Meh. It’s just too much unless one is a real consumer of magazine content. If it’s the entire WSJ with an actual login to the app or all the content in the news app, we’ll then it’s getting somewhere from a pricing standpoint.

Offering it to “family” use, it gets a tad better but still. 5.99-6.99$ is probably a more realistic price point. But that wouldn’t leave 30% for Apple’s take. So here we are.

I still prefer physical copies, thanks. Might be due to ADD, I find reading news on desktop, phone or tablet distracting. I can only follow the story closely if I sit down with physical newspapers/magazine in my hands. When reading on a computing device, it’s too easy to lose focus on what I am reading, and I find myself reading something completely else.

But, that might be just me, I can see one objective reason why is this gonna fail: Apple’s greed. Very few publishers are gonna agree to their huge tax.

I still don’t know how I feel about this. Sure, premium magazines like GQ, Rolling Stone and The New Yorker would cost more to subscribe to each one, but how much would i *actually* use this is hard to guess.

I do like that you can family share for the same price though so maybe I can sucker my parents into doing it for all of us *evil laugh*

What a crappy service. I was expecting to get stuff like Globe and Mail (Canada) or NY Times, not hundreds of doctor's waiting area-tier of magazines.

I don't know if the US invests in their public libraries like Canada does, but in Canada you can get like 90% of these Wired, Fast Company, GQ, etc. types of magazines for free through their apps.

Is this live? The Try now link on apple.com says that I need to upgrade to the newest iOS version.

Though they didn’t mention 12.2 I’m sure that’s what you’ll need. Possibly releasing later today/tomorrow. Running the beta and it doesn’t show there either so gotta wait.

Off-topic but how I wish they made a Books+ service with decent content, unlike Amazon’s offering.

I like the concept of no advertising when reading news articles. Nothing more annoying than to click on an article/video expecting to watch immediately then having to watch the countdown as it plays an ad first. As far as the magazines go, I hope thy offer ones that are not already free - via Zinio app if you have a public library account. I do subscribe to MacLife as it is one of the few not available on Zinio. I always find something of interest in MacLife. i

I just called the WSJ to cancel my direct subscription with them, which is currently running $15/month but was scheduled to go back to their usual price of $35/month starting in April. The customer service rep asked why I was switching and I told him due to today's Apple News+ announcement that includes the WSJ. He seem well prepared for this and listed a bunch of WSJ features that wont be available on the News+ subscription, things like crosswords and Lifestyle stories, none of which I use or read. After finally giving up on that he offered to lower my subscription price to $20/month. I literally laughed out loud for a few seconds into the phone. I asked why would I pay twice as much as News+ to get the same content I need, not to mention a bunch of other magazines I may read on occasion. He finally relented and I could almost feel his head lowering on the phone as he quietly said he would process my cancellation request.
