Just spoken to someone on the apple store website and she said that in the UK it would be shipped on the 28th and to allow 5-7 business days - dont know how standard post could take that long but going by how bad the delivery service was for my macbook I wouldnt be surprised - may as well just purchase it in store.

And, they are not doing discounts on Snow Leopard - i just went through the employee purchase programme store and its the only thing in the entire store that is not discounted - i know its pretty cheap for a new OS but still.

And, since when did $29 US convert to £25 ?! Thanks Apple!

Don't forget it's the Bank Holiday weekend this weekend too so no post Monday and a backlog Tuesday/Wednesday. I'll be going to the Apple Store instead of ordering online, I reckon.

I was just about to order a macbook pro, do you think if I wait untill friday it will be shipped with the snow leopard OS installed?

thanx

youll get a Snow Leopard drop-in DVD for free if you order on Friday. it will take a week or more to clear out the Macs with Leopard installed from the shipping warehouses.

So now that it is finally coming, could someone clarify the 64bit "issue" for me? I have the first aluminum MacBook 5,1 (not the new Pro model), will Snow Leopard be 64bit or 32bit for me? I have EFI64. I know that no one has the retail version yet, but still..

What time does it go on sale?...

Apple's press release doesn't make it clear what time 10.6 will go on sale. In the past, OS releases went on sale around 6pm. Has anyone read if that is the case w/ 10.6? Or will it go on sale the moment the Apple Stores open for the day? If its the latter I won't bother pre-ordering as I can just pop in at lunch and pick up a copy hassle free. If Apple is going to be doing the "OS Party" thing I'll pre-order b/c I want to stay away from that mosh pit.

From what I've done and tried the 64-bit kernel is restricted to only certain machines, such as the XServe. I've got the last white MacBook with Intel graphics. It has EFI64 but it won't let me boot into the 64-bit kernel with the proper flags that Apple states.

Thank the VAT for that. Apple's take is about the same, despite the higher price tag. That is why politicians love VATs. It's an "invisible" tax as opposed to the regular "sales tax" in the U.S. which shows up as a separate line prior to the grand total cost.

40% VAT?

well, thats good enough for me...I will wait untill friday to place my order then.. :D

So does VAT

What he means is that the US price of $29 does not include sales tax. That's added when you buy.

In the UK, VAT is already on there, and it's not until you get a VAT receipt that you see what it actually cost you pre VAT. It's further compounded by th import tax which you only see if you are the original importer.

I thought it was going to be £29 or something. I'm British, seeing things *cheaper* than you expect is a real shock to the system.

I know, this is completely reasonable. That's shocking in it's self.

Justplaced my order. Total was $25.55 with my corporate discount! FREE Shipping... This is awesome! $25 for an operating system. This is how it should be.

Best part is it says it will be delivered by aug 28th! So for no additional cost I am getting expedited shipping! Very cool.

Snow Leopard: UK Higher Education price

Hi

Does anyone know if there is a Higher Education discount in the UK for Snow Leopard?

Thanks.

Apple Announces August 28th Availability of Snow Leopard

Apple today announced that Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard will go on sale Friday, August 28 at Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers, and that Apple’s online store is now accepting pre-orders.

"Snow Leopard builds on our most successful operating system ever and we're happy to get it to users earlier than expected," said Bertrand Serlet, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. "For just $29, Leopard users get a smooth upgrade to the world’s most advanced operating system and the only system with built in Exchange support."

Snow Leopard is available as an upgrade for users of Mac OS 10.5 Leopard for $29 as a single user license and $49 as a family pack. For users of Mac OS 10.4 Tiger and earlier, the Mac Box Set includes Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iLife ’09 and iWork ’09 for $169 as a single user license and a family pack for $229.

Snow Leopard in store?

If I go to an Apple Store on the 28th to purchase Snow Leopard, will I need to prove that I use Leopard currently in order to get the $29 price? This process is confusing me right now.

In UK going New York next week - buy Snow Leopard there?

There is no reason for me not to do this right?

Saves me £10!

VAT + Import Duty. Usually it's approximately 24% all in.

Which would be $35, or at the current exchange rate, £22.

So you could argue that they are overcharging by £3. But they'll argue that they have to ship it into the UK, pay other transit and handling fees, and so on.

In the bad old days you'd be paying £29, in the usual $=£ scam.
