Wouldn’t be surprised if iPhones starts at $2000 in the near future 😟 it’s better for other types of jobs to return but not something people buys ever 2-3 years. At least a furniture lasts 15-30+ years if it’s good quality.
We could easily have our phones last longer if we wanted them to. We could easily do 5 years on a device if we are honest with ourselves

I’m not American. But in principle, I think it’s important for countries to manufacture their own products and provide quality jobs.

Else you might get a load of angry people, who vote at elections, angrily.

And you might find out that when international relations become strained, your economy takes a huge hit as you’re so dependent on countries tjrs are now not your friends.

I guess it might mean that many products become a little more expensive.

But maybe we all need to step back and take a break from the orgy of consumerism that we are all in.

Our great grandparents managed ok (just about… although no washing machines etc forced women into spending a lot of time on domestic labour etc which was not cool) with way less stuff than we all have.

Maybe we’ll be ok too.

Yes, we all know you are a Trump fan.
That doesn’t even remotely answer my question but I’ll answer yours.

No I’m not. I despise liars, cheaters and pedos no matter which side they’re on. I don’t make excuses for their despicable behavior just cuz they’re tackling the one issue that matters to me. A person representing a country should have basic morals to say the least and not lawyers settling lawsuits and moving child traffickers to low security prisons in exchange for silence.

I hope that most countries make their own electricity! And food for that matter.

Again, I’m not American so I don’t / can’t talk specifically about things going on there.

I’ll say one thing though.

Unfortunately for me, I’m getting older and I clearly remember seeing on the news in the early to mid 90s when NAFTA was being negotiated, huge protests about losing manufacturing jobs to Mexico & Canada etc both from people in manufacturing towns and ‘liberals’.

But now people don’t want those jobs to come back?

Like every other company, Apple is making promises which will be reneged when the threat horizon is passed: ie: either November 3, 2026 or November 7, 2028
Um, next year's midterm election? I don't think so. The Dems have proven themselves to be totally incompetent thus far in handling Trump 2.0, so I don't see it changing until the next presidential cycle.

Why do you think there will be any more of these “presidential cycles” you speak of?

This is just political theater to gain points and not be on the administration's *$&$ list. Which is sad. They did this same thing last time you know who was in office about the Mac Pro.

People including the current president do not understand how absolutly long it takes to start up fabs and other facilities to produce these here. It will take easily 5-10 year. At which point Apple is probably hoping the current administration (as in the VP not even being the next president) in hopes that whatever administraiton is in place will allow them to do business as usual without having to raise costs greatly which a iPhone produced and sold in the US will absolutly cost consumers a whole heck of a lot more.

I'll believe it when I see it. Until then, it's all for show.

* Foxconn promised the same thing, took taxpayer money, then completely bailed.
* Remember when Apple was going to build their Sapphire glass production facility in the US? That also failed.
* Remember the Mac Pro being US manufactured? It probably the worst Pro model, and extremely expensive.

I could find more if I kept digging.

The macroeconomic facts are that one person can't dictate the international economy. The only way Apple moves manufacturing back to the US is if it's fully automated, and it's not going to create manufacturing jobs in that case.

Are we going to talk about this? Or did Tim & Co leave it out of their announcement?

So Apple bending the knee to an Adjudicated Rapist & Convicted Felon. Things are changing in the US when Apple starts to embrace this person and his MAGA agenda. DEI initiatives will be next once the money is all had by the big players.

We've gotten to the point where hate for one guy is enough to try and poop on the fact that an American company is investing $600b in the US to create a bunch of jobs?
Yep. I voted against Trump all 3 times, but some of these comments are so disheartening and just downright filled with hate. I dislike the man, but not to the point where I am wiling to bite off my nose to spite my face. It's like the meme where the dude is shoving the stick in his own bike spokes as he rides. I can be against a lot of things he does and still be happy when news like this hits.

Marco Arment thinks Tim Cook is an overt Trump supporter. I don’t think so. But k think he’ll do whatever necessary to keep Apple exempt from most tariffs. I think it’s gross but does he have any other choice? He looks like he’d rather be anywhere else.
