On the contrary, running a 64-bit application on a 32-bit kernel requires significant overhead on every transition from userland to kernel, and kernel to userland.
Do you have any real data to back it up? I'm not doubting it; I just want to see the real benchmark of an app in four modes:
32 bit app on 32 bit kernel,
32 bit app on 64 bit kernel,
64 bit app on 34 bit kernel,
64 bit app on 64 bit kernel.

Well arstechnica or elsewhere would publish it sooner or later...

I was one of the ones who pre-ordered from Amazon... from the posts here it sounds like Amazon will be shipping on the 28th, right?

I'm guessing that unless the status of my order and the item on Amazon changes if I want it on Friday I either need to order it from Apple or go into an Apple store on Friday.

Yay.

Wasn't lots of the speed benefit due to 64 bit kernel? I don't get it, the Mid 2009 are the newest ones available... why use the 32 bit kernel on there?
And how will I choose between 32 and 64 bit?

I got a Mid-2009 13" MBP-

I've run the 64bit kernel; 32bit applications run slower (noticeably) and there is no speed improvement to 64bit applications that I've seen.

I'm surprised some of you havn't taken the time to figure out what plane these disks are on (although they were probably pressed in the US since cd duplication is easy) and spend from today until friday tracking their locations and progress.

Anyone who was anywhere near the iPhone forums when the iPhone 3G was nearing release knows exactly what i'm talking about.

Good times, good times.

My UTD status changed as well. :) It still said ships in September most of the day. so I'm glad that it finally updated.

MAC OS X10.6 SNOWLEOPARD UTD FULLFIL-INT
Ships: By August 28th

Being in the East Coast of the US, I guess all those geeks in Australia, Japan and Europe will find most of the caveats in the installation of SL before I can get my hand on it. Great :)

But the installer would just quit when it notices that I'm not running Leopard right? ATM my MacBook is indeed running leopard, but my point is that when I mess up the computer (which will happen eventually, it always does) previously I've already had a long clean reinstall process involving 3 disks and 2 OS's, not counting any downloadable updates afterwards, to go through. Now with SL, I must add on another disk and OS to this already convoluted process? This would involve watching 3 Welcome videos, going through the New Account and Migration utilities 3 times, and hours of my time all just to get a clean reinstall?? I've had to go through a complete reinstall with Leopard on this machine alone a good half dozen times in the last 2 years, when 10.9 comes out does this mean that I will have to deal with 6 OS system installs to get a clean reinstall to the latest software? You cant tell me that makes sense.

I'm sure your computer will be out of date when 10.9 comes out.

When did you place your original order? I did mine on 8/22 and it still says September

Either way, I will be installing 10.6 while all you Americans are still waiting :p.
Thank you for beta testing for us

Well I didn't have any problem when I upgraded to Leopard, but there were reports of blue screens caused by old versions of APE, etc. Beware and backup before you install!

Where have you been? The release date is Aug. 28.

haven't been following this very closely. just skimming some of these posts i was under the impression that the 28th is a false date but i think i have it backwards..that the original expectations was for september but now its the 28th

10.6 installer does not require to 'see' the 10.5 disc, it does an OS check prior to install.
For fresh installs with the upgrade discs, you are required to install 10.5 and then insert the 10.6 disc to upgrade it. If you dont have 10.5 then you might aswell just buy the full version of 10.6 aka the box set.
