Apple today announced that its 33rd annual Worldwide Developers Conference is set to take place from Monday, June 6 to Friday, June 10. As with the last several WWDC events, the 2022 Worldwide Developers Conference will be held digitally with no in-person gathering.

Prior to 2020, Apple hosted WWDC at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California, and thousands of developers and Apple employees attended, but in 2020, Apple introduced a free-for-everyone online event that will also be used in 2022.There will be no cost associated with WWDC 2022, with all developers worldwide able to attend the virtual event. Apple plans to provide sessions and labs for developers to allow them to learn about the new features and software updates that will be introduced at the event, plus there will be a traditional Swift Student Challenge.

Apple says that this year's event will feature additional information sessions, more learning labs, more digital lounges to engage with attendees, and more localized content, with the aim of making WWDC22 "a truly global event." Though the event will be digital, Apple also plans to host a special day for developers and students at Apple Park on June 6 to watch the keynote and State of the Union videos together. Space will be limited, and Apple will take applications.

Developer sessions and information will be available on the Apple Developer website or through the dedicated Apple Developer app. Students can submit their Swift Playground to the Swift Student Challenge starting today through April 25, and winners will receive an exclusive WWDC 2022 prize. More information is available on the dedicated website for the challenge.

Apple is expected to hold an online keynote on the first day of WWDC to unveil new software, including iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13, tvOS 16, and watchOS 9. It is also possible we could see new hardware at WWDC, as Apple is working on an updated Apple silicon Mac Pro, a new version of the MacBook Air, and more.

Apple plans to provide developers with additional information in advance of WWDC 2022 through email, the Apple Developer app, and the Apple Developer website.

I find it VERY interesting that the logo/image for WWDC22 does not contain the iconic apple…

Makes me think this is purely software since the focus is on Swift and not all apple (thus the logo change), just my thoughts.

I feel like the pre-recorded keynote just doesn't carry the same passion. At the core of this company are people that are passionate about what they do and when it is edited and polished into these videos, I feel like that doesn't come across the same way.
Fully. Agree. In a live setting, with an actual audience, there is a cyclical energy transfer happening that connects the messenger and the receiver to the point those roles are blurred. Everyone is feeding off each other. With pre-recorded, there is a sterile, disconnectedness that can be off-putting - even on a subconscious level. Whereas live events ushers in a bit of risk and excitement. There are small imperfections that resonate because life is imperfect. We're not robots. Well, most of us.

I've said it a few times around here over the years... One of the decisions that did the most damage to the brand (though likely resulted in way more sales, hence why the decision was made), was the day they killed the in-store queuing for new product launches. I think back to '07 and that almost mythical in-store iPhone launch... Those hours long lines, that energy and buzz, the community, the camaraderie - they were the soul of the company. The moment they removed those aspects, they became just another [at that time] computer company. I know there's no going back. But I do think there could be ways to facilitate that community vibe a bit more than they have of late. Community and camaraderie lost out to convenience and sales - which is too bad. Seems there's never been bigger need for community and camaraderie than today (hyperbole alert). 😜

The gap starts getting filled once you move past the base entry level computer.

The 16GB 8/8 M1 Mini with 512GB is $1199 with comparable Ethernet.

Based on the cost of MBP upgrades, a theoretical 32GB M1-Pro Mini is $1799 ($400 RAM and $200 Processor)

For only $200 more you can get the M1-Max Studio, which is next to nothing considering how long you would use the M1-Max Studio.

Sure, and I can take the base Mac Studio and upgrade it to match the price of the Mac Pro...

None of this means the gap in the headless desktop Mac market goes away; your choice is either a max spec M1 Mac mini for $1799, or a base M1 Max Mac Studio for $1999...

Pretty huge difference in hardware there, even if the pricing is within a few hundred dollars of each model...!

Boil wanted 10G Ethernet and 1TB.

But I never said that was the BASE Mn Pro-powered Mac mini; I even stated that the SoC, RAM, SSD, & Ethernet were all upgraded from a base model (Mn Pro)...

Based on current prices, Boil's theoretical Studio costs as much as the current base Studio. Considering you probably want to have an external drive anyway, would someone really choose a slower processor just to get a 1TB internal drive on a desktop? A Mini with those same specs does not cost less.

32/512 M1-Max Studio $2000
32/1TB M1-Pro Studio $2000

I agree that a 16GB M1-Pro desktop would be good. I just think Apple thinks the gap between the two is acceptable now. In a year or two who knows but they are probably devoting chip resources to the upcoming MacPro and M2fying the regular Mini and Air.

Argue all you want, Apple needs a Mn Pro-powered Mac mini in the line-up...

The year before they ended that, there was little buzz, community and camaraderie (or even Apple product users) in those lines anymore anyway. Much safer for the product users to end it at that point.

Would prefer the opening keynote to be in person, even it's just a smaller one at Apple Park but everything else I think works better virtually seeing as more people can be involved without the expense of travel and accommodation, not to mention the price just to attend.

I couldn't agree more. Apple needs to bring back in person events already.
I agree, but I think WWDC done virtually is the way to go since it can reach far more developers. Now product update/release events would be cool to have live again, as there was often great enthusiasm from the press and, of course that possible "one more thing"...

Apple has often released hardware at WWDC.

For example, several different generations of Mac Pros were announced at WWDC. The iMac Pro as well as other hardware have also been released at WWDC. That’s why I think there will be a good chance the 2022 Mac Pro will also be announced at WWDC.
This hasn’t been happening more recently. I think the reason is they want to focus on software for the benefit of developers. All of their other events center around hardware, so it does seem a bit selfish to include it in WWDC.

Also, assuming we will see live events in the fall once again, I think showcasing new hardware is always more exciting in front of an audience.

Uh, selfish? You really think developers would not be interested in knowing about the new Mac Pro, featuring a new non-M1-based SoC?

If there’s any place to announce a brand new Apple Silicon SoC generation, it’s WWDC.

P.S. An announcement of a new Mac Pro with M2-based SoC at WWDC in June would give ample time for the early adopters to have spent their money on the M1 Ultra based Mac Studio.

They actually don’t stop… I have myself a hard time being able to follow through all the events, presentation videos, conferences, etc myself.
I still have some WWDC videos from 2021 and before queued you and I’m only watching, sometimes at 1.25x or 1.5x playback speeds.

Can’t imagine then having to be behind all the multiple events every single year.

covid is over. why are they still doing this?

Because they’re not living in the same fantasy world you are. Covid deniers have been saying “Covid is over” since the very beginning. You all are just as wrong now and you were then.

Besides, telecommuting is faster, cheaper, and opens up WWDC to many people who would otherwise not being able to attend. What are you losing by watching sessions online instead of traveling to the Bay Area by airplane, or stage coach, like your ancestors did?

For both Apple and the developers, who this entire event is for, there are way more benefits to the digital events than there are drawbacks.

The one drawback I see is that an online WWDC does not provide an opportunity for developers to get hands-on with new Apple hardware that’s introduced at the event. But that’s a minor point. How much can a developer really glean from a few minutes with a new Mac Pro while a hundred others are waiting on line behind him?

The “traditional” event was part of Apple/Job’s reality distortion field. You put developers in the same room, and tease your shiniest newest bling to get them excited. And it had worked out great, at least until Covid sad hi.

We also need a battery percentage indicator to come back on an iPhone desperately. Getting old and tired of swiping the screen down just to check on the battery indicator. 🔋🪫
Kind getting old and tired of this complaint … it’s been 4yr+ already. You know the work around it’s simple.

Oh wait … is that iPhone Pro causing pain to swipe from top right corner 😜 you can swipe down from bottom middle then top right ;) /s that would be annoying for sure.

But loose out hope I don’t think battery percentage is coming back Not until pill shaped punch hole in iPhone 14 debuts.

They can stream the live event like they always have for the past decade.

These overproduced pre recorded "events" with thousand different presenters feel completely unnecessary. Just give us a press release instead.

It’s the convenience factor I think of having an event that doesn’t require a mass audience streaming to the masses. So is this the ‘new normal’? I think it is, because it doesn’t require to have a need for an audience, when spectators can simply watch from the comfort of their office or home venue, and still completely be in tune to what’s happening.

Agreed.

Also, to mention on wider audience = hearing impaired can watch/read without mistakes or overzealous translators.

Plus the added benefit of less streaming hiccups or bandwidth issues or even worse someone nefarious jumping into the live stream and messing with audio, video or content being viewed live. Think of what happened with Jobs with iPhone 3GS presentation complaining about WiFi and hotspots on a MUCH bigger scale like pron or false advertising interspliced into the video feed. That would look terrible for Apple.

I’m surprised this hasnt’ occured already, and I’ve been salivating this to really occur to a big corporations live streaming even since the movie Hackers!

LMAO in-store queueing would fail on ANY iPhone launch since after iPhone 4S. New is no longer ground breaking in all areas … just a few. I love the iphone and have a few of my favourites over the years, but the rounded edge models are my least favourite ones.

I do understand and get your point. Seems also the goodie bags for new store openings has also been long gone, unless you’re in China or Korea were on Chinese New Year custom packaging or AirPod Pro cases with custom engraving where available.

Pretty lame Cook’s Apple allowed for this overseas but not in the USA, somebody in marketing is forgetting home turf advantages.

I’ve never waited in long lines at any Apple store. I would NOT look forward to smelling the funk and but sweat of the first few 20 people that waited days/weeks before an iphone OG launch = YUCK, not the ‘energy’ I’d look forward to.

I think though the best show of such ‘camaraderie’ you speak of is WWDC a few years ago that was highlighted at the beginning of the presentation. you still have those that think they’re better than others (hair guy in that WWDC announcement or Craig being the swoon of youth - seems a bit creepy really, not rockstar like). I’ve usually seen the ‘championing’ of waiting in line to be that ‘I have money you don’t so I’m better look at me’ vibe as if we’re all in grade school again.

But don’t worry there is still plenty of announcements to come were we ALL are like ..

covid is over. why are they still doing this?
Because they're not stupid. They're one of if not the most valuable company in the world. Covid isn't over, the lockdown is. While they're busy being smart and reigning at the top, selfish randoms that only care about themselves are busy saying things like "Covid is over, why are they still doing this?" Lucky for us, better people are in charge.
