When I woke up this morning and came to my computer to see what was announced I came here first to MR and read this comment thread to get first impressions from others (not there).
Thanks for setting my expectations so low.
I really enjoyed the presentation so much more having had my expectations lowered, thought X was awesome (I'm getting one!), and I think it was their best September event and products yet.

The difference is that what a person sees as "he looks just like you" is not the same as what a computer sees. Phil noted that the odds of it working are 1 in 1,000,000. That'll only get better with time.

I imagine it will work just fine with sunglasses, since they'll pass through the glass. If it works with regular glasses (and they said it does) I'll be very surprised if it doesn't also work with sunglasses.

Fingerprint was "marketed" originally by scientists to the public as unique cannot be duplicated. Science featured on tedTalks informed us otherwise that it's NOt so unique when 6 billion people on this planet.

Now with 8 billion people, I already know someone 2yrs younger in our youth that looked very similar to me - most likely not now. Still amazing how each face is unique with this many people on Earth isn't it?

That's absolutely true. I noticed those borders all around the phone when the images of the screen leaked out of China. I hoped it would be a black tape that was protecting the screen and would be removed at launch. It's so far from a full screen phone. Borders all around, while Samsung's screen actually wraps around the edge, and then the compromise they had to make at the top with all the sensors embedded in the notch. Jobs never would have approved and I don't believe Sir Jonny Ive approves either. I've been an Apple fan since 1979 and still am, but Tim Cook isn't leading this company anywhere revolutionary and they need some new blood at the top with Steve's vision.

I know the whole "Steve Jobs would have never..." is a common joke around here, but I think this is one instance where I agree with you and the sentiment. Aesthetically speaking, Jobs would have never released this phone with that ugly top bar. Not a chance. I bet it goes away in future versions...

That's an opinion.
As an Android user this is the first iPhone that I really want.
You cannot make a compact device that is all screen if you have a home button.
This is not the entry level iPhone.
I actually have an Essential PH-1 in hand.
I plan to send it back so I can get the iPhone X.
This is a phone to lure high end Android users to the flock.
Make note, the processor is the same as the iPhone 8/Plus.
For all intent and purposes the X is an 8 with a different screen and other features.
The premium is $150 for losing the home button, etc.

People that don't like the X should but the 8/Plus.
I like the 5.8" screen in a package not much larger than the 8.

Well in that case then, they should have included all the new technologies in iPhone 8, to accommodate their loyal iPhone customers. Creating a Product with better features, with its usebility mimicking as product that sells less than your product, makes no sense. Their number one priority should be to keep the market they have at the moment by giving its loyal customers the best of their products. Buying the 8 shouldn’t feel like they are buying a “less developed product”. There is another side to this: most of Apple loyal users do so because the find it difficult to use android. Do you not think that by mimicking Android, Blackberry ECt... Apple could portencially unknowingly familiarize it’s loyal customers with Android/Blackberry. Do you not think they could loose their customers in that way? I’m sure Android is better at being Android than Apple could ever be.

Yeah, that notch would be as annoying as a big strand of hair caught on the projector lens during a cineplex movie.

If they still couldn't get the Touch ID to work under the glass yet, why not just wait? Now we know why they gave us the animated Emoji's based on our faces--to sell the notch and their half baked Face ID.

Guess they have the research data that show millions will buy anything they offer at whatever price.

Yeah, the research data is called Android. Apple isn't there yet, but each version of their iOS becomes clumsier and clumsier with more and more options and menus 3 or 4 taps deep, etc. Theor design choices began lacking when they mixed the glass and aluminum on the 5 and has just gotten worse since then. I don't think they care as much any longer. As you say, they've flooded the market and now they know people will buy whatever they release.

In my case it's more than worth it since I've not spent in an iPhone for many years. In getting the 256g X.

But my point was, modern software requires a lot of computing power, because even what may seem a simple messaging app from the surface it's actually doing much more than just processing text. It needs to handle a myriad of services it's integrated with in the background, all while running the ever growing iOS: the cameras, the sensors, the high definition screen, web cloud, third party apps, and so on. even emojis require some processing capabilities. All this is running at the same time, and each year new features are added and technoly is improved.

That is why we need more power every year because technology advances which requires more and more power. If you were to put the A11 processor in the iPhone 3G, it would make no sense and that would be unnecessary, but that's not the case of modern devices.

Just don't download the new iOS every year. Maybe do it for a year or two after you buy your phone but then stop. They want your phone to not be able to handle it so you will buy a new one.

That's NOT Edge to Edge. It's just another Bezel to Bezel display. Even Samsung managed to take the display all the way to the sides on the Galaxy S8.

I haven't read all 54 pages of this thread, but I am glad to see at least one comment on this. Ive said: "For more than a decade, our intention has been to create an iPhone that is all display. The iPhone X is the realization of that vision..." This is clearly not the case as there is a black border around the display. Am I missing something or is Ive's statement simply not true?

The rounded edges are the only thing that's a joke about this phone. When are they going to realize that flat edges=better grip?
[doublepost=1505260109][/doublepost]

Just use a passcode.

I think you've got half the point. Smoother edges means more drops equaling more AppleCare+ remittances or out of warranty repair ro replacements ;) more money in!

Apple knows what their doing.

Funny how this phone more resembles the IP4 vs he original IPhone.

The UI certainly doesn't claim that it ensures anything, just reduces the risk. The problem there is that the S8 looks to only have a single camera, which means no good ability to 3D map features. Machine learning can help address some of that gap, but you do really want as much data about what is being presented as a face to you as possible.

The reality is that something like Intel's RealSense 3D camera along with Windows Hello already does a better job than the S8 when it comes to facial detection and avoiding security risks inherent to facial recognition. A lot of that built on top of the Kinect camera work that Microsoft did.

To me, the impressive part is that Apple managed to ship a miniaturized depth-sensing dual-camera setup of this quality. Based on what I've seen in the industry over the last decade of trying to get motion capture and depth sensing working through cheap cameras, there's pretty much no way the S8's facial recognition will keep up with what Apple just announced. Especially considering Samsung burned their sensor space to make room for the iris sensor instead, and they themselves rank their facial recognition below their iris scanner and fingerprint scanner, recommending it only for convenience. And even their iris scanner can be defeated with a photo and a contact lens. I don't think I can understate how important the depth information is for being able to shut down the easy attacks on this sort of security.

That said, I do think Apple should provide more details on their facial recognition work in their security documents for the more paranoid of us. At least on paper this is reaching the bar it has to reach in order to make this fly, but there's still some uncertainty. Especially with how the secure enclave / etc interact with it.
The wall of text you typed was for nothing because the S8 has a fingerprint reader.

This is the time to buy huge Apple stock and just let the increase, potential stock split and rise, and dividends pay for the iPhone X you'd want. Seriously.

AAPL is currently around $160/share.

So you could buy 10 shares ($1600) and hope that the share price increases by $100/share by October 27 to make your $1000 profit to pay for your iPhone X. Or buy 100 shares ($16000) and hope that the price increases by $10, or buy 1000 shares ($160,000) and hope the price increases by $1 by October 27. And don't forget the commissions and short term capital gains taxes you'll need to pay on that profit.

Which one of these scenarios sound the most realistic to you? And wouldn't you think that someone willing to invest $160k to make a quick $1000 would have enough cash to just buy a new iPhone X outright?

So the shortage was indeed true and not made up. Urgh can't wait almost two months. I'm fed up of using this old iPod, don't want to wait that long.

I wonder if face id is safe for the eyes? I mean, when activated this invisible dot mesh is constantly working to keep the phone unlocked.

Not that in some years people see either lots of dots or have lots of blind spots.

Was this technique ever used on human eyes for hours of use time. Many people spend hours a day in front of their phones nowadays.

It's IR (non-visible) wavelengths, similar to the technology used in Microsoft Kinect devices. It's perfectly safe.

Apparently there seems to be an epidemic when it comes to reading. You can see "your passcode is required to ENABLE Face ID". The phone just booted up. It's a demo setup fail not a face id fail.

Finally, someone said it. Ppl just hoping it would fail, smdh.

Pssst: Samsung had facial recognition with Galaxy S7! S8 had a lot more with Edge to Edge display.

LG features near bezel-less display the V30 even goes one better but seriously we're comparing Apple's to Androids here.

I cannot state just how smooth the seemlessness is with apple mobile products. Yes I'm in deep and fornthe long haul until something else better comes along or better brain washing.

Work hard my friend. Beaver, Wally and Gord or all expecting theirs this Christmas ;) but seriously who doesn't have a family member wanting something Apple his Christmas

Galaxy s7 and s8 have iris scanners, not facial recognition. It could also be fooled by a picture

Is that falser than the "brand new design" for the iPhone 8 that they claimed in the keynote?

Face ID did FAIL .

It said "Your passcode is required in order to enable FaceID". That's a different error message, the same one you get when TouchID fails.

Stop denying that it didn't FAIL because it did.

Odds that an eventual jailbreak let's you integrate the notch into the sides with an always black background?

Samsung s8/note8 does have facial recognition. Most people set it up wrong which allows a easy photo to hack it. If you set it up and turn off faster recognition, it's more secure. Iris scanner takes a lot of work to get fooled so that's the least of any worries and it's actually less prone to getting fooled than most technologies out there.

At one point you do have to enter a passcode or swipe to do something...., Why should FaceID must be used everywhere ?

Newflash it's not the latest and greatest. It's,all tech that has been used in other phones for many years.

Apple just charge so much for it because they drip feed their customers.

It's the latest and greatest from Apple certainly.

I think everyone is aware that OLED's and induction charging has been used in other smartphones. This is the latest and greatest for Apple.

As far as you saying "it's all tech that has been used" - Who else has Face-ID? Samsung? I don't know for certain, but I did hear a rumour that the Samsung "face" authentication was beaten within a few minutes by a journalist with a photograph in his hand. That kind of garbage won't work on Face-ID on the iPhone I don't think. So who is really first to bring you face recognition security on a smartphone? I'd say Apple is the real deal.

I won't dissect every feature, but if you consider the example of Face-ID, you will know my argument.

I think you are right about the feeling of "drip feed" - but usually it's worth the wait with Apple. Glad to see induction charging and I agree that most people wish we had it sooner.

Essential Life enhancing???? Oxymoron much?

I forget what an oxymoron is. Been a long time since I've had anyone critique my grammar. For sure you are right though about my poor grammar. :)
[doublepost=1505269813][/doublepost]
The latest and greatest? So lets see what new technology was on show today...

Smartwatches with cellular connectivity - That would be a no.

Bezel less smartphone designs - Nope

OLED displays - Again, no.

Wireless charging - Starting to notice a pattern emerging..

4k Streaming - About year after the competition.

Animated emojis - that was new.

What other smartwatch has cell data? I'm sure you are right, but is it taking the world by storm?

Bezel less what? Is that even an innovation of any sort? lol. Who cares.

OLED - Samsung had it first, but it's good that Apple has it too now probably. They are playing catch up you might say, but I wouldn't say that. I'd say they have the latest and greatest. What's better?

Wireless charging - Apple is late to the party - glad they have it now :)

4K - yeah, but last year did you have a 4K TV? I got a giant LG OLED TV last November capable of 4K of course. But what's all the fuss about that? Netflix 4K shows are like a handful of shows. It's just becoming mainstream now. If you download torrents in 4K what hoops do you run through to play it on your 4K TV? Worthwhile? I realized it's a waste of time. I'm waiting for 4K to bite me in the axx - it's not worth chasing after it. I shoot 4K video on my DJI Drone, but I don't watch it yet on my big LG OLED yet. 4K is great - but not worth chasing after it - let it come to you. Now you have it with Apple - what a relief.

Animojis - A novelty. Could have fun making avatar videos with moving lips. Whatever.
[doublepost=1505270057][/doublepost]
or you could just wipe your finger first.

Hard to do if it's wet. You wipe and try about 3 times and if your lucky you get back in. Otherwise it's back to typing in a password.

10th anniversary

What makes this device special? Next year phones will have the same feature as this device and probably more.

Does this mean iPhones will now start at $1000? Or will they eliminate the 8 next year and bring the X price down to what the 8 is now?

Will they have multiple tiers like this year, and this new iPhone X will be the flagship going forward? With a different name than X since it’s pronounced 10.

Apple has left me thoroughly confused.
