If it says Ships by: Aug. 28 (normal preorders say Delivers on Aug. 28), and in the past, the UTD discs did not arrive on release date ... what logic tells you it will arrive on the 28th?

The logic that my pre-ordered iPhone 3GS also said "Ships by" when in fact the date was the delivery date. Also "Ships by" doesn't preclude it from shipping before the 28th, just by it., so quite possible for UTDs to arrive on Friday. At any rate it's all fun and speculation.

I called Apple Store in Leicester, and the guy said, CATEGORICALLY, that yes, I can walk in THIS FRIDAY, and buy the Snow Leopard DVD for £25. Fact. Call them and ask yourself: (0116) 201 1900

i was on the phone earlier today with a seemingly-knowledgeable apple rep today (about a separate issue, but i inquired about my UTD disk).

she was around for prior OS releases and said that unlike during the period around leopard's launch where they listed different shipping for the reg version vs. the UTD version, there were no notes anywhere (that she saw) about different shipping dates.

she did note that her systems listed my order as "prepared for shipment" (i only see "not yet shipped" on the web), and she said that on only a handful of occasions over 5 years did she see an item take longer than 24h from the point her system said "prepared for shipment."

she said officially there is no guarantee about any ship dates, but things are pointing toward UTD orders arriving at the same time.

this, if true, would illustrate that just because something happened with leopard does not mean it will be the same for snow leopard.

carry on. carry on.

^^ While possible, and I'm sure there are going to be people that get their UTD on Friday, I wouldn't get my hopes up.

The problem here is that Apple is using different terminology for the status of the orders.

Preorders are Delivers on: Aug. 28.

UTD orders are Ships by: Aug. 28.

If they were going to ship the same, wouldn't they be using the same terms?

Sorry, but it doesn't matter what you, me or the ice-cream man think. You're not Apple. Apple has chosen a GM, and has pressed Snow Leopard discs. You will find out what build made it on the 28th or whenever you get your copy, and then you can complain about it.

There is no such thing as a bug-free OS anyway.

And one reason people are allowed to test builds is to report bugs so that Apple (and software developers) can fix/workaround them ahead of public release.

Yep, that is exactly the reason why I will NOT get a SL copy until it hits at least 10.6.4.

My time is too valuable to waste it with bugs. I remember 10.5.0 all to well. And even now, with 10.5.8 some things are total wreck (Spotlight server anyone....?)

i agree with you that some folks may while others may not get their UTDs on friday.

i also agree -- in theory -- that the language difference should really mean something different. however, it could be inattention to detail. the rep i spoke with seemed to indicate this is possible.

to be technically correct, the language is:
"ships: delivers on august 28th"
vs.
"ships: by august 28th"

again, i have no inside information here. i just wanted to share that the rep @ apple said unlike with leopard's launch where different dates were specified, her only information said all orders will deliver by the 28th (no distinction made between UTD vs other order). she double-checked this as i specifically noted the language difference on the web.

Somebody previously mentioned that there is a $15 Amazon promotion on the Family Pack and that they were able to get it for about $3x.xx after this $15 promotional.

Can someone provide more info on this? I've done a search and can't find any information about any kind of promotion or coupon for getting this discount from Amazon.

i... and she said that on only a handful of occasions over 5 years did she see an item take longer than 24h from the point her system said "prepared for shipment."

My order has been holding at "Prepared for Shipment" for a little over 24hrs, and still saying "Ships: By August 28th". While I've frequently seen items shipped from CA (refurb store and parts fulfillment) arrive less than 48 hrs from original order, I somehow don't see this order actually shipping before tomorrow evening. Having disks show up on the 27th would be a treat turned sour for every cry of premature shipment, should problems and bugs arise in the coming days.

But we'll see soon enough. :)

So... dual boot it?.

For the love of god no more speculation on install procedures PLEASE. Everyone's logic makes sense and because of this its anyones guess on how it will be implemented. If you are that on the fence about which version you need just wait until friday and it'll be ALL over the place just like every other time.

My iPod Touch pre-order almost two years ago was also "Delivers by:" and was at my door on that date (at 8 AM, nonetheless). If it says Delivers by, it's going to be there. If it doesn't...well...I suppose it's a toss-up.

My order changed from "Ships: By August 28" to "Prepared for Shipping". This is in the UK, so hoping that this means a delivery by or just around the 28th :)

This is for people in the US or Canada. In other places like the UK or Australia it says Ships By: on all orders.

Edit: I just noticed it was posted on the Mac OS X forum and now it is on the front page.

I am sure we could come up with a few more ways that the install procedure may work
