Are the up-to-date discs usually the same as a retail copy of the OS, or are they machine-specific like the discs that come with a new computer?

the up to date discs are not machine specific. they are the same as the retail 10.6 upgrade discs.

the upgrade disc however may or may not be different in terms of what files are actually stored on the disc, for all we know it could be identical to the full 10.6 version except the fact the upgrade disc does an OS check during install.

If that is the case, I can expect sooner or later the installer being slipstreamed or a hack that fakes the currently installed OS version

so what happens if I have 10A432 installed? Will it require me to install 10.5 over it and then install the upgrade SL? that would suck haha

You mean you actually installed the developer preview on your main drive and didn't partition the drive just to test out SL so you can easily remove it when the retail version arrives?

FINALLY.

My up to date disc is scheduled to ship by August 28. If I get it that day, great. If not, no worries.

Unless they change the installer since the last Developer Seed was released, which is possible if one of these new "mystery" builds are in fact real. No one has yet confirmed what the actual build of the GM release is.

I will say, that I did not burn the image to a DL DVD, nor did I use DiskUtility to Restore the image to another drive. For all I know, I may have "skipped" the Leopard check.

the Developer Seeds are full installs, not upgrades, so they will install whether you've had Leopard, Tiger, Windows, nothing or anything else on already installed on your Mac so there is no way to compare the installer on these seeds to the upgrade version that will be available for $29

So what's the deal for Canadians? apple.ca/store says that it won't be shipping until the 28th, which is kinda lame, considering that the US store is delivering by the 28th.

Should I even bother ordering it online, or just head in to the local Apple store on the 28th? (Though I called a few, and they all seem pretty clueless about whether they'll even have it on the 28th)

So far ... outside the US has been Shipping on the 28th ...

You have until Wed to pre-order, so you could try calling back tomorrow or early Wed.

glad it was finally announced. i wonder if retail stores will be giving out t-shirts?

I'm guessing no :(

If they were making an event out of it, maybe. But it doesn't seem that they are this time around. You just go in and pick it up anytime during the day.

It might be kinda cool to camp out though... You know what, I think I might just do that. Even if... I'm... the only one...

Is anyone else waiting for 10.6.1 and all you main applications updated for snow first? I know this will be my first time waiting for the first update before taking the leap. I figure third party developers will be ready in about one month.

Lastly it safe to say to all you early adopters is to backup, backup, backup before installing Snow.

Woo hoo!

I am so glad this was finally announced I wonder what date it will be released on and and what version it will be, and how many free tshirts come in the box!

we really dont need to see everyones order status, its ships by 28th get over it.

No kidding. 46 pages of "look at my order status"

Who pissed in your cheerios this morning? I didn't realize you were reigning superior on the boards.

I realize ppl are excited, but repeated posting of screenshot order status is pretty much a waste. I wanted to read about the announcement, not see everyones pre-order screen cap.

just checked my UTD order and it changed from sept to aug 28th!
it was sept earlier today...so i guess they just changed it!

I hate to break your little bubble world you live in but honestly I don't think people are spending 20 more for a box that says "family pack" on it and a "license for up to 5 computers". There's no serial key. You can install the "single user" disc on infinitely many computers. EULAs have never been tested in court and it's highly likely that you will not get in any sort of trouble for installing the single user disc on multiple machines unless by trouble you mean getting chewed out by high-horse riding mac users on this site.

I will buy the single user disc and install it on whatever the hell I want, thanks.

Of course you can. I can also drive my car with my knees, but that doesn't make it a good idea. If more and more people use Apple's software against their EULA then they will inevitably move to a key based system to prevent it. They don't have to be so lenient with their OS, and they can always choose a different method to prevent people from doing whatever the hell they want with it. I hate to burst your bubble, but you are being selfish.

no i am serious and i read i have to install every version of OSX, the entire cat family, before i can install this? Can't I just install it over XP?

OK. You go ahead and do that. Only you, though. You are the only one who has to go all the way back to Panther and start over.

Or, you could read a random sampling of almost any post in this thread. Your call.

Dear madog, I completely agree with what you wrote, but you replied to a post in, what, page 37? I guess it's the world record in the number of pages between the original post and the reply

You can't spot a joke? You can't even go back to cheetah on any machine capable of Snow Leopard. We switched to Intel with Tiger.

So do we know if Apple has a nation wide time they plan to open the doors for Snow Leopard? (I remember last time Apple stores closed, then opened later that day for a launch party). From what I can tell its normal hours...so I'm looking into go to 24/7 Apple Store in NYC
