As things stand right now, I do see some problem for smaller US publishers, though. They could fear the ire of Apple outside the EU. It would be a nasty move by Apple, but they could make life really difficult for publishers who still need to be in Apple's App Store to reach customers outside the EU. Large corporations of the caliber like Google, Meta and Microsoft on the other hand can probably deal with this situation.
That if anything tells the dominant influence apple have that they can hypothetically do that kind of damage.

Hopefully such an action must be illegal in the U.S. right?

The more I think about it, the more I realize how ridiculous this statement is.

Apple allows downloading of apps from websites, in the EU.

You mean Apple allows computers to do what every computer in the world since the early 90s, literally every single internet connected one, has always done to install almost every single piece of software?

I can go to a developer's website and click a download link and install for *every* *single* *platform* except iOS. Apple could make it work if they wanted to. Their obstinance at this point is astounding.

It is not closed. That is not fantastic. Use an Android.

I’ll use whichever phone I want, thanks.

of course.

if side loading was so important, you buy an android
if everything else about the phone is more important, you buy an iPhone.

see how that works?
Side loading is always supported on iOS. It’s just extremely cumbersome and inconvenient.

You know what you do when you want something to change? You engage in a public pressure campaign. Voting with you wallet isn’t the only way to encourage change.

What avenues are open to me if I wish to publicly reflect my desire for iOS not to change?

Such as using a iPhone not from EU, contact your representative and complain how Eu legislation in your opinion is harmful to implement protectionist policies.

Tell Apple to pullout of EU, start a social pressure campaign against EU etc.

So far it seems you are keeping your iOS experience and it’s not changed considering Apple haven’t changed anything for their US customers.

as a U.S. customer you can’t sideload, download from a webpage, use alternate AppStore’s, replace safari with another browser etc etc.

Close to two separate iOS devices, wouldn’t surprise me if the next iPhone will have some kind of unique chip that is only available on EU iPhones that makes it physically impossible to install the Eau specific versions of iOS on non EU phones.

Just how you where forced to purchased an Apple Watch from the U.S. earlier to have access to the heart beat electrode function available.

"It’s just extremely cumbersome and inconvenient." then buy Android for something that isn't cumbersome to side load.

"Public pressure" via boycott or via attacking the brand/public image is fine IMO. That's the rules of the game. Changing the rules of the game however is not.

Or the EU can loosen Apple’s control over iOS users and developers. See how that works? You may not like it, but you do have to live with it.
There never was any side loading on iOS. When you buy a phone or tablet you probably have certain requirements it must meet. Some of them are lower priority and some are deal breakers. If it’s a deal breaker you don’t buy it right? But you then buy it and cry wolf demanding “fairness”.

Yup and side-loading is a lower priority for me than other things. However if government wants to step in and force Apple to make some changes I want to see, I’m all for it.

Side note:

If you really want to find a law that specifically targets one country's companies, just for being from and based in that country...

👉 look no further than the U.S. of A.

Notwithstanding that the E.U. often seems more like a puppet to the U.S. in the very grand scheme of geopolitical things, that is how one targets a specific country's companies. Make it a matter national security. Especially when there's ample precedence of U.S. three-letter agencies gathering intelligence and wiretapping European targets.
Nice deflection there. This had nothing to do with “dominance”, “market share”, “anti trust”.
