I would, and make the next TV you get a 4K one. It's not the big things that matter on these things, it's the little ones, like the pixels. Heck, for $70 more, you get a measure of built in longevity vs. the ATV4.

I think so too. I saw on 9 to 5 Mac that there is actually a new Siri remote as well, looks like a minor tweak.

I want YouTube in 4K HDR on Apple TV
Yes, at the demo area, can you confirm this Macrumors? Only way now is with a separate Google dongle, my TV's Youtube Android OS app does not support HDR, just SDR 4K. Having everything in one box would be awesome.

It has an Apple logo on it?

Apple has spoken and wants followers to buy this one now?

Ecosystem lock-in?

How about some of us are invested in the Apple Ecosystem? All of our Blu-rays that had digital copy codes had iTunes Digital codes. That certainly can't be a reason why some of use would want this.

While I can respect that it's not for everyone, arrogant comments like this irritate the heck out of me. The entire world doesn't think or revolve around YOUR needs and desires.

I have over 500 digital movies and TV shows, that will only work with iTunes and the fact that some of those films will automatically upgrade to 4K/HDR with Dolby Vision for free? As someone who invested heavily in 4K/HDR, hell yes, this is for me. I'm also hoping this means Vudu/Ultraviolet (a service where I have 900 movies) will be forced to follow suit and upgrade their films and lower their pricing as well. And before you ask, I am a blu-ray collector. Not everyone is, but I am, so deal with it.

I'm honestly quite excited about this. 4K content keeping pricing parity with HD and being able to watch movies in my existing library in 4K is awesome.

All I'm curious about now is AirPlay. Can I finally stream the 4K footage I take on my iPhone on my TV through this Apple TV? I'm guessing it'll put a massive strain on the network, but I'm being optimistic :D

I think it's worth being specific here. First, they said there would be price parity between HD and UHD. But, did they say the price would be *current* HD pricing, i.e. $20? I have not seen that explicitly reported and can't watch the keynote right now.

Also, your existing library will not entirely be viewable in 4K. Only eligible films, and I've not seen a list published. Yes, it'll up convert HD to UHD, but your 4k TV already does this.

LOL, I was thinking the same thing. All of a sudden HD movies will be $29 instead of $14.95 and the $10 sales. They'll say see, price parity. :) Honestly, if they can keep it to $19 with the sales, that's better than the $30 price of most UHD Blu-rays and UHD Digital copies now.

It almost certainly won't because Apple won't support VP9 codec.

I don't have a 4K TV set so this ATV update is irrelevant for me. I wished they have other updates under the hood to justify people like me to upgrade.
One thing would be to be able play your media library on a external drive or NAS. Having to turn your Mac on to watch my personal library is infuriating.

You can use Plex to do this

Will the Apple TV 4K support more than two controllers connected at a time?

Beach Buggy is not fun for whichever kid gets stuck with the Siri Remote!

this is the best, most consumer friendly announcement Apple has made in YEARS and people are still whining.
Is it in fact consumer friendly? I buy most of my iTunes movies (those that don't have codes from discs) for $4.99-$6.99 on sale. I am happy to wait for such sales. Do you think these sales will be as frequent, or happen at all, now that you could get a UHD version for the same price?

damn - I thought I read in rumors that it would have two hdmi ports.

My $1800 msrp receiver (obviously a nice one with Trinnov Room Optimizer Technology) can't pass 4K video... and in hate to put a splitter or something in-line ...

Still wont support HD audio codecs is my guess :)
Such as?

It does support FLAC now, BTW.

Here's what it supports as far as audio formats:

HE-AAC (V1), AAC (up to 320 Kbps), protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (up to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Apple Lossless, FLAC, AIFF, and WAV; AC-3 (Dolby Digital 5.1) and E-AC-3 (Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound)

Of course, you can run InFuse or Plex and get a LOT more formats, I think.

Are you kidding me? I've consistently argued for a 4K:apple:TV for years now, taking the beatings by the anti-4K crowd (where are they today by the way?) all along. I was arguing for it long, long before you even joined this site and you've even seen and liked some of my posts on this subject in other threads.

That post was JOKING. Humor (or attempts at it) don't break the rules around here last I heard.

Jokes aside: I'm first in line to buy several of these. At last!

And if the world revolved around my wants, we all could have enjoyed a 4K:apple:TV 4 instead of having to wait so much longer for Apple to finally get around to rolling this out.

Two quesitons

1. When will we get our "free" upgrade to 4k on our existing HD movies?
2. How bad will download and subsequent online backup upload break my ISP bandwidth?

Apple today at Steve Jobs Theater announced a fifth-generation Apple TV with support for both 4K and High Dynamic Range (HDR) video.

The new Apple TV 4K supports HDR in both the HDR10 and Dolby Vision standards.

Apple TV 4K is powered by an Apple A10X chip, which delivers up to two times the CPU performance and up to four times the GPU performance compared to the previous-generation Apple TV.

Apple services chief Eddy Cue said the price of 4K HDR movies on iTunes will be the same price as HD movies, and users will get automatic upgrades of HD titles in their existing iTunes library to 4K HDR versions when they become available for no additional charge.

4K content will also be available from popular services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video on the new Apple TV coming soon.

Apple TV 4K is available with 32GB or 64GB of storage for $179 and $199 respectively. It can be ordered starting September 15, with in-store availability starting September 22.

With support for AirPlay 2, coming later this year, Apple TV can control multiple AirPlay 2-compatible speakers as well as your home theater speakers to create the ultimate home music experience.

The fourth-generation Apple TV did not receive a price cut and remains available for $149.
