It doesn't directly say it supports HDR10 or Dolby Vision, so I guess I would have to read through the 168 answered questions or buy one to find out lol but thanks. I still say apple should have included the $5 optical port.

***Edit: someone said no HDCP 2.2, so I'm gonna assume it doesn't support the new apple tv
what tv do you have?

Specs page says it doesn't support HD audio formats like Dolby HD or Dolby Atmos.

This is still a huge issue for me and likely a reason why I'll pass on this, AGAIN. Hopefully 6th gen will include HD audio.

Audio formats:

HE-AAC (V1), AAC (up to 320 Kbps), protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (up to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Apple Lossless, FLAC, AIFF, and WAV; AC-3 (Dolby Digital 5.1) and E-AC-3 (Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound)

Too bad my internet provider just implemented data caps. Unless Apple came up with some clever compression algorithm, or is negotiating a deal with most providers who are jumping on the data cap bandwagon, no 4K streaming for me.

Same pricing for 4K in iTunes is a surprise.

Pretty sure my UHD TV won't work with this in 4K, but I might buy one to check when the TV app is released along with apps from Amazon, ITV, All4 and My5.

Specs still indicate same audio support as 4th gen. It would really be a poor choice to not at least support DD+ with Atmos bitstreaming. No way to do Atmos without bitsteaming to an AVR or soundbar. To move forward on the video front and be stuck with decade old audio doesn't make sense. Ideally I'd like to see passthrough of HD audio codecs as well. We probably won't know until people get their hands on it or they release more details.

Look up H.265 (HEVC)

And those pinched for bandwidth are not forced to ONLY download 4K... just as the 1080P :apple:TV didn't force anyone to download ONLY 1080p. Choose the options that work best for you.

most exciting thing announced today! Definitely jumping on this. I'm really shocked that the HD stuff will automatically be upgraded to 4K/HDR! So excited. There must be a catch. I wonder if this means Vudu/Ultraviolet will automatically update their films as well? And will this go forward? So if an UHD version of The Dark Knight or LOTR or heck even Close Encounters come out will my Digital copies automatically update? This is shocking to me because they certainly didn't automatically upgrade my SD copies to HD so I could the iTunes Extras.

this is the best, most consumer friendly announcement Apple has made in YEARS and people are still whining. Probably the same people who hate 4k and just complaining just to complain.

That was the same price as the Atv 4 (64gb) if I remember correctly.

I only have 1080 or 720 TVs in my house, so I wonder if I should get the 4K tv or the cheaper older version. I was hoping for some unique features mentioned that would make the decision easier.
I would, and make the next TV you get a 4K one. It's not the big things that matter on these things, it's the little ones, like the pixels. Heck, for $70 more, you get a measure of built in longevity vs. the ATV4.

What about the live streaming sports? The examples they showed in the presentation were Warriors games. Has Apple finally figured out how to crack the local blackout rules for streaming?

It wouldn't. My 1 year old Roku does 4K HDR just fine.

Free HD - UHD upgrades, Dolby Vision Support, better designed Apps, etc. You have a 4K HDR fine, no one is forcing you to buy this. This is largely for people who are invested in the iTunes eco system through all those free digital copy codes and just purchased content.

Or people complaining about people complaining...

Wait... did I just do that too? ;)

or people complaining about people complaining who complain...

I don't have a 4K TV set so this ATV update is irrelevant for me. I wished they have other updates under the hood to justify people like me to upgrade.
One thing would be to be able play your media library on a external drive or NAS. Having to turn your Mac on to watch my personal library is infuriating.

It isn't for you. Why do you feel a need to upgrade if you already have an ATV and no 4K TV? I don't understand what you are complaining about.

That's a very curious pricing decision. And still with the multiple storage options (priced just $20 apart?)

They obviously analyze these things before pricing. I wonder why they wouldn't drop the price for the non-4k 2 year old model (that has 3 year old hardware inside).
It's the time tested "Good, Better, Best" philosophy, that Sears and Montgomery Wards used.

Why buy 'good', when I can get 'better' for only $20 more?
Hey honey, I know that 'better' is only $20 more, but for another $20, and I'll take you out to dinner, we can get 'best' and not have to worry!

The video support is fine. The audio support IS something to complain about.

Considering you don't know what the audio support is. No, it's not something that matters to me. I have a nice audio set up that makes everything sound great. So I don't care whether it supports Hi-Res or Dolby Atmos, it'll still sound perfectly fine on my set up.

I'll definitely be getting one of these. I have a 4k TV and the new ATV will complement it nicely. I just wish they had modified the remote a bit.
