I assume this one supports HEVC encoding. So you will be able to encode your own h.265 movies and stream to it?

Why would an ATV be a better buy then a Roku ?

Because the ATV4K has Courage™ built in. Roku? Not so much courage in there. (but I still love my Roku)

I was hoping for better pricing, but the free upgrade on purchases from 1080 to 4K kinda/sorta makes up for it.

Not upgrading my Apple TVs this year. But the best thing about this announcement was the free upgrade of purchased content to 4k. I’m sure that will make all you ATV holdouts happy.

I don't have a 4K TV set so this ATV update is irrelevant for me. I wished they have other updates under the hood to justify people like me to upgrade.
One thing would be to be able play your media library on a external drive or NAS. Having to turn your Mac on to watch my personal library is infuriating.

New remote with a ring around the menu button. Wonder if it lights up?
Apple’s website says it is compatible with 4th gen and up.

It doesn't directly say it supports HDR10 or Dolby Vision, so I guess I would have to read through the 168 answered questions or buy one to find out lol but thanks. I still say apple should have included the $5 optical port.

***Edit: someone said no HDCP 2.2, so I'm gonna assume it doesn't support the new apple tv

There are apps available on the current hardware that let you play directly from a NAS.
