I will be curious to see how reviewer stack this up against Sennhiser HD 6XX.

Those were excellent over ear headphones for only I believe $250

597,25 Euro here in Europe.... this would be 723 USD for you in the USA.
I would love to pay the 549 USD which would be just 452,81 EUR at the moment 😂
Your price includes VAT, in the US it’s the price before state sales tax

Shades of...?

£549 UK price - the case is included - as is USB-C to lightning cable. £49 for AppleCare+

So. a shade under £600 for them with extended warranty. Granted they look great but I can't help think you'll end up being a target for thieves because these are going to be highly marketed and visible their worth will be very obvious to those who aren't audiophiles.

I'd bet people with £600 Sennheiser/Bose headphones wont be as much a target.

These aren't for audiophiles. Audiophiles don't listen to music over bluetooth.

These are for rich, white men looking for a status symbol.
I’d be curious to know what Apple is comparing them to. Is it a case of Apple comparing them to high-end audiophile cans that are more expensive while everyone else will compare them to Sony or Bose cans that are cheaper? Will there be reviews today? Nobody of sound mind would order these without reviews, or listening in person if they can.

With no option for a wired connection.. who the hell is going to buy a $550 headphone??

Only professionals would buy at that price tag.. and this is clearly not advertised for professionals. This is literally just a big AirPod, hence the “AirPod” title in the name..

Folks here obviously aren’t familiar with the headphone marketplace. These aren’t out of line with other audiophile lineups. Whether or not they can keep pace in their price range is the question that needs to be answered.
I doubt these are for audiophiles though. Where is the 3.5mm jack so I can connect to my tube headphone amplifier? This is for playing compressed Apple Music or Spotify. Does it support streaming uncompressed lossless?

I think they missed the boat on three things.

1) Lightning charging ?!?!?!?!?!?!? Apple, please stop with this stupid lightning and give us USB-C.

2) The case looks like crap for protection. How do I stuff those in my backpack on a plane or otherwise? I don’t think that case will protect them well at all. I can’t be the only one with a stuffed bag and jamming my headphones in?

3) They aren’t compact at all when in the case. Again, I stuff them in my pack and the more compact they fold up, the better. This is an advantage that Bose and Sony always had over Beats imo.

ETA: I would have bought these for sure if they at least were compact. I‘ve been waiting for these and don’t mind the price, but they just look way too big in the case for traveling.

Does anyone think there is a non-zero chance that either the digital crown or the other button can act as a Mute button if pressed?

Not having a mute button on a headset in the current WFH environment is a serious flaw IMO.

Apple today introduced new wireless over-ear headphones called AirPods Max, with key features including high-fidelity audio, Adaptive EQ, Active Noise Cancellation, and spatial audio. The headphones are priced at $549 in the United States and available to order starting today on Apple.com and in the Apple Store app, with shipments beginning December 15.

AirPods Max come in five colors, including space gray, silver, sky blue, green, and pink. Apple says the headphones feature a "breathable knit mesh canopy" that distributes weight to reduce on-head pressure.

More details to follow…

Just seen the weight of these things, 384.8 grams (13.6 ounces). That’s heavy. To put that in perspective both the Sony XM4 and Bose 700 are around 250 grams. Sure the extra weight could be down to the drivers but they won’t make great headphones if tiring to wear.
