OK Say I purchased Wonder Woman in 4K, and wanted to stream it in 4K using H.265?

Edit: I did a quick search and it appears it may cut off a third to half of the bandwidth.
In my situation, I am not sure that would be enough to stay under a 1TB cap. Maybe if we monitor our usage. Time will tell. Thanks for the help.
Again, it depends on the file size of that particular movie. I personally encoded 1000 movies and the difference can vary wildly. A movie in h.265 may only be 1/4 smaller. Most are 1/3. Very rarely do I get one that is half the size.

I also buy Hybrid SACD and stream in true CD quality with Qobuz.
True CD quality is not SACD quality. I guess you are using the "CD" layer of the Hybrid SACD, not the SACD layer...big difference. It's just CD quality 16 bit/44.1 kHz. You can rip your Hybrid SACD CD layer in Apple Lossless using iTunes and stream CD quality to any Apple TV from many generations ago.

This version will be making me consider getting a Apple TV

See I bought the last ATV4 with the belief that because Siri works for my iPhone and iPad that Siri will soon work for the ATV4 in New Zealand. Siri now works on my Macs but still no Siri for the ATV4 in New Zealand.

So, what I have found is that a Kodi box from China does work with Siri just as well as the ATV4, and it does all the other things we want/need.

So for 1/5th the price I have now got streaming TV in the other rooms of my home, without the need for Apple.

When it comes to replacing my iPhone SE it will probably be with an Android phone, at least we have Android pay here in NZ with my Bank and everything else work "good enough" that the swap will be fairly painless.

And because my Mac Mini's have fallen off the upgrade treadmill I am looking at throwing Ubuntu onto one of them to have a play.

Apple gear is nice, I like it, and OS X/IOS but the real differences between Apple and other options for me is dwindling to the point where the premium price is simply no longer worth it.

They must have a new way for developers, then.... No way to load a beta the old way without USB-C! Special code to boot from network? I have no clue.... But I don't see any USB-C port info either, unless it's a pure typo.

I don't think it is just a typo. Pictures of the atv 4k also don't show a usb-c port. That doesn't mean it isn't there though. Maybe it is hidden somewhere else. I doubt it though.

The current atv 4 tech specs website https://www.apple.com/apple-tv/specs/ lists the ports and interfaces as:

HDMI 1.43

802.11ac Wi‑Fi with MIMO

10/100BASE-T Ethernet

Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology

IR receiver

USB‑C for service and support

Built‑in power supply

That "USB‑C for service and support" is gone for the atv 4k tech specs website https://www.apple.com/apple-tv-4k/specs/

So how exactly is "service and support" going to happen on the atv 4k?

Via ethernet or hdmi? I doubt that.

Dying to see the ifixit teardown to see if there is some internal port for serviceability. That would be a real pain for developers though.

No new remote! Ugh.

I agree about the remote. It's too slim and small, has a slippery backside and no mute button. Also I hope Apple fixed the UI in how one "types" stuff in. Having the A-Z alphabet in one long row and not be able to scroll continuously in one direction or the other is really stupid. Take forever to enter information and search for stuff.

I've got the bandwidth. I have 150mbps service. More than enough to stream 4K. I am talking about a data cap. Cox in my area limits you to 1TB of data per month. If you go over that, you pay A LOT extra. If I streamed a regular amount of 4k material I would surpass my data cap. I am already at 700gb per month as it is.

To me this will be key-how big is the 4k file. Some HD files (those with iTunes extras) are already 4-6GB. Wouldn't 4k at least double that?

I play the SACDs in my universal player for multichannel.

My Qobuz streaming subscrption is 44.1kHz lossless FLAC. There's a hi res one now, but I think it has almost no multichannel content, and my receiver only goes to 48kHz (and it is only 2.4GHz wireless).

That’s comparing digital to physical. With a digital copy and family share I can have 4 people stream the same movie at the same time in different locations. To get anything close to that I would need 4 physical disks costing 13x4 = 52 dollars. It all depends what your needs are.

Or you can all watch that same movie in the same rom at the same time. You know as a family? ;) :p interesting concept in today's world it seems.

If I'm spending $200 on a streaming box, I'm going to buy the best one available - the NVIDIA Shield.

Seriously, I've been hoping that this would bring me back to the aTV because I miss airplay and the other benefits of the Apple ecosystem. But this device is lacking in comparison to the Shield at the same price point. Sure the Shield has less onboard storage, but it also has two USB 3.0 ports if I want to attach HDDs or flash drives. More importantly, it will direct play anything I throw at it from my Plex Server.

Even if the Shield does more, if I don't use, or need a USB 3 port, or need it to play anything I throw at it, and I'm giving up AirPlay, something I use personally and professionally every day, why on Earth would I buy the Shield instead?

My TV has USB ports if I want to display something from a Flash drive, and it will be easier to access than the streaming box strapped to the back of my wall mounted TV. Plus, my TV has ChromeCast, and from what I understand that will also play anything I throw at it. Both things I rarely do anyway.

So no, this seems like just what the Dr. ordered to go with my 4K TV, particularly since it's powered by Android TV which is absolutely horrible. I can't wait to stop using my TVs "smart" features, and offload them to a more reliable box.

That said, I'm wondering if Apple is going to support 4K AirPlay streaming over iOS and Mac OS 11, or is capable of it should Apple support it under OS 12.

Double or triple. Thats why I'm whining. I would love to buy an Apple TV in 4K, but the all powerful internet providers have the final say. I am not going to pay 30 to 40 dollars a month more to stream 4K.

Thats why they use HEVC(h265) for the 4K files ..

here is a comparison between H264 and H265(HEVC)

You can't seriously believe that. AVSforum membership is over 1.2 million. If just 0.1% of them have Atmos setups, that's already more than 1,000 and I bet you my house that more than 0.1% of AVSforum members have an Atmos setup.

You're wasting your keystrokes. What Apple doesn't have for sale now is a stupid, useless gimmick "that no one needs"- see 4K on :apple:TV before today. There are a ton of threads on here that ridicules 4K in an :apple:TV as late as this week. Of course, now that God, er I mean Apple has formally embraced it in this model, where oh where have all those people gone?

Wait! There they are, now ridiculing desirable features like modern audio codecs Apple left out of this version... and probably filing away the anti-4K rationale for when competitors and TVs have pretty much gone 8K a few years from now.

Loads of 4K TV's without HDR. I have seen some try to drop into HDR emulation mode. Apple annoucement is unclear how non-HDR compatible devices are handled.

Dont stream them , Download them ... you can buy the Nvidia Shield if you want to watch 4K movies with HDR .. it is more open than Apple TV.

Besides HEVC file size are half to 1/3 the H264 size .. so you will not need more Data I think

OK. So we are not forced to download 4K content. So what would be the point if I buy a 4K Apple TV and choose the 1080P format? Does the Apple TV upscale?

What's the point of buying iPhones with cellular band hardware inside NOT compatible with your service provider? What's the point in paying up for advanced hardware in iDevices or Macs but then never really making much use of such features?

In fact, why did Apple roll out new iPhones today when every single app in the App Store runs just fine on the iPhone we already have? And why roll out a new Watch when the iPhone we already have can cover its featuresand every single Watch app available already runs just fine on the Watches already out there. Seems to me, Apple should just stop creating anything new because "what's the point" of building new hardware or features when the existing stuff seems to do the job just fine as is.

In tech, more horsepower is generally desirable for purposes beyond any one new thing. Do you like games? Better hardware will drive better games. Better video hardware will play 1080p or less at its maximum. This hardware might allow you to convert any of your own video to HEVC, saving great space without sacrificing quality.

Future proofing? When your 1080p set conks, there may no longer be 1080p sets to replace it.

Etc.

None of that and more matter to you? This model now existing makes the "4" cheaper to buy so you can save yourself money and get exactly what you want now.

There's no losers here... just more options for those that DO care about jumping on hardware advances.

Yeah, like 2 others have said, don't see the point in buying this if the Nvidia Shield is available at the same price. I guess if you only source your media downloads directly from Apple, the ATV may be more convenient.

For one thing (among others,) it won't be able to run Kodi. I have a media server with all my media ripped onto it (tons of stuff not available to stream, or purchase via Apple.) Kodi is an amazing library manager that's super straightforward to set-up, seamless, and handles everything without a hitch. Plex doesn't really compare IMO for local media. The Shield is the best platform for such usage and has an excellent remote. It can pretty much do everything the ATV can.

I have both Nvidia Shield 500GB and AVT 4. I use Shield as Plex server to transcode local content stored in NAS. I use ATV4 for all of TV watching: Netflix and local streaming.

Shield is powerful but its interface and remote are so 90's. Browsing through contents in Netflix and Plex is painful, old fashion one click at a time. FF and Rew are also painful, same old fashion remote.

Kodi is also so 90's. its interface is not so modern and consistent with TVos. Nothing works right in Kodi, like Android.

I have a $350 universal remote URC 880 (which I thou and rarely use it since I use Siri remote most of the time. Siri remote is light weight and simple. its touch pad is so much better with browsing large contents than old fashion remotes, by a long shot.

If i ever want to type more than two words, I use the remote app. Gives me a normal keyboard.

Where is this an option in the current or beta of tvOS? I saw someone else bring this up as a benefit to the additional storage, and I said storage is only for apps and app related content (as far as I've seen in any developer docs), not for "pre-downloading" iTunes content - and it's not to be confused with pre-loading some of the content stream for buffering (even if this buffering mechanism downloaded the entire movie during the streaming, I've never seen anything in the SDK that alludes to a complete offline download for watching later). You know, as opposed to the very clear option on iOS/macOS to download the content for total offline viewing.

This has always been an option in iTunes. Now they may have removed it for future updates - because it's stupid Apple. But it's always been an option in the past.
