S cycle.

I do hope they'll get rid of the ears, or at least have an option to make them black and reverse out the status bar text/symbols. And square it up when watching video in landscape--I don't want to see the notch, or even rounded corners for that matter.

it seems to be a transition, since you can alternately get an iPhone 8 / 8+. They still have the home button, so your father might like that better.

The rounded edges are the only thing that's a joke about this phone. When are they going to realize that flat edges=better grip?

FaceID had better be flawless. Didn't work too well during the demonstration. Te second time, he tried it, I wasn't that impressed with the speed. The idea I have to raise and authenticate is not as convenient as just touching as I raise to unlock. But I'm sure I'll get used to it. I wish he would have demonstrated how it would work on a flat table. THat's the other situation where I wouldn't want to have to raise the phone in order to access it.

They didn't dispel my one concern that ApplePay won't work without looking at the phone during the transaction. In many cases, the POST is away from my face.

EDIT: never mind -- the second demonstration with Apple Pay showed that it can be authenticated before extended to the POST. It's not as convenient as Apple Pay is with Touch ID now, but it might actually be more reliable. I do wonder how quickly the Face Authentication will time out though. That could get tricky.

Just use a passcode.

Nah, I've been a developer for 25+ years, across desktop apps, web, mobile, AR/VR, and there's _always_ some potential for a misstep in a demo, I don't care if you're a 5 person shop or Apple. As usual, Craig's recover was lighting fast :D

The cool part of the miss-step was it actually showed us that the demo was truly "real" :)

So when he first picked up the iPhone X it failed to unlock for him, then he tried again, failed again. Then he put that phone down and tried another which unlocked but it wasn't as fast as TouchID, not even close.

Dreadful. I often buy new iPhones that have big new features. iPhone 3GS, 4S, 5, 6 and 7 I purchased. But this? It's not even about price I don't care about it being $1000+. This iPhone just feels half baked. The really crappy looking camera bump that bad top notch above the screen.. and the janky Face ID.

I'm sure it'll still sell out, I'm probably in the minority with my thoughts like most of the time lol but for me this is a swing and a miss.

Odd when I watched (supposedly live earlier today 1PM EST) the presentation I saw 1 failure then Craig went to backup.

So for a mere $200 premium over the 8+, you can turn your face into an animated pile of poo. Would have been more impressed if the X stood alone and there were no 8/8+.

LMAO! 2 people just yesterday chose to ride me since I stated Craig and his team wasted time on Animated Emoji vs further improving iOS. Then when I rebutted using quick thought vs proper English they attacked me on that bs the actual content and topic. Pathetic cop-out to avoid the issue.

Sure nobody knows how much time was used to develop animated Emoji for exclusivity on iPhone X but seriously with all the advancement in the new phones the second presentation is on AniEmoji ?! Doesn't bode well for use of the technology and where it can go. I guess that's what developers are for. ;)

My argument: if programming time was equivalent - why not allow use to delete messages on AWatch to sync with iPhone and vs versa?! Why no ability to Delete All on iPhone and AW?!

Siri can talk on Watch - I get that since benefits for Accessibility but battery life suffers. Jeff is TGE smartest person at Apple according to Bloomberg. He's doing well no fluff and junk with his presentations.

Craig, I really pray Siri has leaps and bounds under your watch ⌚️. Pun intended.

Without homebutton, iPhone X is just sadly a reinvention of Blackberry Z10. This design move iPhone ten steps away from being a divice that anyone can pickup and use instantly(its what makes iPhone special). Apple should fire whoever designed iPhone X.

Looks like LG came out with the edge to edge first, and Samsung came out with the facial recognition first in the S8.

Though not a surprise as Samsung and LG are making the displays for Apple.

Pssst: Samsung had facial recognition with Galaxy S7! S8 had a lot more with Edge to Edge display.

LG features near bezel-less display the V30 even goes one better but seriously we're comparing Apple's to Androids here.

I cannot state just how smooth the seemlessness is with apple mobile products. Yes I'm in deep and fornthe long haul until something else better comes along or better brain washing.

Wow, November!!!

Work hard my friend. Beaver, Wally and Gord or all expecting theirs this Christmas ;) but seriously who doesn't have a family member wanting something Apple his Christmas

Some interesting "modes", I'm really interested to see how it works in the final hardware + OS (with maybe a few .1 revisions to work out the usability/effectiveness)

It's not though, big development shops, dealing with a ton of different touch points, initiatives - there are always these sorts of projects, Google does it, I couldn't believe the problems with <non_disclosure> and the resources being diverted to something with a criticality of an emoji :D

That's an opinion.
As an Android user this is the first iPhone that I really want.
You cannot make a compact device that is all screen if you have a home button.
This is not the entry level iPhone.
I actually have an Essential PH-1 in hand.
I plan to send it back so I can get the iPhone X.
This is a phone to lure high end Android users to the flock.
Make note, the processor is the same as the iPhone 8/Plus.
For all intent and purposes the X is an 8 with a different screen and other features.
The premium is $150 for losing the home button, etc.

People that don't like the X should but the 8/Plus.
I like the 5.8" screen in a package not much larger than the 8.

Yes you are quite correct, but it would still feel like I’m buying old tech as they didn’t include some of the features in iPhone 8, such as OLED and new face recognition camera. Those features should have been included.

Will wait until I have an iPhone X in my hand before I make a decision, as always. I'm expecting an exceptional looking phone and exceptional experience for $1K+. Some of the poor reaction that goes on here at the launch of a new Apple product never ceases to amaze.
