Honestly subscription models are fine if you can buy them outright as well. Sadly they don't offer that option.

I do hope we'll get XCode for iPad, and I hope it will cost as much as on Mac (nothing).

makes way more sense to announce that at WWDC...

you stay my favorite around these parts 🤞

I can’t act like the producer in me isn’t laughing a bit at the pic of someone using Logic…with AirPods Max…definitely a realistic situation when someone can get headphones with 2x the sound quality for <$200 the price.

but wait………s—t………………those better headphones are wired 😩
I use my iPad Pro with a USB-C hub. Aux in and audio out. I can connect my guitar and midi keyboard and over-ear headphones. Works great. AU plug-ins work with GarageBand but Logic should open my projects and I can continue from there, likely using the same set up I already have.

Apple didn't charge before tho. Applications like these used to be free from Apple but I guess those days are long gone.

I'm not following what you're saying here. Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro have never been free. In fact, Logic Pro 9 was $999. Logic Pro X launched in 2013 for $199 in the Mac App Store.

$5 a month for a pro app is a drop in the bucket. GarageBand and iMovie are still free for hobbyists.

Apple could just decide to scrap the perpetual license or cease support for that software. It might create a ****-storm but they could do it if they wanted. They can revoke the license at any point or drop support and create a newer version. That is the nature of digital software purchases.
They really can. And they have done that, which is one reason I don't really purchase software from them although honestly there hasn't been any software from them in the past many years that I want.

The one that they really did drop the ball on (from my view) was Aperture. Back then, it was between Aperture vs. Lightroom for me and I decided to go with Aperture. It was expensive software too atI think about $300 a pop. That was around the time when digital photography really started taking off and I had been accumulating enough digital photos that I both needed a way to neatly store and organize them and also do some light editing. I chose Aperture thinking that it would be supported for a very, very long time and I didn't mind paying for an upgrade every x number of years to keep compatibility with software and hardware advances.

Well, that didn't pan out. After some years (was it like 5 years?), Apple decided to drop Aperture. My recollection was that Apple decided there was at that point enough third-party software out there that other Mac users can chose from and they no longer needed to create their own version and so Aperture stopped being supported. I kept using it until it no longer worked with whatever latest version of the OS I upgraded to and switched over to the native Photos app.

EDIT: Ok, according to Wikipedia, Aperture first came out in 2005 and final release was in 2014. Thinking back to that period, I think I probably did by Aperture maybe around 2007, maybe? I recall using it to organize my photos that I used for a research project so it probably is around that time. So probably I used Aperture up until 2015 or so so maybe 8 years.

This is such a BS argument. “Pay us subscriptions or we can’t survive!” and then as soon as companies start charging subscriptions they announce record profits. The consumer always loses with subscriptions. Always.
Company profits don’t mean equal distribution across every department with the company. FCP and LP have pretty much been on life support. Probably because nobody or not enough new users are paying the $300

Looks like iPadOS 17 will be iPadOS 15 that wasn’t. Makes you wonder they either had little plans for iPadOS at the time (remember the delayed, cut of iOS features iPadOS releases) or they released “M” iPad Pro way too early (but not to boost sales).

if we get a 14" iPad Pro - that will be it for me... I love the iPad - just needs a touch more screen space.

$50 per year is pretty reasonable for this application. There are journaling/email clients that charge that much or more.
I don’t think anyone’s saying the sub price is too steep. Just there’s no other option. And people who bought FCP on Mac will have little will to pay for a sub.

??? logic pro and final cut pro used to be hundreds of dollars (don't remember exact price)
We will see if moving to a subscription based model means more regular updates for the iPad version of FCP.
When was Final Cut Pro or Logic Pro free? I have used them for a couple of decades now.

I'm sorry, I meant to Apple never offered it in a Subscription-based model before. I was running late to work and wasn't thinking straight. 😔

Before I reply to comments,

WHERE IS THE iOS VERSION?!?!?!?!?! 😡

C’mon Apple, if you’re going to make the iPadOS Version, make an iOS Version also. Movie makers need pro tools on their phones as well, considering the Pro lineup can shoot cinema quality videos.

And I am serious. That’s a huge oversight on Apple’s part. And I’m sure A15 and A16 chip can run FCPX if optimized.

(And for those not happy about A12Z not able to run FCPX, simply put processor is not powerful enough to run lot of rendering action)

why didn't they save this for wwcd I wonder?

Well, I think with all the macOS, iPadOS and iOS announcement plus some hardware, they kind of didn’t want the keynote to go on forever so now the announcement.

Subscription model? Cringe.

Lame that they're going with a subscription model.

Lost me at subscription.

Subscription? Nah.

The fact the $269 iPad 9 or the even cheaper iPad 8 can run full-blown Logic Pro is kind of cool.

It's a strong shame it is subscription based. I wish whoever came up with the subscription model nothing but pain.

SIGH…… 🤦‍♀️

Considering development costs and the fact that most customer don’t want to pay upfront the $300 all at once, this is most affordable way to get new users to use the app.

Another reason: setting example to discourage developers to submit separate new version of existing app as paid upgrade and instead switch to subscription model.

Apple is really discouraging developers to submit the new version of existing app as paid upgrade, and instead update the existing app already in app store and switch to subscription model. This way, App Store isn’t flooded with older version of app and also allows users to get new version of app without doing a new install.

Finally, iPadOS Version is going to rely on Apple servers to run app smoothly, as there is lot of features that require internet. Someone has to pay for the server costs.

Would love to see XCode for iPad (not sure how the simulators would work). If it costs...It would be hard to pay for something we've been using for years for free.

what do you mean there is no other option? for starters, this app didn't even exist on the iPad previously... secondly, there are free alternatives like imovie out there. if logic pro or final cut pro are actually an important part of your workstream then $50 a year is literally nothing to you.

I'm sorry, I meant to Apple never offered it in a Subscription-based model before. I was running late to work and wasn't thinking straight. 😔

Final Cut has never been free. iMovie yes, but Final Cut was expensive professional software

Let's just hope these subscription models are remotely close to the paid non-subscription Mac equivalents. Something tells me it's still gonna be baby software in comparison but we'll cross our fingers and see I guess.

So I can use Logic Pro on a Mac with 32Gb of RAM, Tb's of storage and hundreds of 3rd party plug ins ready to go with one time purchase.. or subscribe to rent Logic Pro on an iPad that has a fraction of the plug ins and less RAM and storage.. Hmmm, sounds like a great deal!

terrifying thought... what if... the OS itself starts becoming subscription (on all devices). just taking the imperative of companies to drive endless growth to its logical, dystopian end 😬
