why didn't they save this for wwcd I wonder?
Agree. Seems a weirdly-timed announcement with WWDC just under a month away, Maybe they have a lot to cove at WWDC?

Regardless, unexpected and will prove quite welcome for some. Others will compiling. And so it goes...
I'm interested to see how it performs on varying configurations. And yeah... the last thing any user is asking for right now is yet another subscription. Admittedly, this does seem a pretty decent scenario, all things considered.

Edit: Oops, just seeing this - for those that may have missed the fine print at the end of Apple's PR.

Final Cut Pro is compatible with M1 chip iPad models or later, and Logic Pro will be available on A12 Bionic chip iPad models or later. Final Cut Pro for iPad and Logic Pro for iPad require iPadOS 16.4.

I haven't used Final Cut much but I've been using Logic for 16 years. I can't wrap my head around using Logic on an iPad, especially since I rely heavily on 3rd party audio unit plugins for it. My assumption is that there's no way to install them on iPadOS. I'm curious if it will be like Logic Pro in super basic mode or if will have advanced features of the full Logic Pro desktop software.
Plug ins are supported. Not sure to what extent, but they are available.

subscription only?
New business model: Buy the hardware and then rent the software. That is the future. I don't want to take part of this. I will gladly pay for software updates and new revisions.

Final Cut Pro is $400 up front. Annual upgrades would be $50-$100 on an app with that price. Think of the $49 as an upgrade fee and if you didn't buy Final Cut at the full price upfront, then you're really getting a deal.

I'm on board with this model because it'll allow amateur filmmakers to get in and will keep Apple's pro apps division engaged full time in development.

Small print at the bottom (note 4): Requires compatible third-party Audio Unit Extensions from the App Store

Not sure what that means yet, but it sounds less than promising for my existing Plugin Alliance and other goodies...

The app includes over 100 instruments and effect plug-ins, with plug-in tiles for the most important controls.
I'm not sure about the terminology, but isn't a plug-in per definition an optional install, often from a third party, that's not included in a software package?

This is such a BS argument. “Pay us subscriptions or we can’t survive!” and then as soon as companies start charging subscriptions they announce record profits. The consumer always loses with subscriptions. Always.
Have you looked at Finalcut on the Mac?
It’s pretty clear that the $300 one time purchases isnt paying them enough to maintain it, seeing as it hasn’t been updated (even a small bug fix update) in over six months.
The last three big updates, 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6, have all been several years apart from each other.
It should say a lot that 10.0 came out all the way back in 2011… And it’s almost 2024 and we’re only on 10.6.

I stand by my statement that Both Final Cut Pro and Logic are and will be the greatest apps on iPad and will convert many MacBook owners to iPad Only users.
My primary Logic rig is going to be my M1 Mac mini until there's a new Mac Studio, but I'd been considering replacing my 2016 MBP with an M1 Air, even though I barely use it. Being able to do more on my iPad is a huge boost, and I'd much rather have a capable iPad than an extra laptop I don't really use but need in a few niche scenarios.

Would have been nice if they made this free (or included in the price) for customers who've paid the one-off fee for the desktop version. And then a subscription for new/iPad-only customers...

Including it in the one-off purchase would be nice; however if they did that they might adopt the MS model from Office365:

Subscription for desktop - get tablet versions as well
One off - desktop only

What’s next? Apple Garage, iMovie, Pages in a subscription model? Yeah, courage…

I doubt it. They, along with AppleWorks, help sell Macs. A Mac or iPad buyer, unless they need Office for some reason, gets a full office suite and video/audio tools included in the purchase price.

GB, iM are also gateway drugs to their more powerful versions as some users discover they need more features.

Another way of looking at it is GB and iM are the free light versions.

I don't care about the Sub model. I'll gladly pay $5/month instead of a full $300. This is huge.

At 5$ / month you get 5 years (6 at annual rate) before you hit $300, and save even more on an NPV basis. Apple has been someone unique in including all future updates as part of the initial purchase; if they ever introduced a new version with an upgrade price teh sub becomes even more beneficial.

So no occasional use? Or can you subcribe for just a month? Will it be as easy to cancel an apple thingy subscription as it is for a 3rd party?

I have always found Apple subs easy to cancel, no hoops to jump through like for some subs.

And, for anyone making over $5.00 a month cutting video for others? This just becomes a business expense that happens to be far less than the cost of electricity and water

Exactly. I did some PowerBi work and the monthly sub cost for teh full version, even before tax considerations, was a lot less than the beer and cigar after work; and actually made me money and had less of an health impact.

Ohhhh I'm actually excited it's a subscription model! I've always wanted to use Final Cut Pro, but never wanted to spend all the money and a lot of times my uses come in small random times (maybe need it for a couple weeks, once a year), so I like this a lot, saves me money and lets me use it more.

But generally yea subscription models suck, but for my specific use-case, this is absolutely game-changing
